Man injured in downtown shooting

.
Authorities are looking for a man who apparently shot another man after a disagreement over an apparent domestic incident outside a bar in downtown La Crosse just after 2 a.m. Sunday.

One man was shot and taken to Franciscan Skemp Medical Center with what police said they believe are non-life-threatening injuries. The man, who was not identified by police, was listed in stable condition Sunday night.
The suspected shooter ran from the scene and is still being sought. He is described as a black man, about 5-foot-9 and 200 pounds, with a gap between his front teeth. The man was wearing wire-rimmed glasses, a black, puffy jacket and black cap with a yellow “P” on the front.

Police received the call at 2:06 a.m. Sunday, and officers, who were less than a block away, were on the scene within seconds. They came to the aid of the victim, secured the scene and began interviewing witnesses.

According to police, the shooting was preceded by

an altercation between the

male shooter and a woman

outside a downtown club in the 100 block of South Third Street. As the altercation started to turn physical, a passerby stepped in to help break up the couple.

The situation grew heated, and as the parties were starting to separate, the shooter pulled out a gun and fired three shots, hitting a bystander once in the chest. Then he ran from the scene.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting or knows where the suspected shooter is to call police at (608) 789-7200 or Crime Stoppers at (608) 784-TIPS (8377) or 1-800-947-3577.

" In 1987, when Florida enacted such legislation, critics warned that the "Sunshine State" would become the "Gunshine State." Contrary to their predictions, homicide rates dropped faster than the national average.

"it's your inability to fight back!!!" is spot-on correct.

John Lott and David Mustard, in connection with the University of Chicago Law School, examining crime statistics from 1977 to 1992 for all U.S. counties, concluded that the thirty-one states allowing their residents to carry concealed, had significant reductions in violent crime.

So YES, concealed carry would definitely "decrease the amount of violence "

" I have lived in this city all my life, so it shouldn't surprise me the way that it does how the liberals come out on this issue. There have always been those select few that seem to think no matter what the situation is, we can hold hands, light a scented candle, sing kumbaya, and hug evil away. The reason concealed carry has been successful in EVERY state that has "shall issue" permits, is simply because no coward would brandish a weapon if there were the slightest chance there were law-abiding citizens among them carrying. It is not the element of surprise these cowards rely on, it's your inability to fight back!!! "

" Sorry HonestAbe: No legalized carry concealed weapons for this year or any other year. The shooter had the element of surprise working in his favor. He also had the woman in the car so no fool would be able to return fire without possibly hitting her. No way in the drunken stupor we call downtown La Crosse would carry concealed weapon been of help. Instead it could have easily added to damage and lives either being injured or killed. Concealed carry doesn't work any better than not in this case. True firearms experts would agree with this finding therefore another setback for conceal carry. "

" Sadly he'll probably go on his life and continue in his cowardly way like he has with his big bad gun. It's probably a Pittsburgh Pirates jacket that he was wearing because they have black colors and a yellow P on their jerseys. Just a theory. "

" There already is a reward for info on this and other crimes. It is called crime stoppers, which is not really working. I think they need to reward for the type of person they are looking to get info from. In this case maybe offer a nice recently obtained crack pipe. The downtown area is going to hell fast with trash it is attracting. No I don't mean one race over another, every race has their trash. I know many fine upstanding people of every race and I see the trash of every race as well. "

When is wisCONsin going to realize that the scum already carry guns and the law abiding citizen needs the right to protect themselves and there family from these gangbangers "

And how did the police not cordine off the block radius if they were there in a few seconds? Either hes got Jesse Owens speed or lives around that block. "

" Currently OPEN CARRY is 100% legal in Wisconsin and Governor Doyle not only supports open carry 100%, but also encourages it. To that end, the next time I venture downtown, I will be wearing my quick draw rig and carrying my S&W 629 .44 Magnum on my hip, just as the governor suggested. Rest assured that I am both fast and accurate. "

" I have lived in the greater La Crosse area for over 20 years and can say violence against law-abiding citizens is definitely on the rise. It is also obvious that unless we increase the police force some 9,000% that the government cannot protect its’ citizens. The college students started operation River Walk to protect the college students from falling prey to the river. I respectfully suggest we start up operation Safe Streets and have the CITIZENS themselves start patrolling problem areas of the city. "

" How many more people/shootings are going to happen at that bar "club". No other 100+ bars have shootings in 40 years, but this bar had three shot and one person MURDERED not long ago. How many more innnocent BYSTANDERS need to be victims, before the city does something. I wonder how long before the next one. I will try to look through Tribunes files to see how many shootings have occurred around that 'club'. "
