Ervin R. Doehling
LA CRESCENT, Minn. — Ervin R. Doehling, 85, of La Crescent died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at Golden Living Center in La Crescent.

He was born in Rollingstone, Minn., on Nov. 19, 1922, to Frank and Helen (Matthees) Doehling. He married Lorraine Kieffer on June 6, 1949, and they later divorced. He later married Jacquelyn (Kabat) Beach on May 12, 1973, in La Crescent.

Earlier in his life, Ervin worked at several different jobs, including the Altura (Minn.) Turkey Plant, working as a farmhand for Cletus and Mary Walch and also for Walch Farm Service of Altura, and also driving a milk truck for Altura Creamery. He eventually went to work for Fiberite in Winona, Minn., where he worked for many years until retiring. Following his “retirement,” Ervin worked for Bauer’s Market in La Crescent for several years.

Ervin was a loving and attentive husband, father and grandfather who never missed his grandchildren’s sporting events. He was an avid sports fan, especially the Vikings and Twins.

He is survived by his wife, Jacquelyn; one son, Donald (Helen) Doehling of Altura, Minn.; one daughter, Sue Doehling of Rochester, Minn.; stepchildren, Robin Beach of Caledonia, Minn., Ronald (Mary) Beach of La Crescent, Ricky (LaVonne) Beach of La Crescent and Richard (Patricia) Beach of Dakota, Minn.; 19 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandchild, three brothers and one sister.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home, 412 S. Third St., La Crescent. Pastor Paul Ibisch will officiate. Burial will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery in Dakota, Minn., at a later date. Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 11:30 a.m. until time of services.

Memorials are preferred and will be donated to Medical Social Services Kidney Fund at the Mayo Clinic.

Janice Merle Benedict

BLAIR, Wis. — Janice Merle Benedict, 88, of Blair died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at Tri-County Memorial Hospital in Whitehall, Wis.

Janice was born May 21, 1919, in Tappen Coulee, rural Blair, to Aaron and Tilda (Hanson) Granlund. Janice was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Blair. She attended Sunnyside Grade School and graduated from Blair High School.

Janice married Levin M. Benedict on June 25, 1941, in Blair. Together they farmed in Skutley Coulee in rural Taylor, Wis., until 1980 when they moved to Blair. Levin preceded Janice in death in 1991.

Janice had a strong faith, enjoyed flowers and gardening, playing cards, genealogy and her Norwegian heritage.

Janice is survived by 10 children, Judith (Arlen) Doughty of Elmwood, Wis., Gary (Rachel) Benedict of Beaumont, Texas, Warren (Kathleen) Benedict of Taylor, Wis., Marcia (Ronald) Lovette of Blair, Theron (Dorothy) Benedict of Hanover, Wis., Marvin (Terri) Benedict of Solon Springs, Wis., Leslie (Connie) Benedict of Madison, Colleen (Gary) Skaar of Taylor, Jonathan (Marie) Benedict of Taylor and Robert (friend, Sharon Siefert) Benedict of Melrose, Wis.; 29 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lavern (Norma) Granlund of Janesville, Wis.

In addition to her parents and husband, Janice was preceded in death by two brothers, Arnold and Carroll Granlund; a son-in-law, Donald Thomley; and a great-grandson, Zane Stoeklen.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at First Lutheran Church, with burial in Rest Haven Cemetery, both in Blair. Pastor Mark Kvale will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, at Jack Funeral Home in Blair and also one hour prior to services at the church Monday.

Steve ‘Scuba’ Polus

STODDARD, Wis. — Steve “Scuba” Polus, 49, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, due to complications of pneumonia.

He was born May 16, 1958, in Winona, Minn., to Roger and Bernice (Julson) Polus. He found the love of his life, Tracy Halverson, in June 1976. They were married in August that same year. Steve was a “live life to the fullest” type of man. He loved hunting, fishing, playing cards and shaking dice, but he loved his family and friends even more. Steve had managed Sylvan Glen Supper Club in Stoddard for many years and will be greatly missed by the many patron friends he made over the years.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Tracy; his sons, Christopher Polus and Justin (Michelle) Polus; his daughter, Angeline (Anthony) Rizzolo; his four granddaughters, Katelynn Spears, and Leah, Mackenzie and Madalynn Polus; his loving mother, Bernice; brother, Doug (Kathy) Polus; sisters, Marsha (Butch) Becker and Debbie (Bruce) Erickson; mother-in-law Harriet Halverson; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Roger; brother, Wayne; uncle, Gilman Julson; grandparents; and father-in-law, Clayton Halverson.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home, 200 West Ave. S., La Crosse. The Rev. Lawrence B. Berger will officiate. The family will greet relatives and friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 10 am. until time of services Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

Carol A. Garves

BANGOR, Wis. — Carol A. Garves, 46, of Bangor died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse after a very recent diagnosis of cancer.

She was born Feb. 14, 1961, in La Crosse to Robert and Elaine (Horstman) Garves. Carol graduated in 1979 from Bangor High School as her class valedictorian. She then attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison for three years. Carol was employed for more than 20 years at Northern Engraving Co. in Sparta, Wis., and was also a Mary Kay representative for several years. She was an avid reader and enjoyed stamping.

Survivors include her parents of Bangor; two sisters, Jean Garves of La Crosse and Ruth (Craig) Gander of Ames, Iowa; four brothers, Wayne (Deb), David and Jeff (Donna), all of Bangor, and Donn of Port Washington, Wis.; aunts, uncles and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 401 16th Ave. N., Bangor. The Rev. Roy Hefti will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Friends may call today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Jandt Funeral Home, Hwy. 162 and Hattan Street, Bangor, and at the church Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of services.

Marian J. Lambert

ONALASKA, Wis. — Marian J. Lambert, 90, of Onalaska died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at Onalaska Care Center.

She was born Feb. 4, 1917, in La Crosse to Frank and Mae Kratzer. She married Forest Lambert, and they later divorced. Mae worked for the Auto Lite Co. and was the owner and operator of the Dairy Delight ice cream stand in Onalaska.

She is survived by a son, Tom Lambert of Albuquerque, N.M.; a nephew, Ronald Espe of Onalaska; and one grandson, Brad Lambert of Florida.

Memorial services will be Monday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 401 Main St., Onalaska.

Shirley Jean Stigen

MESA, Ariz. — Shirley Jean Stigen, 78, of Mesa and formerly of Wisconsin passed away Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008. Services are entrusted to Melcher’s Chapel of the Roses in Mesa, (480) 964-4537.

Betty S. Rudie

SOLDIERS GROVE, Wis. —Betty S. Rudie, 62, of Soldiers Grove died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua, Wis. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Seland Funeral Home of Coon Valley,Wis.

Marlene A. Purves

Marlene A. Purves, 56, of La Crosse passed away Monday, Jan. 21, 2008, at her home. A memorial gathering will be from 10 a.m to 3 p.m. Saturday at French Island Campbell Community Center, 617 Plainview Road, La Crosse. Dickinson Family Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.

Dorothy A. Kreul

BOSCOBEl, Wis. — Dorothy A. Kreul, 78, of Boscobel passed away Wednesday, Jan. 23 2008, at Boscobel Area Health Care in Boscobel. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Boscobel. Burial will be in Boscobel Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to services Monday at the church. Earl Murphy

NECEDAH, Wis. — Earl Murphy, 75, of Necedah passed away Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, at South Padre Island, Texas. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Necedah. Burial with military rites will be in Bayview Cemetery in Necedah. Robert C. Sheldon

ONALASKA, Wis. — Robert C. Sheldon, 89, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.

He was born Dec. 2, 1918, in Streetor, Ill., to Charlie and Ethel (Little) Sheldon. Bob married Dawn (Standiford) on Aug. 20, 1942, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 3, 2003. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1942 until 1945. Bob enjoyed his family, bowling and golf.

He is survived by a sister, Maryalyce (Earl) Heslip of La Crosse; a niece, Robin Heslip of Croatia; a nephew, David Scott (Kathryn) Heslip of La Crosse; a great-nephew, David Heslip; great-nieces, Dorothy Meghan and Danielle (Robert) Speer; great-grandnephews, Tyler James Speer and Cody Scott Speer; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Jann and her children, Allyson, Christine and David.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 1425 Jackson St., La Crosse. The Rev. Scott Skogen will officiate, and entombment will be in the Chapel of Devotion Mauso-leum at Woodlawn Cemetery in La Crosse. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 10 a.m. until services.

Charles ‘Chuck’ R. Norman

READSTOWN, Wis. — Charles “Chuck” R. Norman, 65, of Readstown died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008, at his home. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, at Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home in Viroqua, Wis. Friends may call from noon to services Feb. 3 at the funeral home. ARCADIA, Wis. — Sylvester S. Symitczek, 82, of Arcadia died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at his home. WHITEHALL, Wis. — Rosemary A. Guinn, 81, of Whitehall died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008, at Tri-County Memorial Nursing Home in Whitehall. Arrangements are pending with Jack Funeral Home in Whitehall.
