I-90 reopens after multiple crashes on bridge near Minnesota border

.
Traffic on westbound Interstate 90 has resumed near the Minnesota border after it was shut down for almost two hours due to multiple crashes on the Mississippi River bridge about 2:30 p.m. today, according to La Crosse area law enforcement.

About 12 vehicles were involved in the chain-reaction crashes on the bridge, but only one woman had to be transported to Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center with head and back injuries, authorities said.
Eight people were treated and scene and released, said Tri-State Ambulance Director Matt Zavadsky.

Four vehicles collided in two separate crashes, which then triggered

a pileup of eight vehicles near the foot of the bridge, authorities said.

Driver Jesse Carlson, 24, of Dresbach, Minn., was on his way home from work when he saw a vehicle spin out on the bridge and collide with another vehicle. He braked trying to avoid the other vehicles and found himself in the middle of the pileup.

“I must have got hit four or five times,” Carlson said, his 1994 tan Honda Accord smashed between four other vehicles.

Carlson managed to get out of his vehicle by climbing out the back passenger window. It was his first car crash, he said.

Eastbound I-90 also was closed down for a period of time to allow emergency vehicles access to the crash site, according to La Crosse County emergency dispatch.

Law enforcement also advises heavy snowfall in the area has made travel hazardous, so motorists should use caution.

" I'm glad they finally reported the truth. It was several accidents and not just one. I was driving in the middle of all these cars (in my own 3000lb toboggan) and there wasn't anything anyone could do. I don't know how I made it through but it was like driving a slalom course. These accidents were caused by snow, ice,(duh) and once you passed exit#2 and got by the water, the wind was barreling through there like crazy. The cars in the ditch weren't included in the accident report unless they made contact with another car. The cars in the ditch extended from Exit#2 all the way to 1/4 mile past the Dresbach exit. I am also very happy no one died, but saddened by the fact that people don't slow down in this kind of weather. "

" Sometimes accidents just happen (hence the word "accident"). It doesn't always mean that those involved were doing something reckless and should lose their licenses. Thankfully, no one lost his or her life. "

" what is wrong with people? whenever it snows, people around here forget how to drive!!! I have not been in an accident since 1996 when i first got my license and was a new driver. it's not that hard! drive with good tires, drive slowly, and brake early when you need to stop. come on people! the people that cause these accidents should lose their licenses.
