Stadium drive enters ‘fourth quarter’

.
This stage of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse stadium fundraising effort is like the final quarter of a football game, Chancellor Joe Gow said.

“We’re going into the fourth quarter and need to score some more points, but we have a lot of momentum on our side,” Gow said.
The Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex capital campaign has reached $11 million, according to Mike Desmond of the UW-L Foundation, which is raising the money for the project.

That leaves the university $4.6 million short of the $15.6 million needed to build the basic design of the proposed $17.1 million project.

And time is growing short. According to Gow, the $15.6 million in donations must be confirmed by Feb. 1 to issue bids and start construction in late spring 2008 as scheduled.

“So many people are eager to make this a reality, on and off campus,” said Gow. “It is hard to imagine all that energy can’t get this done.”

Desmond said UW-L again will approach some potential major donors in the area who have not yet committed to the project.

La Crosse County and the cities of Onalaska and La Crosse also have been asked to contribute.

Officials in both cities have proposed raising their hotel room tax; the extra revenue — $500,000 over five years from La Crosse, $185,000 in the same period from Onalaska — would be earmarked for the stadium.

Meanwhile, the county’s Executive Committee suggested Wednesday it could kick in $11,600 annually, which is the estimated amount the county reaps annually in sales tax revenue from the state high school track meet held each spring at UW-L.

The fundraising effort is just starting to turn to alumni outside La Crosse and plans to appeal to the general public in La Crosse and Onalaska, primarily through media ads, said Desmond.

They have a separate campaign aimed at veterans and veterans groups, he said.

“We are very optimistic we are going to get there,” Desmond said.

" To tblock, re: "a VERY large number of their visiting guests are in town to watch their son/daughter participate in events that utilize the UWL stadium complex." It's the opposite...most guests are here on business or for tourism...local sports just ain't that big. So, the hotel tax is NOT being paid by stadium users or stadium beneficiaries. Stadium supporters are grasping at straws when they cite one track meet during one little weekend as sufficient economic payoff for the upgrade. Most important, there are more pressing local needs than a UW-L stadium upgrade...private donations are ok, but leave cash-poor taxpayers out of this frivolous project. "

" To Big Spender: Many, if not most, of the local hospitality businesses understand that a VERY large number of their visiting guests are in town to watch their son/daughter participate in events that utilize the UWL stadium complex. (high school or college) And by helping out the development of the stadium, the companies would continue to reap the benefits of sold out rooms. Plus, ask most parents and I bet that many of them wouldn't mind helping out a university develop a well needed upgrade for their son/daughter to participate in!! Nobody is asking you personally do donate the money. We never have 100% approval when capital projects are needed, but understand just bc you don't want to help, doesn't mean it's not needed. It benefits thousands of individuals - students, athletes, and parents - not just ATHLETES! "

Big Spender wrote on Nov 12, 2007 12:41 PM:

" Reply to tblock: the hospitality tax is coming out of the pockets of working-class motel guests who do not benefit from the stadium upgrade--that is ethically wrong. Also, I do donate to worthy causes; do give SaveDarfur.org a visit. BTW, what is wrong with this site today?....it is nearly impossible to type and my msgs are being constantly deleted. "

" To Big Spender: The hospitality industry is the only TAX dollar being used for this project. The foundation is asking for DONATIONS - not asking you to pass a referendum to increase taxes for project funding. Your taxes aren't being increased to pay for this!! There are many projects in the area that are built for the needs of others - La Crosse Center, YMCA, Boys & Girls Club. Many people have never used these projects but donated bc it benefits other community members. Stop being selfish, and help others within your community - you'd be surprised how the favor is returned. Please DONATE! "

" Back at uwlax alum: I say get going on the Alumni fund raiser. You know, the UWL Foundation could not monitor their spending. How too many forget the changing of the gaurds their concerning the 'Alumni Center'. Remember a good part of a Tribune section, Replacing Pat Stephans, was shifted over to Czar of Lacrosse Festivities on UWL dime. For misappropirating given funds that people had given for other reasons. Spending $1.20 when taking in $1.00 once again. How about we clean up a portion of the $228 million of the impending WI Tech College on 17 campuses shortage in funding for just 'one' benefit. Easier to just ignore it? As if some of the Tech/UW Funds do not come from the same trough? Back to you. Those darn facts and history! "

" To tblock, re: "It's unbelievable how many of you complain about this project! Way to show what a supportive COMMUNITY we are. This project will benefit the general student body, the student-athletes, the local businesses, and university." Most locals do not object to the stadium upgrade per se, as far as I can tell, we object to paying for it when there are more important needs left unmet and because working-class taxpayers are already stretched to the max with taxes and expenses. Further, the benefits go to a select few: most of us don't care about UW-L or high school sports. Fix the roads, hire more teachers, feed poor kids, care for sick people...that's what government is supposed to do with our tax money--sports stadiums are for fun and games. "

" IMO...With the ever rising price of fuel, its just a matter of time before the WIAA moves the State Track meet. The majority of schools are on the eastern part of the state. The economics favor a move to front-runner Oshkosh. Overall, UW-L wins by getting their new stadium/facility with the fear of loosing the state track championship. "

" There weren't so many naysayers when they built the La Crosse Center because people wanted a new place to go to watch the wrasslin matchs. "

uwlax alum wrote on Nov 10, 2007 10:24 PM:

" Back at the North Sider: Uh, what do you mean 'get going?' I am simply suggesting UWL spread the word to alumni that they need help raising the money. I think they would be a lot more supportive than you. And by the way, I AM a local taxpayer--on the NORTH SIDE, ironically! ...Only I support my community. "

tblock wrote on Nov 10, 2007 7:25 PM:

" It's unbelievable how many of you complain about this project! Way to show what a supportive COMMUNITY we are. This project will benefit the general student body, the student-athletes, the local businesses, and university. A general student that chooses to partake in intramurals, club sports or has a degree in exercise science will be utilize the complex for contests, classroom teachings, and research. The university will use it to recruit prospective students which in turn bring in more dollars. Local businesses will benefit from parents and spectators who enjoy showing support for their child/school when they go out for dinner, gas up the vehicle, and stay the night. Attending college is not just about books and lectures. It’s about an experience, and what you make out of it. Developing a well-rounded, educated individual who can succeed in society. Support your community, the university, and the students, please DONATE! "

" As far as I know, UW-L has not solicited any donations from its alumni!! Just think of the tens of thousands of graduates of the University... I really don't think the majority of them even know about this issue. "

" Mr. Gow- Why don't you donate the $17k you get in the form of benefits they have opted to name, 'housing allowance' each year? Or are you afraid you will not be able to place cornflakes on the table from your base salalry. "

North Sider wrote on Nov 10, 2007 1:19 PM:

" And for you whiners who won't donate anything, when the University DOES eventually get the nice stadium, I don't want to see ANY of you going to ANY events there. And I HAVE donated money to the cause also. Thank you. "

Anna Banana wrote on Nov 10, 2007 12:31 PM:

" I find it insulting that the area lodging establishments are trying to take credit for the fact that they are going to raise the hospitality taxes on people staying in local hotels and then say hey we are supporting the project with this much money. Baloney - they should be donating money in addition to the hospitality taxes. In our area the hotels are the last ones to dish out any money and now is time that they poney up. After all they reap the biggest benefit of the stadium. "

Krusty wrote on Nov 10, 2007 10:31 AM:

" As a veteran and as a member of the VFW and the American Legion I would like to donate $0 to the stadium project. Has UWL forgotten already how bad it insulted veterans when it insisted on renaming the stadium? I'll make a point of talking to my fellow vets and remind them of how little UWL deserves any form of donation. There is thousands of more deserving causes that I would prefer to donate to...UWL and its stadium is last on the list. Right next to PETA, the neo-nazi's, and the Democratic Party. "

" Yet we are subject to another 'emergency'. When it rains it pours. From all over our town, and from different entities. Who said they are not a learning institution, they have learned from the likes of Kirby and Encyclopedia salesman. Then count, and amazingly we will need parking funds to fix the congested neighborhoods. Oh boy, I cannot wait for the lauded 'Track Weekend' cash flow to hit the coffers? "

" RE The Shining You open YOUR wallet. ZERO is what they get from me, the whole stadium is a joke, being dumped on the taxpayers. They will be back for more. As far as them going to the military and veterans, they simply don't get it. They insulted them and degraded thier accomplishments, now once again they are coming begging. "

The Shining wrote on Nov 10, 2007 6:06 AM:

" Looks like the Stadium Propaganda Machine has got the Tribune firmly on board the fleecewagon as they publish yet another infomercial cheerleading the misappropriation of taxpayer funds. Local leaders and Tribune reporters alike follow an unwritten code that forbids mention of this most taboo of subjects: the effect of a tax on working-class citizens. Gow says "We’re going into the fourth quarter and need to score some more points," well, here's a scoring update: Sports-crazed Spendthrifts 59, Taxpaying Nobodies 0. http://www.amazon.com/Nobodies-Modern-American-Global-Economy/dp/1400062098/ref=sr_1_1/102-5389667-5064157?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1194687766&sr=1-1 "
