Fehrenbach becomes UW-L’s new 3-point king

The chance to break the record and just get it over with early in the game Saturday was staring him square in the face. And Chris Fehrenbach came this close to passing it up.

Fehrenbach paused a second before draining the shot that was his school-record 207th career 3-pointer in the UW-La Crosse men’s basketball team’s 62-53 WIAC victory over UW-Superior at Mitchell Hall. The senior guard noticed he was a couple of steps beyond the arc and debated whether or not he should drive to the basket for a layup.

But Fehrenbach, who broke the record Casey Taggatz had held since 2004, made the right choice. His 3-pointer at the 18-minute, 33-second mark of the first half was part of UW-L’s game-opening 8-0 run.

“I just wanted us to come out and start strong,” Fehrenbach said. “(Superior) took it to us the last time we played them.”

Fehrenbach scored a season-high 31 points when Superior beat the Eagles 71-61 on Jan. 5 in Superior, Wis. On Saturday, he scored 15 of his game-high 21 points in the first half. He finished the game going 3-for-6 from 3-point range.

But Fehrenbach’s first 3-pointer was a good tone-setter for the Eagles. It was the kind of shot UW-L coach Ken Koelbl has seen Fehrenbach make time and again.

“I’m happy for Chris,” Koelbl said. “What he’s done is a credit to his consistency.”

And even though Fehrenbach is positive someone will break his record in the coming years, he could smile about what he did on Saturday.

“(Koelbl) told us in the locker room after the game that a lot of great players have played at UW-L,” Fehrenbach said. “I’m proud that I’ve been consistent through four years, and that I’ve had fun playing, too.”
