Irene Mari Hegland
ETTRICK, Wis. Irene Mari Hegland, 91, of Ettrick died Friday, Nov. 2, 2007, at Marinuka Manor in Galesville, Wis.
She was born Oct. 10, 1916, in Ridgeway, Pleasant Hill Township, Winona County, Minn., to Frank and Margaret (Eden) Morman. On Dec. 5, 1916, she was baptized at St. Patrick’s Church in Ridgeway. Irene attended country school for the first three grades; the family then moved to Hokah, Minn., where she attended St. Peter’s Catholic School, graduating in 1934. She attended Winona (Minn.) State College and taught for seven years in rural Minnesota schools. Irene and six of her college friends maintained “Round Robin” communication until recently.
She married Arland George Hegland on Oct. 16, 1944, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Hokah while Arland was home on leave from the Army. They lived in Hokah until 1961, then bought a farm in Ettrick, which they always considered their little bit of heaven. She had been employed at ETCO in Ettrick. After her retirement, she lived on the farm, where she tended and enjoyed her garden and flowers until age 80 when she moved to the Senior Apartments in Ettrick. Arland preceded her in death on Mother’s Day in 1974.
A loving and gracious mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, auntie and friend, Irene expressed so much love for her children, family and friends. She had a sharp, active mind, a deep love of family and was known for her great memory of her relatives and keeping in touch with family members. She thought kindly of other people always, and was nurturing, caring, supportive, honest and a loyal lady. We are honored to have had her for 91 years. Though she is gone from our sight, her spirit thrives within and around us and will continue to enrich our lives. If ever there was one qualified to wear an angel’s wings, it was Mom. In her memory, follow her example and make the world a kinder place.
Irene was a devout Catholic and member of St. Bridget’s Parish in Ettrick since 1961; prior to that she was a member of St. Peter’s Parish in Hokah. She was a member and past president of the Catholic Women’s Altar Society and P.C.C.W. and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Ruth Ann Paulson
HOLMEN, Wis. Ruth Ann Paulson, 58, of Holmen passed peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2007, at her home after long battle with a rare neurological condition, Multiple System Atrophy.

Ruth Ann graduated from Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School in 1967. On May 3, 1969, she married Charles L. Paulson. Together they raised a family in Holmen until her passing.
Ruth Ann worked for years at Gateway Foods, which later became Fleming Foods, until 2003. After working at Fleming, she started her own landscaping business, allowing her to work with something that she was passionate about: flowers!
Ruth Ann is survived by her husband, Charlie; sons, Jamie Clary of Hendersonville, Tenn., and Terry (Kolette) Paulson of Onalaska, Wis.; daughter, Tracy (Kevin) Jones of Rosemount, Minn.; grandchildren, Sidney, Trevor and Sophia Paulson of Onalaska; sister, Beverly J. Ruth Ann was proceeded in death by her parents; her mother- and father-in-law, Margarat and Oliver Paulson; her brother, Ralph; brothers-in-laws, Larry Paulson and Jimmie Scott; and sister-in-law, Marie Blom.
Ruth Ann was known for her flowers. Over the years she made many floral arrangements and bouquets for other people to use for their celebrations. She went above and beyond in everything that she did. Her greatest joy was doing something that would put a smile on someone else’s face. She was a true servant, known for her many talents and a tremendous work ethic.
The Paulson family would like to give a sincere thanks to the “difference makers” at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center and the hospice staff. A special thanks to Barb Norby, who became a very special friend to Ruth Ann in her last year of life.
One day Ruth Ann looked at her hillside. It was full of sandburs and weeds. Over the course of several summers she rose with the sun to beautify the hillside with gardens of every type: with patios, walking paths, ponds, a bridge and hundreds, if not thousands, of flowers. One day a man drove up the road and pulled his car over to look at the hill. He said to Ruth, “Look at God’s beautiful hillside.” To which she responded, “Yes, but you should have seen the hillside just a few years ago when God had it all to himself!”
