A recent report released March 10 by Citizen Action of Wisconsin determined that Wisconsin residents would, conservatively, save 40 percent per year in health insurance costs. Currently, Wisconsinites pay 10 percent to 25 percent of their pretax income on health care costs. Furthermore, Wisconsin health insurance costs are found to be 23 percent above the national average.
The Lerums assume that health care costs are always going to be high and this plan will only pay part of it. Taxpayers will pay the rest. Well, taxpayers already pay for the noninsured and under-insured who can not afford health insurance. The problem is the high cost of insurance and health care. Healthy Wisconsin will save an estimated $1.3 billion per year.
Lastly, we need health care for all. We pay taxes for war, roads and schools. Why not for health care? The fear of “government-run” health care is misguided. The government will not be telling you where you can get your medical care nor will it be hiring or firing medical staff.
One need only to familiarize oneself with the Healthy Wisconsin proposal to understand that it represents a very good and necessary start to having a sane health care policy in this state and country.
