I’m just a yokel from Trempealeau County. I guess when some salesman comes into my community telling me I have to “by law” allow them to put a 500-foot electrical generating plant 1,000 feet from my neighbor’s home — well, I don’t take that at face value. I investigate what the law says and what today’s wind turbines are all about. I am appalled to find people all over the world led down a rosy path with half-truths and fraudulent claims.

County government has the right and duty to investigate the reality of wind turbine facilities and to write a wind energy ordinance that protects the health and safety of its citizens.
Wind-generating facilities that have gone on line in 2007 have valid complaints of gross sound levels, affecting health, from people who live a half-mile and more away. Look at Wendy Todd in Maine, Dr. Stull in Pennsylvania, Jane Davis in the U.K. and Daniel d’Entre-mont in Nova Scotia. Acoustics experts and physicians — G.P. van den berg, Manwell, Pierpont, Frey, Hadden, Harry, Alves-Pereira and others advise caution, and many ask for 1.5 mile setbacks from residences.

You have to be very naive to believe a 400 to 500 foot, 270-ton to 330-ton piece of machinery would not make noise and negatively affect your family and community. Yes, many of us in Trempealeau County want to protect our health and safety — if you’re as smart as I think you are, wouldn’t you too?
