Richard Brown
WHITEHALL, Wis. — Richard Brown, 83, of Whitehall died Feb. 23, 2008, in the Grand View Care Center in Blair, Wis. Memorial services will be held for Richard at a later date. Jack Funeral home assisting the family with arrangements.

STODDARD, Wis. — Larry R. Denstad, 59, of Stoddard died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Woodruff-Jandt Funeral Home, La Crosse.

Margaret A. ‘Maggie’ Magin

Margaret A. “Maggie” Magin, 77, of La Crosse died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, at the Bethany St. Joseph Care Center. She was born Feb. 19, 1931, in Muscoda, Wis., to Theodore and Ellen (Carlson) Crogan. Maggie married John J. “Jack” Magin on Aug. 5, 1950.

She is survived by her husband, Jack; a son, Steve; two daughters, Mindy (Ron) Bakken and Tracey (Phil) Young; four grandchildren, Ben and Joe Bakken, and Shelby and Collin Young; a brother, Bernard (Kathleen) Crogan; three sisters-in-law, Marian Crogan, Evelyn Magin and Sally Magin, and many nieces, nephews; great-nieces and nephews; and great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Ervin and Edwin Crogan; two sisters, Evelyn Crogan and Florence Strasser; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Crogan and Ruth Raseman; and three brothers-in-law, Robert Magin, Richard Magin and LeRoy Strasser.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse. The Rev. John Wells will officiate. Private committal services will be held in the Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 p.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the funeral home.

Jim L. McCoy

HOLMEN, Wis. — Jim L. McCoy, 58, of Holmen died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, after a hard battle with ongoing complications of kidney dialysis for eight years.

He was born Feb. 9, 1950, in White Pine, Tenn., to James A. and Imagene (Cockrum) McCoy. On June 22, 1968, he married Nellie Pingel at Berean Baptist Church in Rockford, Ill. Jim was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed following Tony Stewart. In earlier years, he was very involved with racing at the La Crosse Interstate Speedway, following and taking great pride being crew chief for Steve Carlson. Jim was also a Packers fan and enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Nellie; two children, Gaynell (Paul) Clermont of Onalaska, Wis., and Damian (fiance, Shereen Esser) McCoy of Mount Horeb, Wis.; six grandchildren, MaeKenzy Kjos, Danielle Sands, Devon and Braxton Clermont, Rebecca Esser, and Austin McCoy; his mother, Imagene; two brothers, Dale and Jackie; five sisters, Wilma, Pat, Joyce, Tina “Wanda,” and Loretta; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father; his son, James L. McCoy; and other relatives.

Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, at Woodruff-Jandt Funeral Home, 4239 Mormon Coulee Road, La Crosse. Pastor Jerry Hatlevig will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse. Friends may call from noon until the time of service Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

Robert F. Stelplugh

HOUSTON, Minn. — Robert F. Stelplugh, 71, of Houston died Sunday morning, Feb. 24, 2008, at his home in Houston. Hoff Funeral Homes-Houston Chapel is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.

Elsie E. VanWormer

SPARTA, Wis. — Elsie E. VanWormer, 87, of Sparta died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, at Mulder Healthcare Facility, West Salem, Wis. She was born Sept. 2, 1920, in Mauston, Wis., to William C. and Ruth (Robinson) Laack. She grew up in the Mauston area and graduated from Mauston High School.

Elsie married Buford VanWormer on Aug. 5, 1940, in Dubuque, Iowa. After marriage, they lived in Wonewoc, Wis. They moved to Sparta in 1946. Buford passed away on April 8, 1999. She became a resident at Mulder’s in 2005. She enjoyed playing pool, cards, and fishing.

She is survived by her son, Junior (Mollie) VanWormer of Sparta; her grandchildren, Paul (Jenny) VanWormer, Mark (Stacy) VanWormer, Wayne (Mary) Arnold, William Arnold, Debra (Dewey) Olson, Susan (Brian) Erickson, and Tamara (Brent) Riley; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Brandt of Wonewoc; a brother, LeRoy Laack of Cuba City, Wis.; a son-in-law, Jerry Arnold of Leon, Wis.; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Donna Arnold; a granddaughter, Cheryl; a brother, Arthur Laack; and a sister, Dorothy Pollock.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sparta, with the Rev. Mark Wessel officiating. Burial will be in Farmer’s Valley Cemetery, rural Sparta. Family and friends are invited to call from 5 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Lanham-Miller Funeral Home, Sparta, and from 10 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday at the church.

Gerald ‘Chalky’ Wolfe

ARCADIA, Wis. — Gerald “Chalky” Wolfe, 75, of Arcadia died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, at the Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Medical Center in Arcadia. Wozney-Killian Funeral Home will be assisting the family with arrangements.
