Eugene A. Janzen
SPARTA, Wis. — Eugene A. Janzen, 66, of Sparta died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare in Sparta.

He was born Feb. 26, 1941, in Cashton, Wis., to Raymond and Mary (Brueggen) Janzen. He went to St. Peter and Paul School in Pine Hollow and graduated from Cashton High School.

Eugene joined the U.S. Air Force on July 9, 1959. He was in the Air Police and then in Security Service. He served in Taiwan for 14 months. He was honorably discharged in July 1963.

He married Judine Lou Schultenover in November 1963, Gene and Judy later divorced. He married Janice Raymer in December 1990.

He is survived by his wife, Janice of Sparta; his four children, Sheryl Kortbein, grandchildren, Zachary, Kylie and Ben; Russell (Tina) Janzen, grandchildren, Jessica and Nathan; Darrell (Krista) Janzen, grandchildren, Alexandria, Emma and Isaac; Lana Walker, grandchildren, Mia and Ceara; stepchildren, Roxanna (William) St. John, grandchildren, Troy, Jamie and Chad Donskey; Kevin (Marlene) Raymer, grandchild, Jenna; Bruce (Jane) Raymer, grandchildren, Andrew and Jason; Patricia (Royce) Newman, grandchildren, Josh and Brandy; Suzanne Davis, grandchildren, Kaylin and Abbey; 13 stepgreat-grandchildren; two brothers, Donald (Florence) Janzen and Norman (Donna) Janzen; three sisters, Mary Ann Fuerstenberg, Elaine (Darrell) Pederson and Norma (Albert) Spaeth; sister-in-law, Dorothy Janzen; several nieces and nephews; and aunt and uncle, Art and Marion Janzen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Mary; brother, Arnold Janzen; nephew, Jeffrey Janzen; and great-grandson, Jacob Donskey.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Sparta, with Father James Leary O.F.M. Cap. officiating. Burial with full military honors provided by VFW Post 8584 will be in Pine Hollow Cemetery, Cashton, Wis. Friends may call at Lanham-Miller Funeral Home, Sparta, on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m., with a 7:45 p.m. rosary, and at the funeral home on Wednesday from 8 to 10:45 a.m.

Ambrose J. Goyette Jr.

Ambrose J. Goyette Jr., also known as “A.J.” and “Bud,” 65, of La Crosse passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008.

He was born May 19, 1942, in La Crosse to Ambrose and Ellen (Culvert) Goyette Sr. A.J. attended Logan High School and graduated in 1961. He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad as a brakeman. He married Jeanette Schultz on June 22, 1963, in La Crosse. He was a great family man, enjoying barbecuing for his family, camping, playing golf, fishing and playing the drums.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanette of La Crosse; one son, Randy (Patti) Goyette and their son Travis of La Crosse; one daughter, Karen Goyette and her special friend Rick of Aurora, Ill.; one sister, Geraldine Lusk of Coon Valley, Wis.; and five brothers, Harold (Mary) of Onalaska, Wis., Gene of La Crosse, Oldy of Melrose, Wis., Gordon (Shirley) of La Crosse and Raymond of California. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, George, Jerry and Fritz.

There will be no visitation. Private family services will be held at Mormon Coulee Memorial Park Cemetery.

Vernon J. Geier

SPARTA, Wis. — Vernon J. Geier, 76, of Sparta died Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, at Morrow Memorial Home in Sparta.

He was born Feb. 24, 1931, in Pine Hollow in the town of Jefferson, Monroe County, Wis., to William and Applonia (Schreier) Geier. He grew up in the Cashton, Wis., area and married Carol Jean Bahr in May 1956. They were later divorced. He farmed in the Cashton area for many years.

Vernon moved to Sparta in 1986. He worked at Sparta Manufacturing and as a school crossing guard. He moved to the Morrow Memorial Home in August 2003.

He is survived by his children, Thomas (Carlene) Geier of Coon Valley, Wis., Barbara Geier of Sparta, Michael (Pam) Geier of Viroqua, Wis., and David (Sandi) Geier of Marinette, Wis.; grandchildren, Brian, Renae, Rudy (Laurie), Valerie (Brandy), Nancy, Lucas (Angie), Travis (Julie), Amanda, Josh and Jessalyn; great-grandchildren, Dallas, Dakota Jayden, Klayten, Alexis and Abbigale; two brothers, Leonard Geier of La Crosse and Clarence (Janice) Geier of La Crosse, Wis.; and five sisters, Margaret Prestwood of La Crosse, Marie Gabel of La Crosse, Darlene Paulson of Cashton, Lavina Flock of Cashton and Elrita (Clarence) Meyers of Bangor, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lawrence Geier, infant Robert Geier; sisters, Emma Luedke, Eleanor Crook and Rosella Oswald; and a special friend, LeRoy Pfaff.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Sparta, with Father James Leary O.F.M. Cap. officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery.

Arden L. Berg

ONTARIO, Wis. — Arden L. Berg, 84, of rural Ontario went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday evening, Feb. 10, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.

He was born Nov. 26, 1923, in Ontario to Oden and Nelda (Johnson) Berg. Arden married Ruby Nelson on Aug. 4, 1944, in Decorah, Iowa. The couple farmed as a “team” their married life in the Ontario area.

Arden enjoyed visiting with people and getting to know the many children and families in the 26 years of driving bus for Norwalk-Ontario-Wilton schools.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby; two sons, Larry (Diane) Berg of Sparta, Wis., and James (Kathy) Berg of Janesville, Wis.; one daughter, Connie (Dave) Olson of Onalaska, Wis.; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mildred Witt of Tomah, Wis.; four sisters-in-law, Jeanette Berg of Tomah, Wis., Hazel Neprud of Cashton, Wis., Ruth Olson of Ontario and Mae Nelson of Westby, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; two brothers, Lawrence and Donnie Berg; two sisters, Nora Clark and Norma Silbaugh; and a great-granddaughter, Teresa Marie.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, at Bethesda Lutheran Brethren Church, 212 W. Park St., Westby, Wis. Pastor Lindell Quam will officiate, with burial in Hilltop Rest Cemetery in Ontario. Friends may call at Bethesda Church on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. and also at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

Norma E. Weverstad

HOLMEN, Wis. — Norma E. Weverstad, 77, of Holmen died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008, at Mulder Health Care Facility in West Salem, Wis.

She was born Aug. 3, 1930, in the town of Farmington, La Crosse County, to Norman and Minnie (Johnson) Dahl. Norma was a 1948 graduate of Bangor (Wis.) High School. On Sept. 29, 1948, she married Glenn Severson at Bells Coulee Lutheran Church, and he preceded her in death July 8, 1961. On April 4, 1964, Norma married Clarence Weverstad at Holmen Lutheran Church, and he preceded her in death March 14, 1995. In addition to farming in the Holmen area with her husband Clarence, Norma worked as a cook for the Holmen School District for five years. She was a member of Halfway Creek Lutheran Church and the church WELCA. Also at church, she was a Sunday school teacher, participated in quilting and assisted with several lutefisk suppers. Family life was very important to Norma, and she prided herself on keeping them close.

Survivors include five children, Larry (Inez) Severson of Holmen, Penny (Gary) Snyder of Onalaska, Wis., Tim (Mary) Severson of Holmen, Julie Hanson of Mindoro, Wis., and Mark (Dawn) Weverstad of Rochester, Minn.; one son-in-law, Dick (Mary) Day of Prairie du Chien, Wis.; 16 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one brother, Lester (Darlene) Dahl of Burlington, Wis.; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Iva DeYoung of West Salem, Jesse (Art) Berg of Chaseburg, Wis., Marion Severson of West Salem, Thelma Severson of Holmen, Charles (Shirley) Severson of Mindoro, Arlene Dasse of San Diego, Leona Gran of Pequot Lakes, Minn., Doris Watson of Houston, Texas, and Inez (Max) Brunnemann of San Antonio, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her first and second husbands, Norma was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Jean Day; one brother, Raymond Dahl; and two sisters, Violet Sheets and Delores Parmenter.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, at Halfway Creek Lutheran Church, W. 6016 Hwy. W., Holmen. Pastor Jean Pagliaro will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at Jostad-Jandt Funeral Home, 121 N. Youlon St., West Salem, on Wednesday from 5 until 8 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until time of services.

Peter Robert Raith

WEST SALEM/BRISTOL, Wis. — Peter Robert Raith, 79, of West Salem and formerly of Bristol passed away Saturday Feb. 9, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center in La Crosse.

He was born April 16, 1928, in Milwaukee, the son of the late Wolfgang and Anna (Deutsche) Raith. He moved from Lake Shangri-La, Bristol, to West Salem in 1986. Peter was a member of St. Leo the Great Church in West Salem and a former member of St. Scholastica Church in Bristol and a 3rd Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus Council 9438. Peter was a proud member of UAW Local 72 in Kenosha, Wis., and was a retired union steward at American Motors and Chrysler in Kenosha. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of the VFW. Peter loved to play his accordion and with his band; Peter Raith and the Twiliters, played in Milwaukee, Chicago, La Crosse and many others places. He married Helen Gudjonis on April 8, 1967, and she traveled with him as he played his music. She preceded him in death on Dec. 7, 2007.

Survivors include a son, Lawrence (Marla) Raith of Kenosha Wis.; stepsons, Bruce (Linda) Gudjonis of Twin Lakes, Wis., Joseph Gudjonis of Trevor, Wis., and Nels (Yvonne) Carlson; a daughter, Cathy (Matt) Madsen of Waterford, Wis.; a stepdaughter, Lynne Casteel; a brother, Joseph Raith of Kalamazoo, Mich.; four grandchildren, Brandy Cherie (Derrick) Dovenberg, Peter (Misty) Raith, Denelle Raith and Logan Madsen; and three great-grandchildren, Damien, Madeline and Peter II. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Raith.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at St. Scholastica Church, 18700 116th St., Bristol, with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

Hermann F. Lindner

Hermann F. Lindner, 97, of La Crosse died in his home on Friday, Feb. 8, 2008.

He was born Oct. 19, 1910, in Germany to Fredrich and Louise (Melzer) Lindner. Hermann was a retired shipping clerk from Machine Products.

He is survived by his wife, Elfrieda (Ohm).

He had four siblings, all of Germany.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 1425 Jackson St., La Crosse. The Rev. Roger Sachs will officiate, and burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 12:30 p.m. until services.

Catherine E. Norton

WAUKON, Iowa — Catherine E. Norton, 90, of Waukon died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery, both in Waukon. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today, with a 4 p.m. Scripture service, at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Gary M. Kennedy Sr.

Gary M. Kennedy Sr., 58, of La Crosse died Monday Feb. 11, 2008, at his home after a courageous battle with emphysema.

He was born June 15, 1949, in La Crosse to Leslie and Dorothy (Vian) Kennedy. He attended Central High School and then enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in Vietnam and retired after 20 years. Throughout his illness, he had high spirits about life. He enjoyed the Dallas Cowboys, coin collecting, watching eagles on the river and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his mother, Dorothy Kennedy of La Crosse; one son, Gary Jr. (Jean) and their son, Wyatt, of La Crosse; one daughter, Nicole Berg and her children, Brandi, Summer, Jacob and Allexis of Galesville, Wis.; two brothers, David Kennedy of Rochester, Minn., and Bob (Linda) Kennedy of Dallas; and two sisters, Cindy (Gary) Neumeister of La Crescent, Minn., and Wanda (John) Van Lin of Stevens Point, Wis. He was preceded in death by his father, Leslie; and one sister, Judy Blank.

Family and friends may call from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Fossum Funeral Home of Onalaska, Wis. Graveside services will follow at Mormon Coulee Memorial Park Cemetery.

Many thanks to the hospice staff and other friends of the family who helped during Gary’s illness. You made him so happy, and he enjoyed your company.

WESTBY, Wis. — Doris H. Rudrud, 85, of Westby died Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, at Bethel Home in Viroqua, Wis. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Coon Prairie Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Vosseteig Funeral Home in Westby and from noon to services Thursday at the church.
