“The commission is taking this step as another conservation effort to postpone the eventual need for new area codes in the 715 and 920 areas,” Chairman Dan Ebert said in a press release.
Typically, telecommunications providers are assigned phone numbers in blocks of 10,000, and many of those numbers go unused. To help extend the life of the 715 and 920 area codes, the commission is requiring the providers to pool their unused numbers. These unused numbers then will be reassigned as needed in blocks of 1,000.
