LA CROSSE/NEILLSVILLE, Wis. Ann M. Austin, 94, of La Crosse and formerly of Neillsville, died Feb. 16, 2008, at Bethany Riverside in La Crosse.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Neillsville. The Rev. Woodrow Pace will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Brodhead, Wis. Visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

She was born June 8, 1913, in Caltrano, Italy, the daughter of Mary and Valentino Dall’Olio. Before marriage, she worked in the garment industry in Rockford, Ill. On Nov. 8, 1947, she married Merle Austin in Rockford. After marriage, the couple farmed in Illinois and Wisconsin. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Neillsville.
Survivors include one son, David (Jane) Austin, of Marshfield, Wis.; one daughter, Mary Fitzpatrick of La Crosse; eight grandchildren, Kimberly Austin, Sarah (Kevin) Gadke, Kathleen Fitzpatrick (fiance Callan Hackstaff), Heather, Molly, Amy, Daniel and Kelly Fitzpatrick; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Bridget Gadke; one sister, Theresa Cascio of Rockford, Ill.; and nieces and nephews, Judith Gilmore, Margaret Anderson, Nicholas Cascio Jr. and Jerome Cascio.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Merle, in 1984; her parents; an infant granddaughter, Ann Fitzpatrick; her brothers, Robert and Paul Dall’Olio; sister-in-law, Lydia Dall’Olio; and brother-in-law, Nicholas Cascio Sr.

LA CRESCENT, Minn. Steven P. Blank, 52, of La Crescent died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center in La Crosse.
He was born Nov. 16, 1955, in La Crosse to Darwin and Tresa (Dagendesh) Blank. He married Ellen Amsrud on May 6, 1978, in La Crescent. Steven worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad for over 30 years. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed archery, fishing, hunting and rendezvousing. He was president of the PrairienLa Crosse Long Rifles. Steven also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen; two daughters, Jennifer Blank of La Crosse and Alyssa Blank of La Crescent; two sons, Ryan Blank of La Crescent and Tyler Blank of La Crosse; four grandchildren, Nichole, Zachary, Madison and Brianna; his parents, Darwin and Tresa Blank of La Crosse; one sister, Kelly (Jeffrey) Schultz of La Crosse; his mother- and father-in-law, Morris and Ardith Amsrud of La Crescent; a sister-in-law, Julie Peterson of Holmen, Wis.; two brothers-in-law, Gary Amsrud of La Crescent and Kevin (Patti) Amsrud of Dillsburg, Pa.; along with five nieces and five nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, David Blank, and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Barbara Holly’ (Hallingstad) Boone
DE PERE, Wis. Barbara “Holly” (Hallingstad) Boone, 73, of De Pere went home to be with the Lord late Friday evening, Feb. 15, 2008, at a Green Bay hospital.
Born Nov. 28, 1934, in Augusta, Wis., she was the daughter of the late Milan and Viva (Craker) Hallingstad. Barb is a graduate of Viroqua (Wis.) High School. She married Burl W. Boone in August 1955 in Green Bay, and he preceded her in death May 21, 2003. Barb was employed with Integrated Community Service in Green Bay for 16 years retiring as an administrative assistant. She was a member and volunteer of the Moose Lodge in Green Bay. Barb enjoyed fishing, the ocean, making and distributing Christmas ornaments, traveling and her many cats that have been a part of her life over the years.
She is survived by five children and their spouses, Laurie Clark and Bruce Hahn of Virginia Beach, Va., Burl and JoAnn Boone Jr. of Green Bay, Richard Boone and Jean Colbjornsen of Prescott, Wis., Janet and Eric Ruechel of De Pere, Kim and Dale Smith of Suamico, Wis.; eight grandchildren, Sarah (Jim) Rogstad, Samara (Jeff) Postuma, Adrianne Tilkens, Michael Boone, Andrew (Kristine) Boone, Alyssa Boone, Samantha Ostrowski and Nathaniel Ruechel; eight great-grandchildren; one son-in-law, Michael Tilkens of Columbia Heights, Minn.; one sister, Judith Thompson of La Crosse; a niece; two nephews; and many cousins.
She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Nanette L. Tilkens; and one granddaughter, Melissa Dotterer.
Visitation will be at Malcore (East) Funeral Home, 701 N. University Ave., Green Bay, on Wednesday from 4 p.m. until time of services. Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial to follow this spring in Viroqua, Wis.

Max D. Downing
ONTARIO, Wis. Max D. Downing, 88, of Ontario died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, at his home in Ontario. He was born April 6, 1919, in Ontario to George and Daisy (Lamb) Downing.
Max served four years in the armed forces during World War II. In that time, he was awarded a Bronze Star, European and African Campaign, American Campaign and a Freedom Metal.
Max was united in marriage to Helen Mae Hutchens on June 29, 1946. Max then worked different jobs before settling his family in Illinois and taking a job as a welder with Caterpillar Corp. until his retirement.
Max was always ready for a good game of cards. Nothing made him happier than taking out the motor home and traveling with his friends and family. He was proud of the fact that he had been through all 50 states, Canada and Mexico. He traveled into December 2007.
He is survived by his wife, Helen of Ontario; his children, Diana Ryburn of DeKalb, Ill., Vicki (Rusty) Baie of Hinckley, Ill., and Constance Elting of Pocahontas, Ill,; one sister, Dorothy (Lurl) Mossholder of Bloomingdale; two brothers, Roy Downing of Blue Mound, Wis., and John (Joyce) Downing of Norwalk, Wis.; brother-in-laws, Leland Melby of Viroqua, Wis., and Otis Hutchens; sisters-in-law, LeDale (Allan) Bair and Sandra (Gary) Williams of Viroqua; 11 grandchildren;
13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He will be missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Ronald C. Downing; one granddaughter, Kristi Adell Bastian; one son-in-law, Bernie Elting; five brothers, Ray Downing, Clyde Downing, Herbert Downing, Kenneth Downing and George Downing; one sister, Glida Melby; and one brother-in-law, Harold Hutchens.

Philip Arthur Dyer
Philip Arthur Dyer, 97, of La Crosse died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, at Hillview Health Care Center in La Crosse. Many readers of the La Crosse Tribune knew Phil through his writings as “Uncle Charlie.”
Phil was born in Caledonia, Minn., on Sept. 17, 1910, to Arthur and Jessamine (Eleas) Dyer, and was raised in Houston, Minn. He graduated from Houston High School and received his college degree from La Crosse Normal School in 1931. On Sept. 18, 1933, Phil married Mary Jane Waterman in La Crosse. She preceded him in death on Sept. 18, 1980.
Phil worked for several years as a manager of various local movie theaters, including The Strand and The Riviera. He then served as the sales manager at WKTY for 25 years up until retirement in 1982. Phil was active for many years in politics, including the campaigns of Milo Knutson and Ronald Reagan, and was considered to be quite the political pundit. He was a lifelong avid fan of local sports teams as well as the Packers, Brewers and Badgers.
He is survived by two daughters, Susan Dyer of New York, N.Y., and Patricia Dyer (David Johnson) of Evanston, Ill.; one son, Darrel (Shelly) Dyer of Portland, Ore.; six grandchildren, Scott (Shelly) Miller, Paul (Kathy) Miller, Valerie (Todd) Altpeter, Kristin (Jeff) Darien, Erika Schneidewind, and Bridgette Dyer-Leighton; nine great-grandchildren, Amanda and Emily Miller, William and Grant Miller, Katie, Elizabeth, and Jenna Altpeter, Matthew Darien and Sophie Dyer-Leighton; three nieces, Elizabeth Supernaw, Ann (Richard) Olson and Jan (Jerry) Staebell; one nephew, Keith (Dorothy) Sime; his long-time friend and companion, Orvella Flaten, of La Crosse; and very special friends, Steve and Marian Pavela of La Crosse. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, June Sime.
A memorial gathering for family and friends will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse. Burial will take place in Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Salvation Army.

HOLMEN, Wis. Lorayne Holter, 80, of Holmen died at the Onalaska Care Center on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008.
She was born in Viola, Wis., on Nov. 7, 1927, to William and Mary (Griffin) Chester. She married Sylvan Holter on May 11, 1947, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 4, 1998.
Lorayne is survived by a daughter, Sheila (Joe) Bissen of Madison; three sons, David (Marjorie) Holter of Albuquerque, N.M., Michael Holter of Wolf Point, Mont., and Timothy (Ardie) Holter of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Bonnie Cook of Holmen and Sharon Ellis of Kenosha, Wis.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Holmen Lutheran Church. The Revs. Glenn Borreson and Dan Henderson will officiate, and burial will be in Onalaska (Wis.) Cemetery. Joyce J. Klimek
Joyce J. Klimek, 64, of La Crosse passed away Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, at Lakeview Health Center in West Salem, Wis.
She was born May 16, 1943, in La Crosse to Theodore and Edna (Cook) Jacobs. Joyce was a member of the Happy Go Lucky Club for the disabled, and for many years she enjoyed going to the mall and on trips with friends she had made. The last few years, she resided at Lakeview Health Center, making new friends who took wonderful care of her. Joyce left this world wanting only to go home to be with her mom and dad.
Survivors include one sister, Darlene (Doug) Harper of Onalaska, Wis.; two nieces, Laura Randell of Onalaska and Linda Raper of Memphis, Tenn.; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at Woodruff-Jandt Funeral Home, 4239 Mormon Coulee Road, La Crosse. The Rev. Betsy Miller-Ruben will officiate. Dennis P. Madigan
MILWAUKEE Dennis Madigan of Milwaukee died after a courageous battle with cancer on Feb. 16, 2008, at the age of 69 with his beloved family at his bedside.
He is survived by his loving wife, Cathy Madigan; children, Meagan and Brian (Meghann); grandchildren, Allen and Madelynn; and sister, Linell Shefelbine. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Henrietta Madigan.
Dennis served in the U.S. Army from 1963-1967. He also graduated from the University of Wisconsin with an MS in agricultural journalism and spent his career in the field of corporate public relations. During his retirement, he was an avid seller of antique paper goods on eBay.
He was passionate about all Badger sports and the Milwaukee Brewers, and attended many games. In addition, he loved spending time with his kids and often traveled to Alaska to maintain the family floathouse, to visit his grandson and to fish. For the last five years, he delighted in establishing a vineyard with his son on a small farm in Iowa, where he also like to hunt, hike and listen to the Spring Peepers in the pond. As a gifted and witty writer, he enjoyed chronicling family events.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Thursday, Feb. 21, after 6:30 p.m. at the home of Robert and Beverly Meyeroff, 6811 N. Reynard Road, Fox Point, Wis.

Joseph H. Mattison
Joseph H. Mattison was born on June 11, 1912, in Highwater township, Cottonwood County, Minn., the son of Nels and Lizzie (Tollefson) Mattison. Joe was confirmed in 1927 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Lamberton, Minn. He received his education in rural and Lamberton schools.
Joe was united in marriage to Effie A. Erickson on Sept. 15, 1934, at the Erik Erickson home. Together they farmed and raised their family in North Hero township, north of Revere, Minn. He also graded roads for North Hero Township for many years. In 1963, they moved to Milwaukee, where Joe worked as a groundskeeper at Wisconsin Memorial Park and at two different heat treating plants. In 1972, they moved back to Lamberton. Joe worked as a janitor at Lamberton High School for several years as well as helping out several area farmers.
Grandpa Joe was a very kind and gentle man with a great love for his family. He had a lifelong love of music which was a great pastime for him in his later years.
Joe died on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008, at Hillview Health Care Center in La Crosse.
He is survived by his children, Richard (Joyce) Mattison of St. Cloud, Minn., Raymond (Janice) of Holmen, Wis., Marvin (Sharon) Mattison of La Crosse, Loretta (Donald) Dobert of Germantown, Wis., and LeAnn (Michael) Lagerman of Greenfield, Wis.; son-in-law, Bernard (Mary Lou) Gorres of Maple Grove, Minn.; 20 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren; and brothers-in-law, Arthur Erickson of Lamberton, Minn., and Willard Erickson of St. Helens, Ore.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Effie, in 1988; two daughters, Evelyn and Darlene Gorres; two grandsons, Michael Gorres and Douglas Mattison; his brothers, Noah, Minnerd, Harry, Arthur and Leslie; his sisters, Myrtle Derickson, Anna, Laura Anderson, Ella Johnson, Esther Jeckell and Mary Gustad; and many other brothers- and sisters-in-law.

Gilman Gillie’ W. Meyer
NEW ALBIN, Iowa Gilman “Gillie” W. Meyer, 78, of New Albin died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, at Thornton Manor in Lansing, Iowa.
He was born April 29, 1929, in Jefferson township, Houston County, Minn., to Walter F. and Hulda (Meiners) Meyer. On Aug. 25, 1951, Gillie married Joan Hilkemeier at First Congregational Church in Redfield, S.D. Gilman farmed on his home farm in Jefferson township until 1968, when he sold the farm and moved his family to New Albin. He then worked for Great Plains Supply Co. in New Albin until he retired in 1986. During his years living in Minnesota, Gillie served as Jefferson Township Clerk and on the Eitzen Creamery Board. In New Albin, he was a member of St. Peter’s Church, where he served several terms on the church council and as church custodian. He also served on the New Albin City Council and the volunteer fire department.
Survivors include his wife, Joan of New Albin; four children, Alan (Kathleen) Meyer of Holmen, Wis., Debra (David) Anderson of Rochester, Minn., Wayne (Jane) Meyer of New Albin, and Clark (Christine) Meyer of Caledonia, Minn.; eight grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; one sister, Phyllis (Walt) Breeser of New Albin; one brother, L. Kenneth Meyer of Bloomington, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gilman was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Warren Meyer; one sister, Melba (John) Beneke; one sister-in-law, Leanna Meyer; and one nephew, Steven Breeser.

SPARTA, Wis. Gerald W. Stark, 81, of Sparta died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare in Sparta.
He was born Oct. 23, 1926, to Willard and Blanche (Rooker) Stark. He grew up on a farm in the Sparta area. He attended Sparta High School.
On June 16, 1949, he was united in marriage to Arlys I. Livangood at St. Patrick’s Parsonage in Sparta. After marriage, they farmed. In 1965, they purchased a farm in Brackett Valley. He retired from farming and moved to Sparta.
He is survived by his wife, Arlys of Sparta; his children, Stephen (Dona Mitchell) Stark of Sparta and The Villages, Fla., Cheryl Hamilton of Fitchberg, Wis., Susan (Wayne) Whitehead of Cashton, Wis., Kathleen (Thomas) Francois of Sun Prairie, Wis., and Christine (Steven) Steinke of Janesville, Wis.; eight grandchildren; a sister, Ethel Pettis of Yakima, Wash.; several nieces and nephews; four stepgrandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren.

James D. Wais
James D. Wais, 85 of La Crosse died Monday, Feb. 18, 2008, at St. Joseph Rehabilita-tion Center in La Crosse.
He was born in La Crosse on Nov. 12, 1922, to Pete and Alta (Nagle) Wais. He married Helen Nowak at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in La Crosse on April 17, 1948. Jim served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked at the Allis Chalmers plant in La Crosse until its closing. Later he worked as a controller for the La Crosse School District until his retirement. Following his retirement, he was instrumental in helping his son start up the AVS Group of La Crosse. Jim loved competing in sports, especially golf, horseshoes and bowling. He was the first bowler to roll an 800 series during the Wisconsin State Bowling Tournament.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Pete Wais, Kathy Marth, John Wais, Ed Wais, Theresa Schmidt and Mike Wais; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in La Crosse. The Rev. Lawrence B. Berger will officiate. Burial will follow at Catholic Cemetery in La Crosse. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
