Everyone’s discussing global warming

.
Scientists aren’t the only ones who should be examining global warming, says Juliee Wendland, a natural science major at Viterbo University.

“There’s politics, there’s sociology, there’s spirituality,” Wendland said. “Everybody should be talking about it.”
On Wednesday and Thurdsay, everybody will have their chance.

Wendland has helped organize a Viterbo event that will coincide with “Focus the Nation: Global Warming Sol-utions for America,” a national event intended to spark discussion about climate change at more than 1,600 colleges, universities and other institutions.

The local event will kick off at 6 p.m. Wednesday with local organic food vendors and video presentations at Viterbo’s Reinhart Center. At 7 p.m., Stephen Schneider, a climate scientist at Stanford University, will speak via remote video.

Thursday’s events begin at 9 a.m. with fair trade goods available in the Reinhart Center lobby. Speakers include Chris McClead, the campus minister, who will speak on faith and environmental justice, and Chris Schneider from Honda Motorwerks. Val Schute of River Architects and Nick Nichols from Gundersen Lutheran will speak at 4:10 p.m. on LEED certified buildings.

“In order to have change, you first have to have awareness,” said Dorothy Lenard, an administrator in the natural sciences department and a member of Viterbo’s environmental sustainability committee. “I think that’s what this is about.”

La Crosse has many different groups talking about how to live more sustainably, Lenard said, but besides on Earth Day, there have been few community-wide events like this one.

“Our natural world does have an effect on us,” Lenard said. “Some people live so much between their car, their house and office that they think they’re not a part of it.”

" For "just-observing", don't confuse WEATHER with CLIMATE.

Do a little research if you need to but don't get the idea that a one-day (or even a one year) shift in temperature, pressure or precipitation is the equivalent of climate. "

" I am ready to join the true believers like the commercial with hoards assembling before dawn holding mattresses and trash can lids against the rising sun. Please answer just a couple of questions. 1) What was the man made force that caused the glaciers which covered the Northern Hemisphere as far south as Central Wisconsin to begin to melt 6,000 years ago? 2) For 30 years there have been scientific instruments on Mars. During that time there has been a slight increase in average temperature on Mars. What man made force has caused the climate change on Mars? Please, Please, I am ready to believe! I am ready to blame capitalism and America just give me a morsel. I want to matter, I want to believe! "

We do so much much more and are still expected to bow down to the posers in green which I can say I am not!! Shame on you for putting me in a class with the true takers in the world "

" Let's see here....40 some odd degrees today....as low as -13 degrees tomorrow...and you think WE can control the weather...this alone should wake you up that mother nature will do what mother nature CAN do regardless if I drink a bottled water from a plastic container. "

" As for the rest of you nay-sayers, please tell me what is wrong with erring on the side of caution and creating less pollution?
Just because we CAN doesn't mean we SHOULD consume, consume, consume.
At best we are creating plastic waste that will be with us for centuries. At worst we are killing the planet. So, why not slow down our comsumtion and polluting?

Please, someone tell me why we can't have a new economy based on developing non-destructive, non-polluting energy sources.

We have made the industrial, oil-based economy in a little more than a lifespan. Just because that is the way it is today doesn't mean it always has to be this way. Only those who are profiting from the pollution will tell you that we can't change. "

Did he also tell you why all the other thousands of end-timers throughout the years have been wrong? Was God just messing with their heads? That God--what a practical joker! "

" Mack, I'm not saying we shouldn't try harder, I'm just saying we alone are not to blame. Of course in a way WE are the cause of the polution coming out of India and China. We want our megalomart cheap stuff, we don't want to pay for US made so let's send the stuff off shore to be made where sweat shops are legal, emissions standards don't exist, and all the while we can say we are helping emerging nations. And, oh yeah, let's pay no attention to the impact increased volcanic activity has on global warming. Alaska was once a verdent forest, perhaps nature is just correcting the mistake of the ice age and returning the earth to its original state. There are just too many variables to blame humans in the US alone, what an arrogant people to think we can "fix" this. "

" The root cause of the environmental declines we are facing throughout the world is a fulfillment of Bible prophecy. Once one-fourth part of the earth is destroyed (Re.6:7-8) we will move forward to the next Seal events, followed by Trumpet events, followed by Plague events. The earth is on a downhill slid; it will not recover. The first four Trumpet events will destroy an additional one-third part (Re.8:7-12).

She states the the Sun is a variable we cannot forget. Further she says the increase in magantism at the centor of the solar system corralates quite strongly with temperature rised here on earth. That their are some 5 million paramaters that must go into a good climate model and it would have to compute for longer than the age of the universe to know something. "

Teiresias wrote on Jan 28, 2008 1:44 PM:

" Antieverything, what a perfectly entitled, American thing to say. So when the climate gets nasty and a tornado rips aart your house or a flood strikes and wrecks your stuff the rest of us can say "tough luck" because we've done enough.
You want to talk about pigs? My guess is that you consume more in a month than most people in China or India consume in a year. "

" Well Big Mike; Science once was empahatic that the world was flat and woe be it to anyone who disagreed. Science once stated with equal vigor that black holes are only fiction. Anyone unwilling to look into the background and circumstances surrounding this current bevy of scientists and their evidence and also fully believe all their theories to be fact ,as claimed, has joined the society of the closed minds. Thank goodness for sincere open questioning minds that are willing to step back from the current dogma and respect the fallabilty of the human mind. "

Mack wrote on Jan 28, 2008 1:12 PM:

" Nikki and others: It is the accelerated increase in global warming over the last 150 years that has scientist's attention. This coincides with the industrial revolution and our rampant burning of fossil fuels. We have a moral obligation to future generations to do what we can. So often we hear that we don't have to worry because we won't be here. I cannot think of a greater sign of moral bankruptcy that statements of that nature. "

We along with some, not all of Europe are always footing the bill. The Mid and far east pollute and the governments dont give a hoot.PIGS! Until there is commitment from the Chinas,Indias, etc I think we have done enough for now. "

" This is not to say the we should work hard to reduce pollution. The pollution we cause will result in loss of clean water and polluted air. However as to the air clean or not it will not stop or significantly reduce global warming. The main purpose for controlling pollution is for the overall health of mankind and animals. "

Senior Advocate wrote on Jan 28, 2008 10:36 AM:

" I believe that most people feel that we are in a global warming period. The concern is that mankind is being blamed for this. Please follow the money trail. A global Stock market has allready been set up for buying and selling carbon credits backed by the World Bank. This is the beginning of a major financial market. The earth has gone through the cooling and warming for eons. Our contribution is miniscule at best. The primary source is the sun and the earths physical realtionship to it and what that causes to the make up of our planet. "

" Seems to me we can at least be talking about more wind and solar energy. It's not the end all, but at least it's better than nothing. Problem is no one wants to live next to a wind farm. Is anyone in the area specializing in installing solar panels on houses/businesses? "

Mack wrote on Jan 28, 2008 9:11 AM:

" There is no downside to making the changes to reduce global warming unless you have an extremely narrow economic view and cannot imagine living in a sustainable manner. With populations increasing exponentially, everybody's share of the natural resources is going to get smaller. American's just have an unjustly hard time dealing with less consumption. Nuclear power is not viable until we learn how to effectively and safely deal with the nuclear waste. "

Tax Justice wrote on Jan 28, 2008 8:18 AM:

" If you really believe that global warming doesn't exist, then perhaps you would have the sense to recognize that the economic costs of fossil fuels and NUCLEAR are skyrocketing. Fighting for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energies are the only real answers to reduce the cost, waste, and consequences of terrible foreign policy that we now suffer from. Generating renewable energy creates 4-1 more jobs than fossil fuels, and energy efficiency measures have repeatedly been shown to reduce energy needs by more than 40%. I'll stand by Dorothy and anyone who has the vision and the courage to save TAXPAYERS billions of dollars. "
