Jay Odegaard, La Crosse’s recreation coordinator, told the city’s Board of Park Commissioners on Thursday the event is set for May 3, 2009.
The La Crosse Fitness Festival will feature a marathon, a half-marathon, plus 5k and bike events.
“I think it’s going to be a fantastic event,” said Steve Carlyon, the city’s parks and recreation director. “The support we’re getting — even though it’s still a year and a half out — is enormous.”
The 5k, said Odegaard, will be a fun run/walk, including youth and Special Olympics participants.
Inclusiveness will be a running theme throughout the weekend’s activities, he added.
The event should attract visitors from throughout the region, showcasing La Crosse’s rich scenic beauty — from the bluffs to the river — and physically active community, Carlyon said.
“Hopefully, we have a successful first year and it grows from there,” he said.
Organizers plan to release more information at a press conference March 7.
