Norma Lillian (Hoff) Miedema
HOLMEN, Wis. — Norma Lillian (Hoff) Miedema, 85, of Holmen died Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, at Onalaska (Wis.) Care Center. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Halfway Creek Lutheran Church, with burial in Long Coulee Cemetery, both in rural Holmen. Family and friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, Holmen, and from 9 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday at the church. Donald E. Anderson
BARNES, Wis. — Donald E. Anderson, 76, of Barnes died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008, at St. Francis in the Park Health Care Center, Superior, Wis., after a long illness.
He was born July 2, 1931, in Two Harbors, Minn., to Evar and Adeline (Nelson) Anderson. He married Darlene Dosdall on March 8, 1952, in Morris, Minn. Don was a manufacturing engineer for Trane Co. in La Crosse for 34 years before retiring in 1994 and moving to Barnes. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening and was considered an all-around handyman.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene; one son, Dale (Rita) Anderson of La Crosse; four grandchildren, Sarah, Scott, Nina and Jesse; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Renee’ Berkman; a son, David Anderson; and a grandson, Henry Lee.
In keeping with Don’s wishes, his body will be cremated, and there will be no services.

Mary Lois Berg
BLAIR, Wis. — Mary Lois Berg, 84, of Blair died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008, at Tri-County Memorial Nursing Home, Whitehall, Wis.
Lois was born June 2, 1923, in French Creek to George and Anna (Halvorson) Tidquist. Lois was baptized and confirmed in French Creek Lutheran Church.
Lois married Richard E. Berg on June 14, 1941, in French Creek Lutheran Church. Together, they farmed in Lakes Coulee prior to their retirement in 1989 when they moved to Blair. Richard preceded Lois in death Feb. 1, 1997.
Lois will be greatly remembered for her wonderful sense of humor. She enjoyed bowling and going up north fishing with friends. Lois never went out the door without her red lipstick.
She was the best mother and grandmother in the world.
Lois is survived by four children, Patsy (Gary) Armitage of Blair, Annette (Larry) Stegall of Rockford, Ill., Lindy (Robert) Plumer of Durand, Wis., and Julie (James) Pogreba of New Rockford, N.D.; a daughter-in-law, Tracy Berg of Blair; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a sister, Carol Berg of Blair; a brother, Gary Tidquist of Wyoming; and a special friend, Lois Klavestad.
In addition to her parents and husband, Lois was preceded in death by two sons, Roger and Douglas; a daughter, Mary Jane Christianson; five brothers, Ardel, Glen, Phillip, Vernon and Douglas; two sisters, Marlys Amundson and Sandra Ronson; and a grandson, Troy Berg.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 11, at First Lutheran Church, with burial in Rest Haven Cemetery, both in Blair. Pastor Mark Kvale will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, at Jack Funeral Home, Blair, and from 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the church.
Memorials may be designated to First Lutheran Church in Blair.
Carol Rae Berger
WESTBY, Wis. — Carol Rae Berger, 68, of Westby died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008, at Norseland Nursing Home, Westby, surrounded by her family.
She was born May 24, 1939, to Raynice and Doris (Nedland) Johnson. She grew up on a farm near West Prairie, Vernon County, Wis., and later moved to Viroqua, Wis. On Nov. 15, 1958, she was united in marriage to Carlyle Berger.
Carol had worked at Westby Creamery for several years and also cleaned for several businesses in Westby. She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Westby and the WELCA.
She is survived by her children, Calvin (Peggy) Berger, Randy Berger and special friend Amanda, and Chad Berger and special friend Kathy, all of Westby; her sisters, who she raised as daughters, Shirley (James) Fremstad of Westby, and Sherri (Richard) Weber of Lancaster, Wis.; grandchildren, Jayme, Nicolas and Kaitlin Berger, Nichole Weber, Jessica Fremstad, Teresa (Jon) Olson, Justin (Amy) Mashak and Erik Mashak and special friend Kristina; great-grandchildren, Ethan, Alex and Sadie; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carlyle, on March 7, 2003; an infant son, Barry; three brothers, Wyman, Ronnie and Gayle Johnson; and one sister, Donna Kansier.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 11, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Westby. Pastor Gary Daines will officiate. Burial will be in Our Saviors Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Vosseteig Funeral Home, 708 S. Hwy. 14, in Westby. Friends may also call from 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the church.

Ruth Mary Fuchsteiner
Ruth Mary Fuchsteiner, 86, of La Crosse died on Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, at Hillview Health Care Center, La Crosse.
She was born on Jan. 13, 1922, in La Crosse to William and Mary (Bogner) Pitz. She married Sylvester Fuchsteiner on Jun 5, 1946, in St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. He preceded her in death in 1967. Ruth loved to cook and bake, and attend all of her grandchildren’s school and sporting events. She will be remembered for her infectious laugh, upbeat personality and smile.
Ruth is survived by two daughters, Mary (Gordon) Nelson of Appleton, Wis., and Susan (Dennis) Hansen of La Crosse; a son, Mark Fuchsteiner of La Crosse; five grandchildren, Jeffrey, Christopher and Timothy Nelson of Phoenix, Jessica Hansen and fiancé’ Joshua Nagel of Auburndale, Wis., and Nathan Van Voorhis of Madison; three sisters, Irene (Gerald) Hoskins of Fridley, Minn., Esther Fransen of La Crosse and Patricia Crowley of La Crosse; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by an infant son, William; her parents; a brother, Raymond Pitz; and two brothers-in-law, Arnold Fransen and Daniel Crowley.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 11 at Roncalli Newman Center, La Crosse. The Rev. Mark Pierce will officiate. Burial will be in Catholic Cemetery, La Crosse. Evelyn M. Geier
Evelyn M. Geier, 88, of La Crosse and formerly of Cashton, Wis., passed away Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, at Bethany St. Joseph Care Center, La Crosse.
Evelyn was born on a farm near Cashton on July 10, 1919, the first child of Anton and Ottilia (Erpenbach) Geier. She attended parochial grade school at St. Peter and Paul’s Parish, Pine Hollow, Wis. After the death of her father in 1927, her mother and children moved to Cashton, where Evelyn completed her elementary education. She attended Cashton High School but left in the middle of her junior year in order to work and help out her widowed mother during the Great Depression of the 1930s.
In 1937, she went to work in Madison as a housekeeper and waitress. In 1941, she moved to Milwaukee, where she worked at various jobs until she suffered injuries in a severe automobile accident in 1948, which necessitated a change in occupations. During 1949-50, she took accounting courses at the technical school in La Crosse. In 1956, she began work as an accountant and office manager at the national office of the American Society for Quality Control, which is located in Milwaukee. She retired in 1984 and moved to La Crosse.
Evelyn married Paul Osuski of Cashton on Aug. 19, 1989, sometime after the death of Paul’s first wife, Delores (Flock) Osuski. Paul died in 1993.
Evelyn loved to play cards, especially 500, cribbage and pinochle, and participated in bingo games. She also liked to try her hand at word puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. Although she had no children of her own, she thoroughly enjoyed playing with the children of others.
Evelyn is survived by the children of Paul and Delores Osuski and their families, Richard (Joyce) Osuski of Cashton, Cheryl (Darrel) Kammel of West Salem, Wis., Donald (Linda) Osuski of Bangor, Wis., and Sue Herricks of La Crosse. She is also survived by her sister, Elvera “Tootie Geier” Camp of La Crosse; her nieces and their families, Ann (Nick) Beliaeff of San Diego, Calif., and Mary (Ernie) Lastra of Morgan Hill, Calif.; and her nephew and his family, William (Marsha) Camp of Glendale, Mo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul Osuski; two brothers, Le Roy and Norbert Geier; her brother-in-law, Thomas Camp; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Mary Mother of the Church (formerly St. Thomas More Catholic Church) in La Crosse. Burial will take place at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Cashton. Family and friends are invited for visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of service Wednesday at the church.

Jean M. Hayek
Jean M. Hayek, 83, of La Crosse passed away Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
She was born April 22, 1924, in La Crosse to John and Olga (Hansen) Meyers. On Nov. 3, 1945, she married George H. “Chut” Hayek in La Crosse. They enjoyed 59 years of marriage before he preceded her in death April 10, 2005.
Jean was a longtime active member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was a past matron of Onalaska Chapter No. 249 OES and La Crosse Chapter No. 22 OES. Jean was very passionate and proud of her art work, which included designing and sculpting porcelain dolls, stained glass and jewelry making. She also enjoyed ceramics and knitting. In recognition of her Norwegian heritage, Jean also enjoyed rosemaling.
Jean is survived by her son, Brian (Debra) Hayek of St. Louis; two granddaughters, Michelle (Brett) Hunt-Johnson of Seattle and Brean (Jared) Hale of St. Louis; seven great-grandchildren, Matthew, Nathan, Aaron, Katherine and Andrew, all of Seattle, and Madison and Marisa, both of
St. Louis; two brothers, Leroy (Mary) Meyers of La Crosse and Jon (Jeanette) Meyers of Phoenix; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, her twin, June Jellings, and Bettie Satek.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 11, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1010 Sill St., La Crosse, with the Rev. Stephan Sandness officiating. A private family burial will be held in Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends and family may call from 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church Endowment Fund or La Crosse Shrine Auxiliary to be used for the Shriner’s Crippled Children’s Hospital and Burn Center. Helen E. Olson
Helen E. Olson, 88, of La Crosse went to be with her Lord on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008.
She was born to James and Agnes (Robinson) Potts on Aug. 28, 1919. She married Albert (Little Sparta) Pokrand, and he preceded her in death. She married John O. Olson, and they lived in the town of Harmony for many years. Helen worked at Electric Auto-lite, Viroqua Tobacco Co., the nursing home in Viroqua, as well as her many years of farming.
Helen cherished her family, especially her only child, Ruth Loging.
Before she lost her eyesight, she loved to read her mysteries and do her crocheting. She also loved her slot machines. Helen’s favorite pastime was going out to eat with her friends and family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Ruth Loging of La Crosse; granddaughters, Tammy Johnson of La Crosse and Sheri (Steven) Craig of West Salem, Wis.; great-grandchildren, Scott and Sierra Craig, both of West Salem; and a sister, Bernice Duncan of La Crosse.
Helen was preceded in death by her husbands; a son-in-law, Melvin Loging; and a grandson, Terry Loging.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 809 Gillette St., La Crosse. The Rev. Scott Skogen will officiate, and burial will be in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park, La Crosse. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until the time of services Monday.
