Regents OK tuition increase at UW-L

.
The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents unanimously approved a tuition increase at UW-La Crosse on Friday as part of the school’s Growth, Quality and Access plan. UW-L Chancellor Joe Gow called it a great day for current and future UW-L students.

The increase will fund 500 more students and 95 additional faculty and staff members during the next five years. UW-L officials said the university also will be able to reduce class sizes, add course sections and admit more students who have been turned away.
Gow said Friday was a great day not only for current UW-L students but thousands in the future.

“The regents ensured that we’ll be able to provide an even better academic experience with even more personalized attention to students,” Gow said.

Approval was a “great affirmation of good, old-fashioned teamwork” through the close collaboration throughout the development of the new growth plan among UW-L students and faculty, community leaders, legislators, UW-system officials and now the regents, he said.

The plan will increase tuition by $500 per year for new undergraduate students in the 2008-09 academic year and an additional $500 per year for the 2009-10 academic year.

Regent Thomas P. Shields, who did not initially support the plan, said he thought it was amazing how fast UW-L leaders and members of the La Crosse legislative delegation and community came together to form a modified version of the plan.

Fred Ludwig, president of the UW-L student association, said he was pleased with the large amount of student involvement in the plan’s creation.

Ludwig also did not support the original Growth and Access plan because he said it was “essentially formulated in an administrative vacuum.”

“With Joe coming in and providing a much more transparent and open relationship with students — that was key in gaining support for the plan this time around,” Ludwig said.

Gow said they will continue the “robust discussions” on campus about which areas to best add new faculty and staff.

“We have a great opportunity here and have to be responsible about doing solid planning for the hiring that is to come now,” Gow said.

Meanwhile, UW-Madison’s top academic official said a tuition increase was needed for it to remain competitive.

UW-Madison’s tuition has long been higher than other state schools, but Provost Patrick Farrell said Friday it’s still not high enough.

The school’s $7,188 tuition is the second lowest in the Big 10 Conference, which deprives it of resources needed to compete against top universities, Farrell said. A $2,400 increase would bring the school up to the conference average, he said.

Farrell stopped short of calling for an increase that big but bluntly told the regents higher tuition was needed.

“We are operating at a deliberate handicap,” he said. “This is an area where we think you all could help.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

" Jealous? Yeah, I am back at you. If you have not figured out who I am talking about, it is Kember. Do you have any idea what his secretary started at? An application process that had to accept applicants and testing during three sessions as there were so many. More to the point, Do you know what Regent 'On Too Many Boards' paid his secretary for the last few years in his private sector job. A secretary that had a direct effect on the 'profit' of his Firm and his pocket book. Now there is a term you do not hear very often, 'profit'. Jealous?, my rear end! It goes on from top to bottom. Got a lot more. Talk to me real nice and I will tell you. Hypocrites. "

" Look, I am still wondering why UWL paid for years for a 'Czar of Festivities' easily 6 figures. When you add in pay/benfits/equipment/overhead/staff? There is alot that UWL and the Tribune do not what to talk about. Too bad!!!! There are alot of secrets over there. That is not counting on Stadiums that were supposed to be private donation financed. Get out your checkbooks once more. Oh yeah, they are whacking people who visit our town. Just like they are whacking the students that have not arrived and have no voice whatsoever. Just like alllowing studnets with subpar grades, as there parent has served on influential UWL Boards. There are alot of secrets over there. "

" Legislators smarmy sick pay money was a great embarrassment for them. Although like almost all red face times, wait long enough and it will in fact go away. Kapanke when asked about it stated he would give all funds back. Cannot wait to ak him if this was completed? Onalaska had made promises that on the same lines, had not idea how to fund them, and lied to their taxpayers. Telling them they would now save them, 20% by switching them over to annuities. Never telling taxpayers it will now 'front load' at $1.3 million starting this year, and at todays rates. Holmen Schools has basically the same sick/post health benefit game. Although Holmen along with many others when pressed out of embarrassment will call it something else. All the while the benefit is extinct in the private worker sector. "

" LaCrosse Roofer--audit reveals average UW faculty member had a benefit of $222,000 by accumulating sick leave! Story is hidden on pg B-4 lax trib sat 12/08/07. The tribune editors were right on top of this story when it involved legislators and rightfully so, but this stinks. Just another case of striving to find the truth and SELECTIVELY print it! "

" $7,188 tuition is no bargain for what the students are really getting for their money; it's more efficient (and about as good) to just require public universities to put all their courses on the Internet--just charge a thousand bucks for a degree once all tests have been passed. " Haven't prospective student complaints about the increasing inability to afford college tution (and other costs) been part of the news for at least the last several years? : : : After this increase goes into effect, it will be interesting to see what the numbers admitted actually are, dontcha think? " TO: just the facts- Could you please share your source with me. lacrosseroofer@centruytel.net or send to lacrosse Roofer (phonebook). Wow! If verifiable, it is sickening and smarmy as the Represenative, and Senators covert sick plan. "

" What a surprise! Also in todays trib but conveniantly placed in a remote location, was a story about how the regents approved a new sick leave policy for professors. What we never saw in previous trib coverage was that the average faculty member had accumulated $220,000 in this faulty scheme .Are these the same poor downtrodden faculty members who are paid too little? Come on trib lets hear the story. "

" Apparently UW-M people weren't paying attention! Just have the existing students vote on an increase for everyone else but them. It works! "

North Sider wrote on Dec 8, 2007 9:51 AM:

" They call this news. Along with the Tribune Editorial Board 'they' have been pounding this at us like a stake for quite some time. Shields-"amazing how fast...delegation and community came together." Ludwig-"pleased with the large amount of student", "formulated in an administrative vacuum.” Teamwork? Watered down, and charging students that were not able to vote on the tuition raise. Talk about lack of representation. My Dad told me, in negotiations if you want $20 you ask for $40. He also had another term, 'BS'! This "Teamwork" was a win for nobody except Huebsch who held them somewhat close to the ground with their clamouring once more for more funds. "Remain competitive", 2/3rds are turned away? "
