Advance Transformer to close Boscobel plant

.
BOSCOBEL, Wis. — Philips Lighting Electronics North America will close its Advance Transformer lighting components plant in Boscobel later this year, which will leave 188 people without a job.

In announcing the plant closing, the company cited changes in technology and the marketplace.
Layoffs are expected to begin about April 6 and continue until about Sept. 30, the company said in the plant-closing notice received Thursday by the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. As a result of the closure, Advance Transformer will move its remaining magnetic ballast manufacturing operations to Juarez, Mexico, it said in the notice.

A small community like Boscobel “will feel this loss,” U.S. Rep. Ron Kind, D-La Crosse, said in a press release. He said his staff is a resource for those who will be affected, and said he is committed to finding ways to reinvest in Boscobel.

The state agency’s Dislocated Worker Program will assist the affected workers. Orientation sessions for the employees will be held Tuesday.

The state agency also is providing a $25,000 grant to the Southwest Wisconsin Workforce Development Board to begin providing services for the affected workers.

" The difference between the U.S. and most other flourishing nations of the Western World--such as France, U.K.--is that out there, the government fears the people whereas here, the people fear the government. THAT is why this nation is crumbling and it is stupid to blame our dying economy on NAFTA and Clinton. Who is fighting for our right to FREEDOM (from gov't and big business control)and the persuit of happiness? The same A-holes who believe that the poor do not have the "right" to have a family and raise children even though they work their lives away for some fat-cats' profit and suffer without healthcare are the same people responsible for the deterioration of their friends and neighbors in their community--it is coming people. And no mk, fear is NOT a GOOD thing. it is the footbath of the SLAVE. And most of us are well on our way. "

" It is good to live with a small sense of fear, it keeps you grounded, it keeps you thinking realistically, and most importantly it keeps you safe. When you live with your head in the clouds, thinking that the world around us will be all lovy-dovy once we pull out of Iraq, thats when bad things can and will happen. "

" Teiresias-I am offended. Is their any need to call me an idiot. I will say that people are niave to believe that our country is immune to attack from other countries. Have you not study history at all. Not a one single nation or govenment has stood the test of time. What makes this country any different? "

" Well said Retrosanity Clinton's success came as a result of other people's hard work. Dot coms and the housing boom had nothing to do with him. Under his administation nothing was done to control lenders who offered money next to anybody willing to get it, credit card interest rates skyrocketed and people began to realize they couldn't afford to pay their bills. "

Teiresias wrote on Feb 8, 2008 9:10 AM:

" Yes, Clinton got NAFTA passed, and Bush wants more of the same to cover the entire hemisphere.

But listen up all you "free traders" out there--this is EXACTLY what was expected. Capital will flow to the place that has the cheapest labor. That is why Mal*Wart is so popular.

And a side note to MK: Quit being an idiot. Its not like there are huge standing armies of terrrrrrists waiting to storm our borders. Quit living in fear--it clouds your judgement. "

" PicklesPlease-Because of the actions taken by our current president have we had another September 11th? The answer is no. I would rather have trained soldiers fighting them over there then here on our soil. National security has to be our number one concern as well as putting an end to unfair free trade agreements that send our nations jobs elsewhere. And Yes Bill Clinton was the president that enacted many of these "Great" policies. "

" Continued: Both bubbles burst as all bubbles eventually do. Things were already going in the toilet a year before he left office. BTW because of my hard work, dedication and thinking for myself my income and personal worth has increased 200% over the last 8 years. Why? Because I didn't wait for a handout I went out and made my own luck. No I'm not an executive I'm a normal joe like everyone else I just go out and get what I need instead of waiting for someone to give it to me. "

returntosanity wrote on Feb 8, 2008 9:00 AM:

" Pickles,
You are the one who is stupid and needs to do research. You obviously know nothing about the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) signed by your buddy Bubba Clinton. This agreement allows for companies to move their pocessing to foreign countries with no penalties and infact pays them to do it. Further no longer are their capital gains taxes imposed on the profits made on good made in foreign countries that were once made here. Your buddy presided over the dot com boom and the housing boom. Neither of these were of his makeing thats just being in the right place at the right time. "

mk wrote on Feb 8, 2008 8:57 AM:

" Its amazing how brainwashed so many people are in this country. They think Bill Clinton was the world's savior. The economy did well under his adminstration because access to money was unprecedented. People could sign up for as many credit cards as they wished, and borrow as much money from banks as they wanted no matter how good or bad their credit was. I have done my research under Clinton the military was cut beyond measure leaving our country vulnerable to attack, and all sense of morality was pushed aside (What does is mean?). "

" mk, that is a stupid comment. When Clinton was in office, our country was doing fabulous! He evn reduced our deficit and business was booming! Our economy would be just fine if it wasn't for Bush's "little vietnam" ploy going on RIGHT NOW that is killing both our neighbors AND our economy. Blaming Clinton is a laaaaaaaaaaame cop out. Do some research please. "

" We can thank the Clinton Administration for the max-exodus of American companies and their jobs to third world countries like Mexico. For all of you who thought free trade agreements (NAFTA,etc.) were the next best thing following the invention of sliced bread, take a close now at their affects. We have a declining economy, and ever increasing prices on products made in Mexico or China. "

ollie wrote on Feb 8, 2008 8:06 AM:
