Viroqua residents seek help for Iraqi woman hurt in Fort McCoy training exercise

.
VIROQUA, Wis. — A group of Viroqua residents have come to the aid of an Iraqi woman who was injured at Fort McCoy while participating in Army training exercises designed to simulate conditions in Iraq.

Robert Starr, Karen Dahl and Rosemarie Knutson have been helping Nadia Al-Jabouri, who has been living in Viroqua since last fall.
Al-Jabouri was injured in the shoulder when a soldier at Fort McCoy put her arms behind her back during the training exercise, according to the group trying to assist her.

Karen Dahl said she began helping Al-Jabouri in September and has been raising funds to cover rent for Al-Jabouri and her two children.

The Army told Al-Jabouri since she was employed by a contractor for the training exercises, her employer is responsible for any injury, Dahl said. The contractor will not cover her expenses, she said.

Al-Jabouri is scheduled to have a state hearing March 15 on receiving workers’ compensation, Dahl said. If the claim is granted, she likely will get back wages and hopefully some assistance for surgery.

Al-Jabouri’s children now attend Viroqua schools, one at Youth Initiative High School and another in Viroqua Public School.

“They would really like to finish out the school year in Viroqua,” said Dahl.

While Al-Jabouri is an American citizen, she speaks very little English and has a difficult time functioning in the area, Dahl said. She previously lived in Michigan, which has a large Arabic community, and would like to go back in the spring but still will need some assistance, Dahl said, especially if her injury claim is denied.

Al-Jabouri’s rent is several hundred dollars a month, which the group so far has managed to raise, but they do not have enough to cover the March payment. Any additional money raised will go toward helping with expenses for Al-Jabouri’s children, Dahl said.

Want to help?

For information on how to help the Al-Jabouris, call Robert Starr in Viroqua at (608) 637-3177.

" To TRIB READER Thanks for the understanding,I have no minor children. You must be aware that the Wisconsin "Badgercare plan also requires you to have minor children or be pregnant. The problem lies were the adults are the wage earners. THIS WOMAN IS A LEGAL AMERICAN HELPING OUR TROOPS and was on the job. The only outlet for people with no insurance and no minor children is SAINT CLARES in LaCrosse. You must meet income guidelines there too,Thank all those who volunteer for St Clares!! "

" To all you people that say stuff like, "Send her Back" and "Real Hero's" need to get educated.
She is as real a Hero as any American serving this country and maybe more so.
She has come from a country that treats women like dogs and she came here to help train Soliders so they can be better equiped to ensure your way of life and freedom.
She would be labled a traitor by many in her country and surley killed.
And after all that you get on here and kick her like a dog.
Shame on you! "

" To Wizard: Unfortunately, you are fighting the bureacracy because it appears you do NOT have MINOR children in your household. I am well aware that many people applying for disability and medical assistance die waiting for their claim to be processed or approved. But this woman has TWO minor children in her household and no income. Therefore, they SHOULD qualify for medical assistance. My family has already been in your shoes. We've walked that mile! Also, there is a letter circulating asking for $700/month. "

" Seems the author of this semi-sad tale doesn't want us to know how much her rent is. Maybe it is 7, 8, or 9 hundred? "

" These people in Viroqua have lost their minds. I happened to stop at the post office there last two Friday's ago and there were people outside with signs that read "stop murdering Iraqi's" and "U.S. troops are murdering Iraqi's". I personally had a hard time not running them over with my truck. Like someone else said, IF she is a legitimate U.S. citizen, there are plenty of progams to help. I too donate my money to disabled vet funds, for the true hero's. Several hundred for rent in Viroqua and a kid in private school, that is above average, I will tell you that. "

" To: TRIB READER I am a disabled person, it might take up to four years to get Medical Assistance or MA. Hope you get busted up sometime and face the bureacracy. I have been unanable to walk for a year and get nothing from the government other than food stamps and energy assistance which I am grateful for.Hope you break both of your legs so you can put your feet in your mouth. "

" This woman is probably getting state aid, and she is probably much better off financially than many english speaking Americans. Don't aliens have to take a written test to become a legal citizen? Are the tests printed in any chosen language? Maybe she should go back to her home country, they would surely help her pay her rent, buy her food, cloth her children, oh wait a minute, she wouldn't have any rights in her home country or any government help!
I AGREE WITH whimzy, LET'S HELP OUR VETS. "

" This had to have happened last year as new training hasn't started. These Civilian on the Battlefield contractors could care less about the folks they contract as it's a business they just want to get paid. "

" I feel for her to an extent.
However this statement "While Al-Jabouri is an American citizen, she speaks very little English and has a difficult time functioning in the area" gets me. Learn the language.
Also, where are all these groups wishing to help when it's a Caucasian, English speaking, individual needing help?
I'd prefer to give my money to Disabled Veterans of the Armed Services, who also are in need and many seem to forget. "

" Whiskerflickins, please check your glasses. The article says "several hundred", not seven hundred dollars for rent! And people wonder how rumors get started...... "

TribReader wrote on Feb 24, 2008 2:36 AM:

" Strange, this woman was living in a neighboring county last October and had been there for months. How did she end up in Viroqua? She was employed by a contractor at Ft McCoy as a "civililan on the battlefield" or COB. Most of those people were contracted or basically self employed. As an American citizen she could be qualified for food stamps and medical assistance and maybe even W2 (replaced welfare). W2 assistance would almost pay her rent. If eligible for workman's comp, they would pay for her surgery, not just part. Doesn't this woman have any friends left back in the Arabic community in Michigan? "

" At $700 per month she must have one of the nicest places in town...ask the landlord to donate. "
