State senator: La Crosse area likely site for films

.
The La Crosse area is likely to eventually be a filming location for a Hollywood movie, state Sen. Ted Kanavas, R-Brookfield, said Wednesday at a press conference at the Marcus Cinema theater complex in La Crosse.

Kanavas was lead sponsor in the state Senate for legislation establishing state tax credits, which became available Tuesday, for filming in Wisconsin. He appeared at the press conference with state Sen. Dan Kapanke, R-La Crosse, and with Dave Clements, executive director of the La Crosse Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.
“La Crosse has been blessed,” Kanavas told reporters. “It has been blessed with great locations, whether it’s contemporary office buildings or historic buildings or waterfront property or the bluffs.”

Kapanke noted last week’s news stories about efforts to bring production of “Public Enemies,” the upcoming Johnny Depp film about bank robber John Dillinger, to Wisconsin. The Baraboo News Republic newspaper said filmmakers are looking at a Baraboo bank, and Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton said they have scouted at least 20 Wisconsin sites.

Clements has confirmed he is trying to bring the film to the greater La Crosse area.

“I know they were out looking in Viroqua at one of the banks there,” state Rep. Lee Nerison, R-Westby, told reporters at the press conference. Later Wednesday, he said he was referring to the exterior of the Citizens First Bank, formerly First National Bank, which looks as it did decades ago.

Kapanke noted Wabasha, Minn., was the setting for the movie “Grumpy Old Men.” “They are reaping the benefits of that, and they will for a long, long time,” he said of Wabasha.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for creation of new jobs and economic impact for this part of the state,” Clements said of the new tax credits.

" philly, I'm glad you get it even though some others here don't.

This will happen in La Crosse and other towns in our area!!! "

" Really now. this is a politician telling oyu it is possible or "likely" that this will happen. I believe it when I see Julia Roberts wander in to Nighthawks! "

" This what happens when there is a feeling of impropriety blossoming. I blame it on the CEO/Mayor and Czar of Planning/Inspection Kirch. I also blame it on the lack of diversity and the overlapping cast of limited characters involved in decision making, Committees, Boards, recipients of taxpayer incentives, and expenditures in our fine City. As I have stated before it seems you could fish legally out of my 14' fishing boat with those in power positions in this town. Need any examples? At times this goes way beyond 'politics'. "

" philly- The covert way incentives and projects are carried on, renting houseboats to advertise Lacrosse, proposed Sports Commisssions that will skim money and never open their books, basketball teams who enter town with a 4 day deadline only to find out that somebody requesting partial ownership is on the Civic Center Board? Add to that the Hooter's Hotel and the developers back months later after they told us they were trying to beat a Hilton deadline? Then we hear they have been working on this for well over a year? Now wait and see if they attempt to beat Pettibone Campground off Barron Island for big connected boyz. Gee, I wonder why things are so acidic around here, and people seem gun-shy? You think it might appear shoddy, or they were not told the entire truth in a timely manner? "

" Jeremy, am I correct to assume you are a "half empty" kind of guy? Geez people, do we have to complain about everything, seriously? Don't get me wrong I agree with a lot of the posts on the deficiencies of skid mark and city hall but does EVERYTHING have to be negative? Opening our area up to the motion picture industry is a great idea...tax breaks or not. Wabasha continues to generate money for the community with its connection to Grumpy Old Men and there isn't a single shot of that movie that actually took place in Wabasha! Dyersville, IA still generates tourism money for Field of Dreams and that was released 19 years ago. Lots of potential good things could come out of this even if, god forbid, there may be a few inconviences along the way. "

" I love the fact that the are going to let these film makers come here, shut down streets, drain local law enforcement, hassle the locals, all to make a stupid movie. AND on top of that, they get a 25% tax break on all wages paid out. Why don't they take that tax break and encourage permanent business to come to Wisconsin, instead of the state "likely" getting films. Which translated means we spent a lot of money and aren't getting anything in return for it. "

" They are going to film Deliverance #2 in French Island. They don't even have to pay to dress the extra's, everybody in French Island already wears bid overalls and goes barefoot. "

" Yea I heard they are looking for an impoverished midwest city and they love the look of George street "

" Kapanke? I think he, the Loggers, and Loggers Board Member 'On TOO Many Boards' had better prepare for the same audit and ground rules that they are now beating Pettibone Campground with. After all what is good for the Gander..... There also seems to be a large rent discrepancy. Cannot wait, fair all across the City. In regard to the Movie industry? The last great idea I remember by one of Clements predecessors was to rent a houseboat during the summer and spread the word to surrounding river communities about Lacrosse? We will see. Hope it is not another 'visions of grandeur' raffle. "

" I love Johnny Depp. Oh, and Mr. Clements, please sign me up for one of these new jobs...I could use a high paying job in the entertainment world. I'll be waiting to hear from you soon. Thanks. "

" This is one of those 'recycled-theme' stories--this one pops up every time some nearby town gets a Hollywood movie while we don't; it's 'deja vu all over again.' ------ Ever notice, too, that whenever there's a plane crash, local news orgs run a feel-good bromide interview with some putz yappin' about how he just missed the plane by ten seconds? I've always thought of these stories as vaguely disrespectful toward the victims. "
