Aquinas advances to state championship

.
MADISON — The Aquinas High School boys basketball team has secured a chance to play in its third WIAA state championship game in six years.

The Blugolds (23-3), ranked fifth in Division 3 by The Associated Press, earned that right by beating top-ranked Whitefish Bay Dominican (24-2) 68-58 in a semifinal game Thursday morning at the Kohl Center.

Junior guard Jimmy Whitehead had 17 points and eight rebounds to lead four double-figure scorers as the Blugolds watched the Knights storm back from a 15-point deficit and take a brief lead early in the fourth quarter.

By holding on for the victory, Aquinas qualified for the title game against Iola-Scandinavia (24-2), which beat Eau Claire Regis 53-50 in its semifinal. That game will be played at 6:35 p.m. Saturday at the Kohl Center.
