Leonard E. Ames
DE SOTO, Wis. — Leonard E. Ames, 86, formerly of De Soto, died Feb. 20, 2008, in Monroe, La. He was born in Retreat, Wis., on June 15, 1921, to Franklin Pierce Ames and Florence Louisa (Tower) Ames.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Frank, Percy, Ross, Eugene and Glen Ames; one sister, Bernice VanGundy; three grandchildren, Jerry G., Sherry L. and Billy R. Ramsey; and one great-grandchild, Michael G. Ramsey.
Leonard served in the military from April 1941 to July 1945 and again from July 1949 to February 1950. He proudly served in the U.S. Army, including World War II battles in northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes and central Europe. Leonard was graded as excellent in character and for proficiency in his duties. In letters sent to his twin sister, Lois Noel, he reported the details of his life as a soldier and all that entailed from the humdrum of everyday military life to the spine-tingling likelihood of battle, always interspersed with the comical antics of his fellow soldiers. After the war, he worked as a heavy equipment operator and resided in Louisiana until this death.
Leonard is survived by his daughter and granddaughter, Cheryl Ramsey and Debra K. Ramsey of Louisiana; three great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Florence Traister of Onalaska, Wis., and Lois Noel of Prairie du Chien, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.
Interment at Walnut Mound Cemetery in Retreat, Wis., will take place at a later date.
Richard ‘Dick’ K. Bolduan
Richard “Dick” K. Bolduan, 71, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Friday March 21, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center due to complications of emphysema.
He was born in La Crosse on Nov. 14, 1936, to Frank and Lois (Branson) Bolduan-Frydrych. Dick graduated Aquinas High School in 1954. He then graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1958. He continued to study at Harvard and Stanford. He married Kay Lockwood, and she preceded him in death. In June 1985, Dick married Janet Schreier-Mason in La Crosse.
Dick worked for the Trane Co. for 35 years as a credit manager and business leader of business transformation, retiring in 1996. In retirement, he continued as a financial consultant.
Dick is survived by his loving wife, Janet; four daughters, Sarah (Rainer) Streib of Lemoore, Calif., Sally (Jim) Amoe of Rogers, Minn., Margie Mason and Sue (John) Knudson, both of La Crosse; one son, Jim Mason of Mason City, Iowa; four grandchildren, Kaylee, Nate and Nick Amoe, and Matt Streib; a cousin, Jane Bixter of Tucson, Ariz.; a brother-in-law, Jim Schreier of La Crosse; and many good friends.
In addition to his first wife, Kay; he was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Ed Frydrych; and a son, John Bolduan.
A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday March 24, at the Roncalli Newman Center, 1732 State St., La Crosse. The Rev. Mark Pierce will officiate, and a private burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday starting at 9:30 a.m. until time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Roncalli Newman Center Building Project.

Alma E. Enos
Alma E. Enos, 96, of La Crosse died Thursday, March 20, 2008, in Mulder Health Care Facility, West Salem, Wis.
She was born in Coon Valley, Wis., on Feb. 29, 1912, to Edward and Martha (Pederson) Tomten. She married Laurence Enos in 1949 in La Crosse. Laurence and Alma were both born on Feb. 29 in the same leap year. This caused them to be recognized in the national press for this rarity, but both refused any further publicity. Alma was a longtime employee of the New Villa restaurant and worked at K-Mart for several years. She was a long time member of Mary, Mother of the Church Parish at St. Thomas More Catholic Church and a member of the Altar Society.
She is survived by one brother, Arthur O. Tomten of Tomah, Wis.; nieces, Sharon (Henry) Ash of Holmen, Mary (David) Kastenschmidt of Mindoro, Wis., Nancy Briner of Peru, Ind., and Lucille Krause of Viroqua, Wis.; nephews, Burton Tomten of Chicago, Al (Jeanette) Graf of Hokah, Minn. She is further survived by sisters-in-law, Alice Tomten of Burlington, Wis., and Fern Tomten of Northport, Ala., as well as several great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her daughter, Elizabeth Ann; one sister and brother-in-law, Margaret (Alvin) Eide; two brothers, Walter and Blaine Tomten; and nephew, Charles Krause.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 24, in Mary, Mother of the Church Parish at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 2006 Weston St., La Crosse. The Rev. David Kunz will officiate, with burial to be held in the Catholic Cemetery, La Crosse. Family and friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass Monday in the church.

John E. ‘Jack’ Mc Cown
John E. “Jack Mc Cown,” 87, of La Crosse died Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse.
He was born July 31, 1920, in Danville, Ill., to Claud and Augusta (Lapchauka) Mc Cown. Jack is a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1942 until 1945. On Oct. 10, 1953, he married Audrey Wolfe in La Crosse. He was employed as a salesman for Desmond’s Mens Wear (formerly Howard’s Clothing) for 53 years. Jack was a past member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 1920 and the Roy L. Vingers American Legion Post 52, both in La Crosse. Jack along with his brother, Dick, were avid Purdue Boilermaker fans. Jack also could be seen attending and supporting all his grandchildren’s sporting events. He loved being among friends and relatives.
Jack is survived by his wife of 54 years, Audrey; two sons, Russell (Gretchen) Brinkman and Kerry (Kathryn) Brinkman; a daughter, Sharon (Douglas) Langrehr; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one on the way; two siblings, Richard (Dorothy) Mc Cown and Janet (Richard) Anderson; and many nieces; nephews; and good friends.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 26, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1010 Sill St., La Crosse. Pastor Stephan J. Sandness will officiate. Shirley Mae (Mullen) Sobeck
MINNESOTA CITY, Minn. — Shirley Mae (Mullen) Sobeck, 73, was born to Patrick John and Rose (Adank) Mullen in Winona, Minn., Feb. 26, 1935, one of 10 children.
She died March 19, 2008, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn., surrounded by her family.
Shirley is survived by her devoted husband of 50 years, Eugene E. Sobeck; six daughters, Cynthia Marie Prodzinski of Muscatine, Iowa, Karla Rose Mullen (Jerry) Laughlin of Omaha, Neb., Renee Ann (Daniel) Foster of La Crescent, Minn., Kelly Jean Welch of Castle Rock, Colo., Kay Lynn (Brent) Bailey of Minnesota City, and Nikki Jo (Troy) Bohm of Loveland, Colo.; 10 grandchildren, Kira Rose, Cassie Rose, Kylynn Rose, Alexander Delos, Mikaela Ann, Teah Mae, Hunter Patrick, Kaelen Rose, Alysa Rose and Dolan Robert; sister, Betty (Jack) Nelson of Winona; and stepchildren, Rita (Patrick) Prodzinski, Randy (Deb) Sobeck and Rick (Carrie) Sobeck, whose children and grandchildren have brought great joy to Shirley’s life. Other survivors include her many nieces and nephews, and friends.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; eight siblings; and stepdaughter, Debbie (Sobeck) Brommerich.
In addition to her family, Shirley was a great lover of nature and all animals and was a fervent and loyal Minnesota Vikings fan. Shirley was active and selfless in her work with the Winona Area Humane Society. In 2000, she fulfilled a lifelong dream of visiting Ireland, the birthplace of her father, with her daughters. Her sense of humor, passion for life, sensitivity and compassion for all living things are a legacy that will live on in her large, exuberant family.

A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held on Tuesday, March 25, at 11 a.m. at Hoff Funeral and Cremation Service Hansen Goodview (Minn.) Chapel, with the Rev. William David Byrne officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Winona. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. and also one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
