Ruth M. Arnoldy
LA CRESCENT, Minn. — Ruth M. Arnoldy, 86, of La Crescent died on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007, at Golden Living Center, La Crescent, from complications after a recent fall.

She was born April 27, 1921, in Buffalo City, Wis., to William and Hattie (Fetting) Lee. She married Erwin A. Arnoldy on Jan. 26, 1943, in Winona, Minn. He preceded her in death April 27, 1990. Ruth was a longtime member of Church of the Crucifixion, La Crescent, and St. Francis of Cabrini Circle.

She enjoyed sewing, embroidering dish towels, knitting dish rags, reading, watching game shows, Wednesday afternoon card games with her lady friends and the annual family get-together at Applefest. When she came to stay in Lewiston (Minn.) at the “Anderson Hotel,” she enjoyed spending Wednesdays with her sister-in-law, Rosie.

Ruth is survived by five children, Larry (Gerlinde) Arnoldy of Heidelberg, Germany, Brenda (Billy) Anderson of Lewiston, and their children Renee Plass, Kathy Hans, Rick Anderson, Val (Jeff) Bartsch, and Lori (Danny) Montgomery, Bruce (Mardelle) Arnoldy of Arcadia, Wis., and their children Chelsea (Ben) Golden, Carmen Arnoldy and Quinn Arnoldy, Barbara (Mark) Weibel of West Salem, Wis., and their children Angela (fiancé’ Brian) Weibel, Megan Weibel and Justine Weibel and Betsy (Mike) O’Flaherty of La Crescent and their children Elyse and Keith O’Flaherty; four great-grandchildren, Briar, Brooklynn and BrehAnna Golden and Joseph Gerard Daley V; 14 stepgreat-grandchildren; two brothers, Dale (Pat) Lee of Brush, Colo., and Brendan (Cleone) Lee of Winona; four sisters-in-law, Elaine Lee of Plainview, Minn., Rosie (William) Saehler of Minnesota City, Minn., Darlene Arnoldy of Arvada, Colo., and Mary Arnoldy of New Ulm, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews, including her special prayer pal, Bridgid Smith.

In addition to her husband, Erwin, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Donald and Bradley; a sister Orvilla; and three brothers, La Vern, Edmund and Allan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at Church of the Crucifixion, La Crescent. Msgr. Donald W. Grubisch will officiate. Burial will be in Crucifixion Catholic Cemetery, La Crescent. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crescent and from 9 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the church. A rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Lorna Mae Halverson

GALESVILLE, Wis. — Lorna Mae Halverson, 92, of Galesville and formerly of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007, at Marinuka Manor, Galesville. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Zion Lutheran Church, Galesville. A private burial will be in Pine Cliff Cemetery, Galesville. Zwickey Funeral Homes-Galesville Chapel, is assisting the family.

Juliene K. Bovee

MCGREGOR, Iowa — Juliene K. Bovee, 63, of McGregor died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007, at Memorial Hospital, Prairie du Chien, Wis. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home, with burial in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, both in McGregor. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

E. Keith Swanson

E. Keith Swanson, 82, of La Crosse passed away at his home Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007. He died looking out over his Black River as eagles soared, the ice thickened and the sun set.

He was born Nov. 22, 1925, in Dunnell, Minn., to Emil and Laura (Peterson) Swanson and graduated from Sherburne High School in Sherburne, Minn. Keith received his bachelor of science degree from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn., and later his master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Minnesota.

Keith served in the U.S. Army during World War II and during the Korean Conflict. On March 25, 1951, he married Joyce M. Holcomb in Fairmont, Minn., and they have been together ever since. Keith subsequently worked as a geologist for Gulf Oil Co. in the western United States and Canada. He then served as a professor of mathematics at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse from 1957 until his retirement in 1990. He then became a farmer in southern Minnesota for these past 17 years.

Keith was a member of English Lutheran Church in La Crosse, skied 99 days last year and enjoyed boating, wind surfing, water skiing and SeaDoo riding, along with motorcycle trips, tennis, the outdoors and extensive travel with his wife, Joyce. He loved teaching his three children, 10 grandchildren and others how to make the most of every day. He finished all his e-mails, even his last one, with “Life is Good!”

In addition to his wife, Joyce, he is survived by three children, Scott Swanson and his wife, Connie Wiggert Swanson of Scottsdale, Ariz., Todd Swanson and his wife, Eileen Gale Swanson of Boise, Idaho, and Jill Swanson Zietlow and her husband, Scott Zietlow of Rochester, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, Lisa, Brian, Christine, Matthew, Isaac and Sam Swanson, and Mark, John, Matt and Luke Zietlow; a sister, Marian Johnson and her husband, Chet of St. Peter, Minn.; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial services will be at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at English Lutheran Church in La Crosse, with Pastor Mark Solyst officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to English Lutheran Church, Minnesota Public Radio, La Crosse Public Library or the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Foundation.

Marguerite A. Ellison

Marguerite A. Ellison, 98, of La Crosse died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007, at St. Joseph Rehabilitation Center inLa Crosse.

She was born Oct. 3, 1909, near Marshfield, Wis., to Henry and Mae Vick.

She is survived by two sons, Keith (Marcella) Ellison of La Crosse and Dennis (Judy) Ellison of Chase, Mich.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and a brother, James (Bess) of Schofield, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son; three brothers; and five sisters.

Marguerite is to be cremated. A memorial service will be held in Michigan at a later date. Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is assisting the family.

Cyrus Baldwin Gaustad

PORT HUENEME, Calif. — Cyrus Baldwin Gaustad, 87, of Port Hueneme died peacefully in his sleep at St. John’s Hospital, Oxnard, Calif., on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007.

Cyrus was born Feb. 24, 1920, in Houston, Minn.

He moved to California in his early 20s, where he met his first wife, Sarah Mary Castiglia. Soon after their marriage, he was drafted into World War II and served in the Army as a radio operator in the 84th Infantry Railsplitter Division.

In 1956, he and his family moved to Ventura County, Calif., where he remained until his death. His hobbies and interests included a passion for making classical guitars, as well as gardening. He also enjoyed woodworking and spending time with family and friends. He was member of Mary Star of the Sea Parish, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Oxnard Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks. Another love of his was ballroom dancing, where he was fortunate enough to meet his second wife, Marjorie Pauline Vacca. Together they were members of the Gold Coast and the 50 Plus dance clubs.

He is survived by his children, Linda Gaustad Mangold (husband Conrad) of Lakewood, Colo., Susan Shrope (husband Arthur) of Oxnard, and Teresa Owen of North Bend, Wash.; and grandchildren, Michael, Mark and Katie Mangold and Matthew, Allison, Christopher and Kevin Shrope.

He is preceded in death by his first and second wives, Sarah Mary Gaustad and Marjorie Pauline Gaustad, respectively.

Services and interment will be private for the family.

Kimberly D. (Lough) Wilhelm

DECORAH, Iowa — Kimberly D. (Lough) Wilhelm, 31, of Decorah and formerly of Waukon, Iowa, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, Minn. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, with burial in Oakland Cemetery, both Waukon. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Martin Funeral Home, Waukon.

Marvin L. Sherburne

MABEL, Minn. — Marvin L. Sherburne, 81, of Mabel died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007, at his home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Mabel United Methodist Church, with burial in Mabel Public Cemetery, both Mabel, with military rites by Mabel American Legion. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Mengis Funeral Home, Mabel, and 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the church.

Ann (Schaefer) Mascari

SPARTA, Wis. — Ann (Schaefer) Mascari, 97, of Sparta and formerly of Milwaukee died Friday, Nov. 30, 2007, at Morrow Memorial Home, Sparta. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Valhalla Memorial Park Chapel, Milwaukee, with burial in Valhalla Memorial Park. Myrtle N. Eide

PIGEON FALLS, Wis. — Myrtle N. Eide, 93, of Pigeon Falls and formerly of Whitehall, Wis., died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007, at Black River Memorial Hospital, Black River Falls, Wis. Services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Upper Pigeon Creek Lutheran Church, rural Hixton, Wis., with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Jensen-Modjeski Funeral Home, Hixton, and 3 p.m. until the time of services Sunday at the church.
