Former Westby banker charged in federal court

.
MADISON — Federal bank embezzlement charges were filed Wednesday against a former Westby, Wis., banker accused of stealing more than $350,000 from the bank.

Dale M. Pedretti, 45, of Westby is accused in U.S. District Court in Madison with stealing the money while working at Fortress Bank in Westby.
According to an internal investigation, Pedretti diverted some bank loan fees for his own use and operated outside prescribed bank lending policies, bank officials said in April 2006.

Pedretti was Fortress senior vice president and chief lending officer until mid-February 2006.

If convicted, Pedretti faces a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison, a $1 million fine and could be forced to repay the total $351,899.75 he is accused of stealing.

The case stems from an investigation by the FBI’s La Crosse Resident Agency and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Grant Johnson.

A plea date for Pedretti is expected to be set in coming days, a court official said.

" I would often see mr big shot flash his money around and act like he was better than everyone else. I never did understand how he got by with selling homes and then having the bank he worked for finance them and also be their loan officer-not quite kosher!! i wish the best for his family "

" I think you can be sure his wife benefited from his crime as well. Should she pay it back, maybe. They'll have to sell all property and will always be reminded of the bad deed as they slowly pay back the $1M. "

" How do you expect someone to pay a $1 mill fine and repay the $356k stolen when you are sitting in prison? Is his wife responsible to help pay? "

" norsbeball, I've never been involve in any criminal activity no made a mistake of this magnitude in my life, and I am sure that most people on this message board have ever been in criminal activities either. For you to defend a criminal is laughable, and your justification that embarrassment is a comparable punishment is ludicrous. White collar crimes are as serious as violent crime. Crimes disrupt and intrude on the very foundation of our society, that is why Mr. Pedretti must be prosecuted. If he is not, than what is to stop the next person from doing this. "

" And how much was his salary a year that he needed to steal like that? What comes around goes around. I love it. Flash your current state of high and mighty behind bars fool. And for those you ripped off..may they show in court for you to face. Instead of Polo...enjoy orange! "

" Come on people! We all know what he did was wrong. We also know that he hurt alot of people on his way up the ladder of success. But just remember we have all made our share of mistakes in life! We need to remember there are innocent people being punished(like his wife and kids)and that alone will be alot for him to deal with added with jail time. He and his family dont need the public bashing him as well. We are better then that as a community and as individuals. Just remember the people that Dale HURT on his way up the ladder are the same people he has seen on his way down. That alone is punishment enough I think! Maybe after all this is done, he and his wife will learn to treat people with respect! We all know they have come up short in that area! "

" $350k? He couldn't have been very bright. Even if you took that out over a 10 year period, you would have to expect someone would eventually notice. "

" This guy hurt a lot of people out here. He was always "MR. BIG SHOT AROUND TOWN". Always flashing his money. He is getting what he deserves and should get more. He used my son to get some of his money. So far they have found 5 loans that he tampered with and they said to expect more. He did a lot of double talking and did everyhting to get his business going. I would like to know what his sister is going to get. They had quite a business going of selling their homes and inflate their price so he could give them the loans through his bank. THROW THE BOOK AT HIM!! "
