People’s Food Co-op has no plans for second location

.
The People’s Food Co-op in downtown La Crosse currently has no plans for a second location, although it recently was approached by developers of the planned $35 million, 15-acre development along Theater Road in Onalaska, Wis., the co-op’s general manager said Friday.

A site plan filed this week with the city of Onalaska for the proposed Eagle Bluff Centre lists a food co-op and a bank as two of seven planned buildings, but gives no business names.
Spokesmen for the project said Monday it includes a 12-screen cinema, an extended-stay hotel with 88 rooms, one or two restaurants and retail and office space. They were not available for comment Friday on whether the site plan reference was to People’s Food Co-op.

“They did approach us to ask us if we’d have some interest” in being part of the project, perhaps 60 days ago, said Michelle Schry, the food co-op’s general manager. “We said we’d take a look at it.” That hasn’t happened yet, she said.

“It’s probably way down the road” if the co-op ever builds a second location, Schry said. “We’ve had a lot of people ask us if we’d look at Onalaska” for a second location. But there are no plans at this time to build one, she said.

" I really don't want to venture into what they pay...but....organic everything....comes at a price....and how they arrive at those $2.00 plus veggies....with that said....if you want to pay for ogranic.....have at it....go for it...just don't impose it on me... "

" Nice place to shop. But, with the prices they charge, it's too bad they only pay 1/2 of a living wage to their help. Not much of an asset to the city considering that serious of a flaw. "

" Hank Hill joined and worked the co op in Arlen until they sold out to the corperates. Great idea, although organic is overated. Heck, even Houston Minnesota has a Coop but not organic based just a normal store. "

" If people want a co-op in Onalaska, they should start one. It's indicative of how poorly the cooperative concept is understood that people think someone else has to start (or branch) a co-op for them. Cooperatives are all about people doing things for themselves. Call a meeting, see who is interested, read the statutes (185 and 193), start small and GO. If you build it, they will come. "

" I think that the Co-op is a great idea. Organic, healthy food should be available for everyone. However, alot of the people in this area, myself included, can't afford the prices for the food at the Co-op. It's very unfortunate because it is a very nice place to shop. "
