Marathon on track for May ’09

.
La Crosse’s first marathon is taking shape for the spring of 2009.

Jay Odegaard, La Crosse’s recreation coordinator, told the city’s Board of Park Commissioners on Thursday the event is set for May 3, 2009.
The La Crosse Fitness Festival will feature a marathon, a half-marathon, plus 5k and bike events.

“I think it’s going to be a fantastic event,” said Steve Carlyon, the city’s parks and recreation director. “The support we’re getting — even though it’s still a year and a half out — is enormous.”

The 5k, said Odegaard, will be a fun run/walk, including youth and Special Olympics participants.

Inclusiveness will be a running theme throughout the weekend’s activities, he added.

The event should attract visitors from throughout the region, showcasing La Crosse’s rich scenic beauty — from the bluffs to the river — and physically active community, Carlyon said.

“Hopefully, we have a successful first year and it grows from there,” he said.

Organizers plan to release more information at a press conference March 7.

" Oh day after,

I hate Sunday Marathons, Saturdays are much better, and if St. Claire's is the day before, doesn't that kind of kill off the half marathon they have planned?

Is this Jay person from here? Seems kind of clueless of local races. "

" Actually it would be the day after St. Clare "

" Yes, how much will they charge to enter this event and who gets the money? If this is the same day as St. Clair half-marathon then this event ought to be rescheduled -- or boycott the City event and pay your feeds to St. Calir's. Personally I think these events are a racket -- you pay money to run on public streets and roads. I can do that for free... "

" This is a great idea, I have always wondered why Lacrosse didn't have a marathon or a bike race. We need anything possible to pull in some tourist dollars. I would also like to see more events that utilize the river, water ski events, boat races, etc. Let's just hope the mayor and his minions don't get involved and screw things up as usual. "

" The better question is how much this event will raise, and where can I help?

Everyone is so selfish these days. "

" Taxpayers deserve to know what this event will cost them ! Right now octoberfest is the biggest police overtime cause as well as other huge street dept expenses! Not to mention the cost of city hall staffers working presently and in the future! "

" Jay is an idiot, doesn't he realize that's the exact same date that the St. Claire's Health Mission Half Marathon is normally held?

I guess he doesn't care about charity, or is this going to be part of that? Then that would be great! "
