The 'Bucket List': What would you do ... ?

.
People often don’t talk about it, but they think about it.

If you only had months to live, what would be on your wish list — or “bucket list” — to do before you died?
That’s the premise of the movie “The Bucket List,” starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, which opens Jan. 11 at theaters nationwide.

In the movie, corporate billionaire Edward Cole and working-class mechanic Carter Chambers have terminal illnesses and end up sharing a hospital room together. They decide to leave the hospital and do all the things they always wanted to do before they “kick the bucket.”

Travel, risk-taking activities and doing special things for friends and loved ones would make many bucket lists.

Here are some wishes that made Coulee Region residents’ bucket lists:

“Two things — No. 1, I would make sure my two kids have every opportunity I never had, and No. 2, I would go to space.” — Chris Buchanan, La Crosse

“There are two things on my list. I’d give something special to every friend so they’d never forget me, and then I’d go to England because I’ve never been there and always wanted to go there.” — David Reedy, piano teacher and owner of Reed Music Studios, Onalaska, Wis.

“I would go to India, and finish a book.” — Don Sloan, La Crosse

“I would keep working, because for me, the work that I do is the most rewarding thing I could ever do. I would work less, however, so that I would have more time with my husband and my family at home. I would get in one last trip to Puerto Vallarta, definitely, and one last trip to Colorado to see the rest of my kids and grandkids. And I would make sure they all knew how much I love them.“ — The Rev. Diane Martin, 48, pastor at Trinity United Church of Christ

“There’s so many things I’d like to do. It changes by the day. I would like to go spend two weeks in the Galapagos Islands — the big tortoises are pretty cool. I’d love to go up in an F-16 and take control of it. I’d like to hike the Pacific Coast Trail all the way.” — Joyce Cielecki, horticulture

educator for the UW-Extension in La Crosse

“I would fully experience Las Vegas and all it has to offer. I’d play at the casinos, go to all the shows and stay in a really nice hotel.” — Ryan Nell, 20, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse student

“I’d go to the cabin up north and enjoy the sunsets, a walk in the woods and the loons calling on the lake.” — Dick Granchalek, president of the La Crosse Area Chamber of Commerce

“I would strengthen my Christian walk and I would do all I could with the time I had to make sure my boys grew up to be good, godly men. I wouldn’t want to travel or anything like that. I’d just want to make sure they were equipped for life after I was gone.” — Assembly Speaker Mike Huebsch, R-West Salem

“I would visit with friends and family.” — Tina Veglahn, La Crosse

“Until four years ago I had never traveled much. Since then, I have visited Mayan ruins in the Yucatan, toured ancient castles in Ireland, backpacked to Anasazi ruins in Utah and most recently hiked the Inca trail to Machu Picchu in Peru. My ‘list’ of things to do would include seeing places like the Stonehenge in Eng-land, the pyramids in Egypt, the statues on Easter Island, any place that combines travel and history.” — La Crosse County Circuit Judge Dale Pasell, Onalaska, Wis.

" If my wife passes on before me, I hope to find a new location for many of the accumulative stuff my wife has collecting dust within our home. While some stuff is cute, I know I don't need most of her things she has acquired. I hope the girls will want her clock collection as an example. Certain exercise fad equipment would go. However, the photos and memories would have to stay because thats what separates us from the animals. She works hard for what she gets and its the gifts that add to the mess. Someday these trinkets will wind up in the landfill, but the memories will live on even as stories to future generations. "

" I would find a way to take my family, kids and grandchildren , to Disney. One thing I never want to do is feel sorry for myself or try to make my family feel bad about my crossing. Too many elders get caught up in complaining to their family about not coming to visit, that just makes less time to visit and your family less likely to come. "

" I'm with ryeguy. Having been critical ill (on surprise) I already do try to live as if it could end any day. Quit accumulating crap, love the people who enrich my life, end terrible relationships, share whatever I can and try not to hurt myself, others, or the planet. It's working great so far :) Let's face it - we're all going to die. "

" Many of us with 6 months to live don't know it yet - witness the fatal accidents and the flood fatalities this past year. I recommend living each day as if you had 6 months to live: visit your friends, go to Thailand or hike those trails, phone your parents or kids, watch the sun set and the moon rise, think about your place in the universe and your role here on earth. How many people would put on their tombstone "I should have bought more crap"? "

" I believe it is easier to think of what I would do if I wasn't diagnosed and given a 6 mo. deadline. No pun intended. I myself have been diagnosed with a terminal condition. I don't know when, neither do any of the M.D.s I've seen. It could be 6 mo. 2 yr., or any day now. Some days I feel alright, some days awful. I haven't seen the movie. In previews Jack and Morgan seem to be having a blast. I've known 3 people who died of cancer. Their last six mo. were miserable. "
