Tribune wins 10 WNA awards for news coverage in 2007

.
WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. — The La Crosse Tribune won 10 awards for news coverage at the Wisconsin Newspaper Association’s annual meeting Friday in Wisconsin Dells.

Tribune reporter Joe Orso placed first in environmental reporting for his story “Greener Pastures” on environmental efforts at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.
Former Tribune reporter Dan Simmons, now working for the North County Times in southern California, also earned first place for local columns.

The Tribune competed against other daily newspapers in the state with circulations of 25,000 or more.

Second place awards went to reporter Autumn Grooms, who placed in the feature category for the story of a Mauston, Wis., man who adopted a boy from Iraq; reporter Reid Magney in investigative reporting for his story about terminating parental rights; and photographer Peter Thomson in the sports photo category.

The Tribune’s four third-place winners were opinion editor Dick Mial for editorial pages, the staff at large for spot news coverage during the August flooding, Bob Lamb for local outdoors columns and Magney for environmental reporting.

The Tribune also earned an honorable mention award in special sections for the package “Recalling the Recall” by Simmons and intern Flannery Cerbin.

Tribune graphic artists Jeremy Harnisch, Michelle Oitzman and Jan Gerke took home awards in the advertising competition.

Former Tribune city editor Chris Hardie, now publisher of the weekly and shopper division of the River Valley Newspaper Group, was honored by the association as weekly publisher of the year. The Coulee News of West Salem, one of the group’s publications, was named weekly newspaper of the year, and other papers in the group took home numerous news and advertising awards.

" Badger, your aka name certainly befits you.
I'm currently saving the taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars working pro-bono as an adviser and private task force member. What more do you want from me? All I do is give, give, give, but it is never good enough for you.

" Of course, you will need to maintain all services that are currently funded by the tax payer, at their current level at least. Then, with your great plan, you could even increase the service that we receive. I will bet you would be so good, that we would not need to worry about clearing our sidewalks. The City would run so efficiently, they would do it for us! Maybe, if we would be willing to do it ourselves, we could get a rebate from the city on our taxes! Man, where do I sign up to be your campain manager! "

" ollie, Great! I am glad you have all the answers! Come out from behind you annonymous computer and Run for public office, state your views publicly for all to hear and if you can make this a better City, County, School District, or Country, while still saving me tax money (either income or property) I will be the first to vote for you. In fact, I will even campain for you! "

" Badger, I do have all the answers, because I have common-sense, morals, and values. Gutless media have perpetuated the downfall of the people. "

" Dear what_that_too,
Feel free to write me at dsimmons@nctimes.com. Sorry for the confusion over the previously listed address.
All the best,

" We, as a readers/consumers, should have been allowed to vote. I can tell you, the outcome would be a lot different. : : : Say, by the way, what is Dan Simmon's correct new email? One listed at his Tribune "retirement" never got answered. : : : And, 2nd question, why are all new employees given "lee.net" emails, rather than tribune.com? : : : Is the revolving door spinning THAT fast? "

" kudos to the writers that won 'awards'. but remember, these 'awards' voted on by a very close group of like minded people. i put these 'awards' in the same class as Reverend Al, from the Church of Global Warming, winning and Oscar and a Nobel Peace Prize. it shows how cheapened 'awards' have become in our society. "

" ollie..... that appears to be your job. You seem to have all the answers as to how to fix things in this city yet I don't see you or any of the other cronies like Northsider that complain constantly about anything having to do with the city or schools running for city council or the school board. I would suggest to you that if you truly want to see things changed, you should qiut hiding behind the anonymity of these blogs and run for office. You would then be able to address all of your concerns and offer solutions to all the problems you see. Or... you could just complain. I think we all know which you will choose. "

" Funny.....I don't see an award for reporting on corrupt businessmen and government. "
