We must do something about our dependency on foreign oil. It is the very root of our problem in the Middle East. It gives those countries the opportunity to hold us hostage. It is the root cause of our present hostilities.
We must institute a Manhattan-type project to create a different form of energy than fossil fuel. The greatest possibility is a new way of generating electricity, possible with cold fusion. Perhaps science can find a way to liberate the proton from matter and generate electricity from matter. Either method must be reasonably waste-free.
With abundant electricity, hydrogen could be generated on site for fuel cells to power vehicles. Hydrogen could power internal combustion engines. Electricity can power railways and trams. This is not rocket science. Electricity can heat and cool buildings.
This technology would solve the problem of carbon dioxide causing global warming and atmospheric pollution.
Oil would still be needed for lubricants, natural gas for fertilizers. This amount of oil can be produced domestically.
This technology will require a whole new infrastructure. Finding the systems and developing them will be a long and difficult process. Thirty to 50 years is a short time for this magnitude of changes. The time to start is now!
