Miriam Evalyn Erwin
CALEDONIA, Minn. — Miriam Evalyn (Sheldon) Erwin, 98, formerly of Caledonia, Minn., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2007, at Lake Winona Manor, Winona, Minn.

Miriam was born in Pine Island, Minn., on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, 1909, the oldest child of D.C. and Bessie (Churchill) Sheldon.

Raised in Pine Island, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Carleton College in 1931 with a degree in romance languages. In 1935, Miriam was united in marriage with Ben “Ted” Erwin. After briefly living in Winona and La Crescent, Minn., they made their home in Caledonia and lived there together for more than 50 years, until his death in 1989. She worked for Lloyd Duxbury as a legal secretary and Les Joerg as an accounting secretary, and then became the bookkeeper for Ben Erwin and Son Construction. In the early ’60s, Miriam went back to school, obtained a teaching degree from Winona State University and then taught elementary school in Rushford, Minn., and Caledonia until the mid ’70s. Retirement gave her and Ted time to travel abroad, including Europe and the Middle East. She celebrated her 90th birthday with a trip to Disney World. Miriam was a faithful member of Caledonia United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of the Aidenn Chapter 86 Order of Eastern Star in Caledonia.

As a young woman, she was a member of the Rochester (Minn.) Symphony Orchestra. Miriam later served on the Caledonia Library Board. She had a strong interest in politics and was active in the local Republican Party. For relaxation, Miriam enjoyed playing bridge and had played with the same group of women for more than 50 years. She loved to read and had a lifelong passion for education, which she passed on to all her children. Miriam eventually moved to Winona, becoming one of the first residents of Callista Court, until a hip fracture and age-related problems caused her confinement to Lake Winona Manor.

She is survived by three sons, Richard (Christine) Erwin of Price, Utah, Dr. James (Gretchen) Erwin of Winona and Steve (Peggy) Erwin of Plainview, Minn.; a daughter, Dr. Carol Erwin of Brownsville, Texas; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Curtis Weiss of Pine Island; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ted; children, Janet Louise Erwin (1950) and Dr. Bette Jane Erwin (2006); three brothers, Delavan, Allen and Harold Sheldon; and a sister, Virginia Weiss.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at Caledonia United Methodist Church, 308 N. Kingston St. Pastor Sharon Goetzinger will officiate. Burial will be

She was born May 29, 1913, in rural Westby to Lauritz and Caroline (Moen) Veum. Verna attended a one-room school house, and later graduated from Westby High School in 1932. Her mother sold enough chickens for Verna to be able to move to Milwaukee and attend the Milwaukee Beauty School. There she cared for a rabbi’s family in exchange for her room and board. Upon graduating, she took her first position at the Viroqua (Wis.) Beauty Shop. Two months later Verna purchased the business, employing as many as nine stylists. She did all this at a time when women were not allowed to be in the business world. Several years later, she was honored as the Viroqua Business Woman of the year. Verna owned and operated the salon until she retired and sold the business after 50 years.

In 1937, she met Riley W. Frye who ran the tailor shop next door. He also played in dance bands, where he serenaded her from the stage and won her heart. On Sept. 29, 1939, they were married at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Her life was blessed by the deepest love and companionship of her husband. More than anything they wanted a family and were later blessed with two daughters. Family time was their first priority. They spent many summer vacations with their children traveling across the country. They were married 37 years before Riley’s death. Verna continued to travel with her daughters and grandchildren and remained deeply involved in their lives. Her laughter, sense of humor and the stability that she gave to all of her family will be terribly missed. She touched the hearts of everyone who met her. Until we are together again, rest in peace.

Verna is survived by two daughters, Electa Gilster of La Crosse and Monica Frye Fitzpatrick of Trempealeau, Wis.; three grandchildren, Gina Elliott, Jarod Shrede and Nickolas Fitzpatrick; four great- grandchildren, Savanna, Justin, Alexander and Alyssa; and a sister, Marion Nuttestad of Viroqua.
