Jerry McCabe
WAUKESHA, Wis. — Jerry McCabe, 71, formerly of La Crosse died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008, with his family after a short battle with cancer.

He is survived by his wife, Monie; three daughters, Julie, Linda and Gina; one son, Mike; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Sharon (McCabe) Schwaegerl; three nieces, Andrea, Renee and Kristie; and one great-niece and great-nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant brother.

Funeral services will be at noon Saturday, Jan. 12, at River Glen Church, Waukesha. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the church.

Monica M. St. Jacque

Monica M. St. Jacque, 91, of La Crosse died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at Bethany Riverside Care Center, La Crosse. A Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. James the Less Catholic Church. The Blaschke & Schneider Funeral Homes are assisting the family with arrangements. A complete obituary will follow in Friday’s Tribune.

Nicholas Paul Popovic

Nicholas Paul Popovic, 79, died at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center on Friday, Dec. 21, 2007.

He was born in Chicago on Aug. 19, 1928, to Marcus and Eleanor (Lovas) Popovic. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for three years and attained the rank of sergeant. On Feb. 16, 1952, he married Dona Marie Cole in Chicago. He worked for the Admiral-Rockwell-Magic Chef for more than 38 years before retiring and moving to La Crosse.

He was an active member of the Harry J. Olson Senior Citizens, delivering mobile meals for RSVP, totaling more than 1,000 volunteer hours. He also played in the “Off Beat Band.”

He is survived by his wife, Dona; nieces, Karen Ranos and Mary Hanki, both of Chicago; many other nieces; nephews; and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ann; his parents; and a sister, Vi.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 809 Gillette St., La Crosse. The Rev. Thomas O’Neill will officiate, and burial will be in French Island Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of service today at the funeral home.

Dorothy M. Pottratz

EITZEN, Minn. — Dorothy M. Pottratz, 81, of Eitzen left this life Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, from Caledonia Care and Rehab.

She was born May 14, 1926, in La Crosse to Leo and Cecil (Hartley) Pottratz Jr. Dorothy attended schools in Eitzen, Caledonia, Minn., and then Hamline University and the University of Minnesota, where she majored in English with a minor in home economics. After graduation, she was the Houston County 4-H Club agent and was selected as Minnesota’s representative to the United Kingdom as part of the IFYE (International Farm Youth Exchange) for three months.

Dorothy was later employed at Sedard Travel in Minneapolis and Rochester Post-Bulletin as a proofreader. For several years, she owned and operated a gift shop in La Crosse. Dorothy was an avid geneologist and spent hours searching through old newspapers and censuses for information about her family as well as researching early settlers, the origins and settlements of the Eitzen area.

Survivors include two sisters, Neva (Charles) Auenson and Alice (Walter) Gensmer; a sister-in-law, Mary Jane Pottratz; and nieces and nephews, Jean Pottratz, John (Bonnie) Pottratz, Kari (Marvin) Lehmann, Frank (Julie) Auenson, Gail (Kevin) Ruddy and Steve Gensmer. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Dell Pottratz.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, at Haugen-Roble-Jandt Funeral Home, 518 W. Main St., Caledonia. The Rev. Debra A. Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in St. Luke’s UCC North Cemetery at a later date. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of services Monday at the funeral home.

Steven A. Meyer

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb./PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. — Steven A. Meyer, 49, of South Sioux City and formerly of Prairie du Chien passed away Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at his home. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Jan. 19 at Garrity Funeral Home, and burial with military rites will be in Evergreen Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to services Jan. 19 at the funeral home.

Robert Raymond Rice

WILTON/WESTBY, Wis. — Robert Raymond Rice, 69, of Wilton and Westby died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Medical Center in La Crosse. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Wilton. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7:45 p.m. prayer service, and 10 a.m. to services Friday, both at the church.

Smith-Nelson Funeral Home, Wilton, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Robert Elmer Bradley

KENDALL, Wis. — Robert Elmer Bradley, 79, of Kendall died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008, at his home. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Kendall. The Rev. Richard C. Dickman will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to call from 4 until 8 p.m. Friday at Smith-Nelson Funeral Home, Kendall, and from 10 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the church.

Beth Lorraine Schmidt

ETRICK, Wis. — Beth Lorraine Schmidt, 55, of rural Ettrick passed away Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008, at her home peacefully with her husband at her side.

Beth was born Feb. 21, 1952, in La Crosse to Loyd and Jeanette (Mallum) Ekern. She was baptized and confirmed at Hardies Creek Lutheran Church. She graduated from Gale-Ettrick High School in 1970 and Fairview School of Nursing, Minneapolis in 1973.

Working as a registered nurse at the University of Minnesota, Masonic Cancer Center and St. Francis Hospital, La Crosse, Beth was highly dedicated to the nursing profession. She was gentle and compassionate patient advocate with special gifts for healing. Beth married Harlan Schmidt of Ettrick on July 12, 1975, at Hardies Creek Lutheran Church. They owned and operated an organic dairy farm in Hardies Creek to the present time.

Beth was an active member of Hardies Creek Lutheran Church, serving on numerous committees over the years. She was a member of the choir, Hill and Valley band, Peace Circle, WELCA and Endowment committee. She was a Sunday school teacher and often lent her musical talents to worship services. Beth served as a 4-H project and music leader for the Glasgow-Hardies Creek Busy Bees 4-H club and was a member of the Trempealeau County 4-H Executive Board. She enjoyed performing with the band “Joey and the Creek Chicks with Bob and Lani.” She was active with the G-E-T sustainability group. Her hobbies included traveling, hiking, reading, gardening, pie-making, sewing, mitten-making, attending Democratic political events, plus spending time with family and grandchildren.

Since first diagnosed with cancer 12 years ago, Beth made the absolute most out of every day of her life. Her bravery and faith gave her the strength to beat the odds multiple times and to keep her chin up when the news was tough to take. She dearly loved her family and vast circle of friends and was a true inspiration and blessing to all who knew her.

Beth is survived by her loving husband, Harley; five children, Lisa (Loren) Kuderer of Hartford, Wis., Karl (Ellen) Schmidt of Minneapolis, Lori Schmidt of Galesville, Wis., Lani (Bob) Nichols of Ettrick, and Kyle Schmidt of Milwaukee;, her mother, Jeanette Ekern of Onalaska, Wis.; two sisters, Linda (Larry) Osegard of Neillsville, Wis., and Joanne (Mark) Hutson of Coon Valley, Wis.; 11 grandchildren, Jessica and Austin Kuderen, Henri and Hugo Schmidt, Dylan and Mykeila Schmidt, Raschelle (Juan) Comparan and Leo, Ryan, Corwin and Cayla Nichols; special niece and god-daughter, Molly Hutson; sisters-in-law, Jean (Don) Marg of Neillsville, Wis., Marlene (Richard) Dopp of Canby, Ore., and Connie Schmidt of Lynnwood, Wash.; and a brother-in-law, Donald (Elizabeth) Schmidt of Melrose, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her father, Loyd.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at Hardies Creek Lutheran Church, 18481 N. City Road DD, Ettrick. The Rev. John Ashland will officiate, and burial will be at Hardies Creek Church Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, and again from 10 a.m. until the time of services Saturday, both at the church.

Dickinson Family Funeral Home is assisting the family will arrangements.

Kenneth C. Getter

VIROQUA, Wis. — Kenneth C. Getter, 77, of Viroqua died Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 8, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Hospital, La Crosse.

He was born May 12, 1930, in Viroqua to Henry Clayton and Grace (Gorrell) Getter. Kenny worked on the family farm until 1952 when he joined the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He served with the 19th Infantry Regiment Truck Company, where he received the United Nations and National Defense Service Medal and the Korean Service Ribbon with Bronze Service Star and was then honorably discharged in 1954.

On Oct. 6, 1956, Kenny married Margery Marks at her families’ farm. The couple then moved to the Getter family farm on Pleasant Ridge, where he milked cows, raised tobacco and did custom farm work for others until 1989. After moving to Viroqua, Kenny made frequent daily trips back to the farm until his health declined.

He was a lifelong member of VFW Running-Johnson-Ray Post 3032, where he was a past commander and vice commander. Kenny admired his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them. He enjoyed playing cards with neighbors, going to and participating in tractor pulls and watching Larry at the Hill Climbing Races. Kenny was also an avid hunter. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Margery Getter, Viroqua; two sons, Larry (Kym) Getter, Viroqua, and Michael (Cookie) Getter, Viroqua; a daughter, Iva (Matt) Lind, Cashton, Wis.; seven grandchildren, Corey (Miranda) Leis, Cashton, Rian Getter, Viroqua, Nicole Leis, Madison, Amanda and Jennifer Leis, Cashton, and Andrew and Zach Lind, Sheboygan, Wis.; three great-grandchildren, Brianna, Grace and Katherine Leis, all of Cashton; and two brothers, Ray (Eileen) Getter, Viroqua, and Donald Getter, Rockton, Wis. He is further survived by nieces; nephews; other relatives; and friends.

Kenny was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Dwain Getter on Dec. 7, 1984.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home. Officiating at the service will be Minister Nathan Prong, with burial to follow in Liberty Pole Cemetery. Honors accorded by Running-Johnson-Ray VFW Post 3032 and the United States Army Honors Team. The family will greet relatives and friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, at Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home, Viroqua, and again from 10 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the funeral home.

The family would like to thank the staff at Vernon Manor, Vernon Memorial and Franciscan Skemp Hospital for the care and compassion given to Kenny during his time there.

Elmer Campbell, 62, of La Crosse passed away at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008. A complete notice will follow at a later date. Blaschke & Schneider funeral home is assisting the family.
