Jacob reborn as top name for boys at La Crosse hospitals

.
Matt Jones and girlfriend Kirby Knudtson of Waukon, Iowa, didn’t choose Jacob as the name for their New Year’s Day baby because it was the most popular boys’ name in 2007 at La Crosse’s two hospitals.

Jacob just sounded like a good, strong name, they said, and they didn’t know anyone in the family with the same name.

“There are a lot of Joneses and no Jacob in the family,” Matt Jones said. “And we both liked the name.”

Jacob Clifford Jones — 7 pounds, 12 ounces and 21 inches long — came into the world at 10:50 p.m. Tuesday at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center. He was the first Jacob born in La Crosse in 2008.

Had he been born only 24 hours earlier, he would have added to the 17 Jacobs recorded at the La Crosse hospitals in 2007.

Jacob was the most popular name for a newborn boy from 1995 to 2001, but had to climb from No. 3 in 2006 to reclaim the top spot last year. Madeline, which was tied for fifth with Grace in 2006, was the most popular girls’ name in 2007. It was also the most popular girls’ name in 2005.

Emma, the No. 1 girls’ name in 2006, tied for third with Olivia last year. Connor, the top boys’ name in 2006, dropped out the top 10 in 2007.

Andrew was the most popular boy’s name for many years, and returned to the No. 2 spot last year after falling out of the top 10. Some new names to the top 10 list were Addyson, Jackson, Carter, Kaden, Lily and Lillian.

Addyson was the No. 1 choice for girls at Gundersen Lutheran, followed by Madeline, Emma and Madison, while seven names — Emily, Grace, Madeline, Isabella, Olivia, Madison and Ava — tied for first place at Franciscan Skemp.

Alexander was the No. 1 boys’ name at Franciscan Skemp, while Jackson was the top boys’ name at Gundersen Lutheran.

At Franciscan Skemp, Kennedy was the second-most-popular girls’ name, and Maria and Sophia also made the list. Carter, Ethan and Kaden were among the top boys’ names at Gundersen Lutheran.

During 2007, Gundersen Lutheran delivered 1,600 babies, 855 boys and 745 girls. Those numbers included one set of triplets and 24 sets of twins.

In 2007, 834 babies — 439 boys, 395 girls and 10 sets of twins — were born at Franciscan Skemp, 39 more than in 2006.

" I do not recall where the story discussed where this couple will be sucking up taxes and don't have health insurance...I didn't read that?

When you were young were judgemental people morally accepted? I feel for those who live in a box.

" Wizard, I'd like you to meet the 21st century. 21st century, meet Wizard.

For some interesting reading about the names of children, pick up the book Freakonomics. There are some very interesting relationships between the education of parents and the names of their children. "

" Wizard....We are not married and my fiance and I do have joint health insurance through his company. You don't have to be married. "

" When I was young the woman was stereotyped for having a child out of wedlock. Practice safe sex, how immorral to have an illegetimate child and suck up everyones taxes. you do know that your taxes will be less if you are married and you maybe both might have some health insurance too. Put an aspirin between your knees and get married first! "

" re;ryeguy, names will continue to circulate over the years, the most popular names now are those of great grandmothers. Thank goodness we don't have so many made up names, just watch Jerry Springer if you want to hear odd names with very odd spellings. "

" When I was a kid it seemed like every boy was named after an apostle unless he was named Michael. Andrew, Thomas, and Matthew are still in the top group, but John, Philip, Peter, James, Simon, Bartholomew, and Matthias seem to have disappeared. There were quite a few Petes, Barts, Phils, Jacks, and Matts in my school. And LOTS of Michaels. All gone now from the top spots in this post Christian era, replaced by oddly spelled Zacharys and Nicholases. "
