I believe that's why this guy is older and made himself well known earlier in the evening by getting kicked off the MTU. I think this whole thing was staged to take the heat off the "queen theory" and make it look like just another nut-job wanting to off himself. Keep up the good work boys. You can fool all the people some of the time, some of the people all the time, but you can't fool me! "

Had the reserve not been there, it would have been another case of the "riverkiller" for everyone to jump on. I cannot believe that nobody has jumped on the fact that the current is that swift. Lets do the math: Fire Dept is at 5th/Market Street. He jumps in water at Riverside. They took him out of the river SOUTH of Cass Street Bridge. I would say thats pretty swift current- in fact, so swift that if I was drunk when I FELL in, I could not get myself out before washing downstream an probably dying. "

Keep in mind the informants are often druggies themselves, so often the information they receive isnt always accurate. A pound of cocaine, often turns out in reality to be a gram of weed. (not hardly news worthy). In case you have been living under a rock for the last 10 years, the chief of police loves having his picture in the paper- he isn't going to lose the chance, if something big happens. Dont worry, they are not hiding anything from you. Its all public record. "

" enjoylife, they seem to have forgotten Gordon Stumlin too, he was in his 30s when he died at the beginning of these happenings. He was very intraverted, didn't go downtown ever, he had mental issues. (I knew him from high school) It's really sad that when people speak of these drownings, he's never on the list, virtually forgotton, and that is wrong. Obviously not every case is going to have the same cause and effect, just because we see one guy jump in the river, we can't point our finger on that one fact and say "ah ha" that's what it is. That curb on the river front has to be made taller, a rat maze above isn't going to help. "

Like Joseph Smith a couple of years ago (the police cadet saw him jump in), yet he was never clumped in with the drowning victims. Now this guy. They will both be forgotten. Not only that, but some people even clump in Gordon Stumlin (who doesn't even come close to a, "athletic college student"), but because he drowned, he just gets added to the list. . . now the same with the marine; he clearly does not fit the Queens M.O., but people like the Mountain Dew man, still insist theres a killer. . . . Cracks me up "

" This was old news as Channel 8 had the story at 10PM last night. They reported that a 36 year old intoxicated man was talking to a reserve police officer when he decided to run from him and jumped into the river. He was pulled from the river by the fire dept. rescue boat. (Ten firefighters were on the scene and one was treated and released for back pain.) The intoxicated man was then taken to the hospital on a 72 hour hold. I guess some people consider 36 young, but the readers here drew the conclusion that it was another college student (or 20 something) in the river. "

No, the Trib should not report every little detail, but don't start the article with "man was found in the Mississippi River on Sunday morning, but this time help came in time to save him"...This implies he was in the water when rescuers came. He in fact jumped in because the cops were after him. That is very misleading, and as someone very close to one of the young men in the river years ago, we had no details about when or where he entered the river, just that he was intoxicated. He had not even been dowtown beforehand. So when articles like these come out, it just hits the wrong notes with me. "

That's what the bloggers on the website are for :) No matter what happen it's not up to the Tribune to play judge and jury. "

" The difference between drunk kids/adults today and those from 10+ years ago is the fact that most of them now drink alcohol and also consume high energy drinks at the same time. So, instead of passing out or falling asleep, kids/adults today are completely drunk and still very much awake, thus the belligerent drunks that fight with the police, fall into the river or off of bridges and bluffs. It's a very scary thought considering how popular these drinks have become. There's no doubt in my mind that they are a contributing factor to the amount of alcohol related deaths in the area. "

" I think that this is a completely different case, as was the one during Octoberfest where the man jumped off the bridge. It seems they conveiniently left out the details that would explain that these cases are different so they can be grouped with the others. Why not just report that he jumped in when the police were chasing him and held a life preserver the entire time??? That wouldn't be as exciting would it!? "

" I strongly believe there is something going wrong in the LaCrosse community but I doubt if it's serial killing.
Just look at all the people whom have drowned in the Mississippi in the past few years.
They were all alcohol related in some way.
I don't believe that a person can get so drunk that they would just walk right into a river. The water alone would be cold enough to wake themselves up.
There needs to be a law where when you go
to a bar, the bartender should be able to tell when enough is enough.
Don't serve them if they can't focus or walk anymore...Let need to save lives not kill them. "

The police were called and as soon as the young man saw the police he ran and jumped into the river. Within a few minutes a life perserver was thrown to him, he held onto it the whole time, but refuse to come back to shore. By the time the Dive Rescue and La Crosse Fire Depts got there with their boats he was South of the Cass street bridge. He was then grabbed and pulled aboard one of the boats and then taken into custody. He was then sent to the hospital on a 72hr hold. "
