La Crosse rapper RIO preaches salvation through hip-hop

.
Mario Street’s life is filled with missteps, but he’s doing his best to turn his mistakes into lessons for others who don’t share his Christian faith.

He was in a street gang in his native Chicago. He was shot. He sold drugs, then started using them.
He got in trouble with the law and ended up in prison.

All the while, he was making music. But today the 29-year-old La Crosse rapper, who performs as RIO, uses his music to spread the word of how the Lord got him through.

“I been through a lot,” he said.

Street will perform Saturday as part of a Black History Month celebration at the Crossfire Youth Center. He also will emcee the event, which features The Groundwork, a Christian-influenced hip-hop group from Milwaukee, a dance demo by La Crosse’s Matt Roberts, and dance and poetry competitions.

The goal is to focus on hip-hop and rap that isn’t about drugs, sex and misogyny, said event organizer Andrew Smalley. “It’s about creating a positive aura,” he said. “More about the creative spirit.”

For Street, the path to positivity wasn’t straight or easy. He had faith, but the devil, it seemed, lurked around every corner.

There were epiphanies. One came in 2005, while Street was in prison for selling marijuana. He said he was talking to another prisoner whose faith was weak. Street knew the man had been shot, and he used his own experience as a way in. In the end, he said, both were in tears.

“I can’t even tell you everything I said, because it wasn’t me,” he said. “The Lord was talking through me.”

Another test came last year.

“When I got out, my faith was strong,” Street said. “I slipped. I started using again.”

He ended up in jail, charged with armed robbery.

“I couldn’t understand it,” he said. “This was honestly something I didn’t do.”

Street was facing 50 years in prison if convicted. He was sweating in the holding cell. And then he started praying, he said, and a peace came over him.

If he pleaded guilty, he could have gotten off with probation, but Street fought the charge. He figured if God meant for him to return to prison, he must have a good reason.

A jury acquitted him in May. He was free, but because his probation officer was gone, he had to spend one more night in jail. That night, he said, five guys told him they wanted to have Bible study.

Street doesn’t try to hide his past. In fact, he uses it in his music.

“I was a king, livin’ the dream, pushin’ amphetamines,” he raps in an autobiographical song. “It’s hard to believe I’m still in existence and free. The Lord saved me to tell my stories through these rhymes and open up eyes to the reasons we survive.”

He wants to bring his performances to schools, to reach out to kids, and anybody else who will listen.

“Any chance I get, I’m going to testify,” he said. “God is good. He’s amazing. He’s for anybody.”

" Just in case anyone else runs across this article in an archive search. I would like to point out that since this article was published, holding up Mr. Street as a shining example of what someone can become, he has been arrested for Operating with a revoked license, Disorderly conduct, criminal damage to property, theft, and burglary. " Cantbelieveit: It doesn't take a crime scene investigator to figure it her identity-if she didn't want people to know her identity, she wouldn't use her first initial, last name and year of birth. KBerger82-I would venture to guess that you do not make more money than I do, but that is irrelevant to this . . . .and it takes MORE than a year or two to "turn your life around" wait 10-15 years then the respectible population will actually believe you have turned your life around. As for Mr. Street, he;s still in the courst system for Gods sake- he hasn't turned anything around in his life yet- nice try. "

" Enjoy life, how do you know her identity and is it your place to post it on here? Just wondering. Also, way to go KBERGER!!!!!!!!!!!! "

" Yes, you are right I have had some run ins with the law as well. But let me tell you that I have a bachelor's degree and support my family without the help of the welfare system. . . . I probably make more money then you. So yes I do defend people who have overcome obstacles because I myself have done so. Just because I made some bad choices, this should be held against me for the rest of my life? Yea, I don't think so. People change!!! On several occasions, I have had to swallow my pride and tell people what I have been convicted of -- I've made my own life hard. I judge myself harder than anyone else, so I don't need input from you or anybody else. "

" It is great to see a person turn their life around such as RIO. It is also great to see him inspiring youngsters to stay away from drugs and crime. However, I do have a problem with the religious aspect of his inspiration. Do we really need people, especially the young and impressionable being told to let God guide their lives at the expense of hard work, dedication, and good choices. If they do work hard, are dedicated, and make good choices, it wasn't God, it was themselves!

Also, why is that God gets all the credit for the turnaround people make, but He never gets criticized for the violence, drug abuse, etc. prior to the turnaround?

"

holmengirl wrote on Feb 22, 2008 10:36 AM:

" I have heard this man's music and it truly is uplifting. We all make mistakes in life, but it takes strength and perseverance to overcome the biggest ones. Change usually doesn't happen in a day; it happens over a lifetime. Way to go RIO, as you grow, you are inspiring others to make changes. Keep it up! "

Diversity wrote on Feb 22, 2008 10:03 AM:

" The Tribune need to print more story that shows postive changes in people like this one. There will always be people who cannot forgive someone for his/her past. There will always be people who will judge a person from an external perspective before they see the internal goods. Not just the La Crosse and surrounding areas, people from all walks of life will have prejudice toward another human being. The sad thing about this, is that people do not know who how to live by the "Golden Rule." "

Diversity wrote on Feb 22, 2008 9:49 AM:

" This is a great story, a story that has a positve message. Rio is an example of how a person can turn his/her life around. This is a story that the oppressor do not like to hear. Rio would be a good role model for any kid who's going down the wrong path. This is a story about redemption. People forget that America is a forgiving country, and Rio is taking advantage of the opportunity to show his forgiveness. This is a story how a person who believed in himself, and not having to convince others that "Change" is possible. Rio story have shown that the haters need love also.. "

" No matter what he has done in the past, this man has serious talent & i've heard his music and he has a lot to say. I own his first cd he got out and i listen to it. He's getting it out to people in a good way and isn't preaching in your face just like everyone else who is trying to make a difference. He is rapping and people are listening, so what if he has a record. Keep your head up Rio!! "

" tribune-about informed citizen i understand freedom of speech but this guy has something rude to say about everyone on every article. why does he have that right? maybe you should reconsider the comment section that for people like him can be destructive to people in the community. just a thought. "

" and who do you think will talk to our children about staying out of trouble? Is it going to be you, which I'm sure from your ignorance is a fat, white, babyboomer that will say one thing to your face one min, and turn around and say another. Soul search yourself before you stop your big fat foot on others trying to change years of bad habits. Support people, instead of knocking them down. You may just find more to life than you nice car/or truck. Wife you don't sleep with or kids you don't read to at night. "

Cantbelieveit wrote on Feb 22, 2008 9:05 AM:

" Rio, dont let any of the people on this site get you down. You know the truth about your life's future. They don't. Some people have nothing better to do than criticize. If you knew there real names you'd realize they are probably felons too. Remember how many horrible things Tookie Smith did and God used him for His good purpose. He'll use you too, just give it over every day without ceasing and don't believe lies about you. God Bless you d m and m too!!!!! "

mby wrote on Feb 22, 2008 9:04 AM:

" To Jackson, JD and Informed, if people are making mistakes in their life are they never allowed to stop making those mistakes? If you have ever worked with the "system" things remain open for months and months. You could be completely paid off and doing good but the case is stil open so the Judge can see that you are sticking to your good behavior. No one changes over night. "

" For those of you who have walked the golden path and had everything handed to you on a platter, sit back and think about what this man has been through. He has made something out of nothing and I am proud of him. So what he has had some run ins with the law, he has payed his consequences and the judge and courts will be the one's who decide his fate in regards to his new charges. Stop being self-righteous, be empathetic. Most of you wouldn't be here today, if you would have walked the path that he has!!! "

" This article talks like his troubles are past tense. This felon still has open cases in the circuit court! Great role model for kids, sounds like he is full of B.S. Next to church, some of the most religious people you will find are in jail. This would have been a nice article too. "

Informed Citizen wrote on Feb 22, 2008 5:23 AM:

" Way to go Tribune, you bought this convict’s song and dance routine about how he has found religion hook line and sinker. I bet you didn’t even bother to do your research and see that in the nine months since being acquitted of the robbery Mr. Street has been arrested for theft, bail jumping, operating while revoked, and resisting an officer. It sounds to me like Mr. Street has just found a fertile recruiting ground for new gang members and is using the Tribune to get his message out. To me just the arrests since his so called “epiphany” make him unacceptable as a role model even if you choose to ignore the 21 arrests previous to it, but the Tribune in the interest of “diversity” holds him up as a shining example of all that is good. "
