Countywide effort to reduce alcohol-related injuries begins

.
A new coalition is being launched to better coordinate area efforts to reduce alcohol-related injuries and deaths in La Crosse County.

The coalition, which meets for the first time Thursday, will work to develop a long-term plan that combats the number of alcohol-related injuries among people ages 12 to 24.
The public is encouraged to attend Thursday’s session — which primarily will be an introduction to the coalition’s goals — plus monthly meetings planned through June 2008, said Pat Ruda, executive director of the Coulee Council on Addictions.

“I think we need the community involvement, because none of these things can be solved by just one group or one small representation,” Ruda said.

The coalition grew out of a $50,000 planning grant the

La Crosse Medical Health Science Consortium, working in tandem with the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Injury Research Center, received in July from the college’s Healthier Wisconsin Partnership Program, Ruda said.

The grant project, “Changing the Culture of Risky Drinking Behavior,” has three other main tasks.

The Injury Research Center, aided by the project team, will create a “burden of injury” report that includes data on what alcohol-related injuries cost communities through services such as ambulance, police and counseling.

“We need to know what the problem is before we can solve it,” said Catherine Kolkmeier, director of the Health Science Consortium. “We need to have some hard numbers to look at.”

Another report will list area assets — programs and similar resources — for at-risk alcohol use and abuse, said Steve Hargarten, director of the Injury Research Center and professor and chairman of the Medical College’s Department of Emergency Medicine.

Compiling this list will help the group identify what’s available in the community and what needs to be addressed, Hargarten said.

Information from both reports, along with community input from the meetings, will be part of forming a strategic plan.

Once that plan is ready, another grant will be applied for in the spring to put the plan into action.

The hope is this strategic plan could become a model for other counties, Kolkmeier said.

Thursday’s meeting will help outline the scope and nature of the project, Hargarten said, and how it complements other community efforts to reduce alcohol-related injuries.

" Ollie right on! This city was founded on breweries, bars, entertainment and good times! COMPLAIN ALL YOU WANT about Oktoberfest and drunken people having fun but Madison and Milwaukee would be HAPPY to only have the same number of arrests on any weekend! They get more trouble on Halloween x 10 than we get in all 2 weeks of out Oktoberfest! OUR so-called alcohol problem has been way overblown! "

" Big spender hit it on the nose. Fetal Alcohol Synadrome is a huge problem, in the US. This town is loaded with people who are victims of FAS. Please read up on the subject. There are over 400,000 known cases each year, how many unknown? It is costing this country billions. Alcohol mames in many ways, not just drunk driving! "

" If anything I hope this group sticks to its mission, not to eliminate drinking in la Crosse because we know that will never happen but people something has changed and if we say that isn't so we are hiding our heads. Years ago when we helped our young people edge their way into drinking by having beer bars for the 18-21 group I think we provided safe places for people to drink- not house parties or cornfields - but yet didn't entice them into drinking all the hard liquor and shots they seem to have to do now. Let's look at some real possible solutions and not fool ourselves. "

" LaCrosse has an obnoxiously biased anti-alcohol Tribune, far too many self serving preaching counselors, two hospitals and a plethora of clinics full of "professional" know it alls, a LARGE hand full of self serving do-gooders and resume padding high society "Board" and "coalition" types, "formerly" drinking crusaders and teetotaler's, Two extremely large Law Enforcement Headquarters, three colleges, and quite a few bars.........a combination that equals exaggeration, opportunity to exploit, and overreaction. If our major media spent their time investigating and crusading against corruption, and reporting hard news stories much much more and more in depth and with regular updates, we wouldn't be spending most of our time dealing with the shell game crisis de-jure like drinking. It wouldn't hurt if more people simply minded their own business too. "

" What a joke! City already had a 'group'? Booze profiteers and area leaders looked the other way as they took control. It was a convoluted mess. I only have two words to say, 'Linda Wissing'. Or like-person who works in the trenches. Then keep the profiteers off their back, and let them do the job that they have learned so well in the trenches each and every day. Although knowing the Steves as well as I do they will use it as always to their future political advantage. For those of you out of the loop? that would be Democrat! Yes, that's right, on a County Board. "

" Where was the referundum to the voters on changing our culture? Who decided for us that we needed these grants or committees or culture changes? Do unelected special interest groups really have this type of power over the taxpayer voters in Lax? Reminds me of the few that tried to change our culture by trying to remove the ten commandments and the word VETERANS from our university's football stadium. This smacks of totalitarianism and I hope the state and federal government looks into these self-appointed do-gooders before they violate OUR RIGHTS! "

" The coalition needs to secure more financing (grants) they'll blow through that $50 GRAND before they solidify what the "problem" is. Better start a new coalition...to secure grants. "

" First of all, ban cell phones while driving so people don't run into those who had a few drinks and who ARE paying attention to the road. Secondly, ban people over seventy years old from driving for same reason stated above. This should help considerably. Thses are only two examples of "alcohol related" when the drinker didn't cause the accident. "

" Alcohol-impaired driving and so forth is well-known, but one problem not commonly thought of regarding alcohol abuse is fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). I saw an MRI of a FAS baby at a U talk given by an organic chemist...that poor baby's brain looked like a ball of rolled-up sausages...quite horrible! No amount of alcohol is safe for any pregnant mother-to-be. For more, see "Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders" http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/fas/ "
