If you only had months to live, what would be on your wish list or “bucket list” to do before you died?
That’s the premise of the movie “The Bucket List,” starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, which opens Jan. 11 at theaters nationwide.
In the movie, corporate billionaire Edward Cole and working-class mechanic Carter Chambers have terminal illnesses and end up sharing a hospital room together. They decide to leave the hospital and do all the things they always wanted to do before they “kick the bucket.”
Travel, risk-taking activities and doing special things for friends and loved ones would make many bucket lists.
Here are some wishes that made Coulee Region residents’ bucket lists:
“Two things No. 1, I would make sure my two kids have every opportunity I never had, and No. 2, I would go to space.” Chris Buchanan, La Crosse
“There are two things on my list. I’d give something special to every friend so they’d never forget me, and then I’d go to England because I’ve never been there and always wanted to go there.” David Reedy, piano teacher and owner of Reed Music Studios, Onalaska, Wis.
“I would go to India, and finish a book.” Don Sloan, La Crosse
“I would keep working, because for me, the work that I do is the most rewarding thing I could ever do. I would work less, however, so that I would have more time with my husband and my family at home. I would get in one last trip to Puerto Vallarta, definitely, and one last trip to Colorado to see the rest of my kids and grandkids. And I would make sure they all knew how much I love them.“ The Rev. Diane Martin, 48, pastor at Trinity United Church of Christ
“There’s so many things I’d like to do. It changes by the day. I would like to go spend two weeks in the Galapagos Islands the big tortoises are pretty cool. I’d love to go up in an F-16 and take control of it. I’d like to hike the Pacific Coast Trail all the way.” Joyce Cielecki, horticulture
educator for the UW-Extension in La Crosse
“I would fully experience Las Vegas and all it has to offer. I’d play at the casinos, go to all the shows and stay in a really nice hotel.” Ryan Nell, 20, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse student
“I’d go to the cabin up north and enjoy the sunsets, a walk in the woods and the loons calling on the lake.” Dick Granchalek, president of the La Crosse Area Chamber of Commerce
“I would strengthen my Christian walk and I would do all I could with the time I had to make sure my boys grew up to be good, godly men. I wouldn’t want to travel or anything like that. I’d just want to make sure they were equipped for life after I was gone.” Assembly Speaker Mike Huebsch, R-West Salem
“I would visit with friends and family.” Tina Veglahn, La Crosse
“Until four years ago I had never traveled much. Since then, I have visited Mayan ruins in the Yucatan, toured ancient castles in Ireland, backpacked to Anasazi ruins in Utah and most recently hiked the Inca trail to Machu Picchu in Peru. My list’ of things to do would include seeing places like the Stonehenge in Eng-land, the pyramids in Egypt, the statues on Easter Island, any place that combines travel and history.” La Crosse County Circuit Judge Dale Pasell, Onalaska, Wis.
