UW-L seeks another $4.8M for new academic building

.
Design plans are in place for a new academic building at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, but officials said Monday that $4.8 million still must be raised for the project.

The UW-L Foundation needs a total of $6 million to receive $38 million from the state to pay for the nearly 180,000-square-foot building.

At a press conference Monday, the university announced it has raised $1.2 million for the building, which would add 44 classrooms, two 250-seat auditoriums, a Hall of Nations Gathering Room, six study areas, three conference rooms and 10 department offices in the heart of campus.

The university must raise $3 million by Aug. 31 to solicit a letter of credit from local banks by Nov. 30, said Al Trapp, vice president of the UW-L Foundation. The entire $6 million would have to be secured by the time construction starts in spring 2009.

If the university fails to reach the $3 million by Aug. 31, that doesn’t mean the project won’t happen, Trapp said.

“We would have to talk with our financial institutions to see whether there was a scenario that could still make it possible,” he said.

UW-L Chancellor Joe Gow said the “juggling act” of fundraising for both a new stadium and the academic building has been a challenge.

“Throughout the fundraising discussions concerning the stadium and academic building, the university has urged the foundation to avoid taking steps that might imperil the academic building, so now we’re deeply concerned to hear that the foundation’s credit has been stretched to the point where almost $2 million must be raised in five months or the academic building might not move forward,” Gow said after the news conference.

Monday the UW-L foundation launched an internal fundraising campaign on campus and hopes to get 100 percent participation from faculty and staff, said Trapp.

The new building will have classrooms that allow for technical support, such as floor outlets, movable desks and screens on side walls. It will include sustainable features as well and allow for future technology expansions, said Valentine Schute, project architect from River Architects.

UW-L senior Jacie Gamroth is excited about the more modern technology and classroom space.

Gamroth said she has had to wait a whole year to take a class due to lack of classroom space.

The university has yet to decide on a name for the building. Whatever name is chosen will need to be approved by the UW System Board of Regents, said Trapp.

If construction does begin in spring 2009, the building would be ready for fall 2011.

" Precious 1- You are absolutely correct. It is no secret, they have met with those land owners many times as well. As a matter of fact they have already stated that not only will the housing baton be handed to private landlords, it will be on the west side of campus. All documented, and apparently forgotten by most readers and posters of this Blog. Can we look forward to more 'satellite parking'? "

" They're handing off the housing to cherry-picked, connected, slumlord, developers. They only have so much heating capacity and upgrading would cost too much so they have to tear down to build new unnecessary icon buildings. Hence, push the housing into the community so it is someone else's problem to police their behavior too, while the slumlords get rich. "

" They don't need my support? Then how come they are coming to the people and asking us for 4.8 million? If they did not need money then they would not need our support. "

" Where is Dean when these waste of $$$ items appear??? Oh that's right Bush didn't do this one..........Colleges look more like all the overspent hopsital building going up.....but wait that's why a 5 minute office visit is over $100 now what a joke. I'm all for education but give me a break... "

" Do professors really teach ! When I went to UWL, I received very little teaching and alot of book reading and tests. I could have done that without a professor for sure.
Keep gaming the system state union employees.
We need cuts made fast, we need a finance professor to tell us the truth about budgets. "

" Sorry UW-L! I'm all tapped out between city, state and Federal taxes and the already way too high cost of college tuition for a couple of kids. Want a new building? Go beg from your profs. They make the big bucks! "

" I'll be the first to admit- I'm not even going to waste my time reading this article, yet I'm going to open my big mouth. HAVE A LITTLE TACT UW-L!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its not bad enough that you're begging for money for the staduim- Now this- AT THE SAME TIME????? C'mon, get real! I'm done sending my yearly contribution- its getting a little rediculous. I saw on the news that if someone makes a 5 million dollar donation, they'll name the building after them- whoopie!!!! I think the big shots have contributed enough (thanks Don Weber). You've done enough. "

" Not too long ago, UWL was crying for more money, the state provided money, that was supposed to help low income students, but removed the restrictions on the funding. It seems the money is burning holes in their respective pockets. In times of tight money, the last thing we need is more real estate torn up and new buildings going up "

JS wrote on Mar 25, 2008 3:08 PM:

" Why should the taxpayers, especially those in la Crosse, consider donating their money when this building will drive students more into the neighborhoods around campus since they are demolishing two dormitories that are in decent shape. This project will not get my support as they has still not addressed the shortage of on-campus student housing that this will create. "

justanopinion wrote on Mar 25, 2008 2:05 PM:

" CommonSense- What an excellent question! The stadium pledges will more than likely not pour in this year. People have many incentives to break down this gift into a few years for tax reasons. It is my opinion that the stadium will seek imaginative financing. We shall have to wait and see what it ultimately is? "

random annoying bozo wrote on Mar 25, 2008 1:10 PM:

" you know, if you want to donate money to the University, knock yourself out. give til it hurts if that's what trips your trigger. but all too often the ones who want everyone to give (via taxes) are always the ones who never donate. and as a side note, why does it seem like the last decade or two, 'higher education' seems to be all the rage? i'm beginning to think we have failed students so badly in our public schools, they need 4 or 5 of more years of schooling to catch up. there sure seems to be a lot of 'degreed' people in jobs that never needed one before. "

CommonSense wrote on Mar 25, 2008 12:37 PM:

" If I recall correctly, UWL was BEGGING for money for the new field a few months ago, stating if they didn't get donations, they couldn't build it. So now I am to assume that all the finances have materialized for the field, and now the school has excess money for this new building. On the news last night, Gow was saying people should donate to the new buildings because 'They will be a legacy to future generations'...I imagine that is what was said to people 50 years ago that donated to the buildings that are going to be torn down! What a legacy! "

Willie wrote on Mar 25, 2008 10:18 AM:

" Pretty soon they will have brand new empty buildings because nobody can afford the tuition. Maybe the county will lease it for more jail space. "

" We should have nipped this in the bud while the secret meetings were going on, but nobody got wind of it....don't even try to say the tribune bosses weren't in on it. The developers have been building replacement "student" housing for many many months now. They knew this was coming, they were part of it, now this, to be rammed down our gullets.
Feeling like a mushroom yet? "

justanopinion wrote on Mar 25, 2008 9:18 AM:

" Like a vacuum salesman. Let' add an emergency time limit to this project, again. The other posters are correct, they are tearing down present student housing, while they are adding 500 more students to enrollment. The next 'emergency' will be parking. I guess they can come to the City and they can tax their constituents for a whatchamacallit and we can all pretend that it is not money we could have used elsewhere as City taxpayers. Say, didn't you just give huge raises to the Chancellors? "

get it right wrote on Mar 25, 2008 9:08 AM:

" What is wrong with the current buildings? Why are they not suitable for educating our youth? For some reason the powers to be in this city equate new buildings with better education. It could not be further from the truth. As a graduate of UWL, I am one of the few I went to school with who still reside in LaCrosse. I would not give them a dime, and I am voting no to question 2 on the 2nd. And it has nothing to do with my taxes going up. "

shoeymis wrote on Mar 25, 2008 9:05 AM:

" Funny how UWL has professors that cost the local governments money (star/cross issue) but asks for donations so they can bring in more professors.

" It's funny someone brought up the fact that they are not building any more student housing...in fact they are taking down two resident halls to make room for this new building...something for you think about...doesn't really make sense to me "

The Real World wrote on Mar 25, 2008 8:22 AM:

" I see a few blood sucking leaches from UWL have posted this morning already. The worst problem is they are going to tear down perfectly good buildings to make space for this building. We can not afford this, please don't give them a dime, and call your legislature. "

Ken wrote on Mar 25, 2008 7:36 AM:

" UWL continues to grow because taxpayers continue to finance these growth spurts. Anytime it costs an organization 6 million dollars to receive 38 million dollars, someone is paying higher taxes. Student housing is not being built now. What are being built are two auditoriums, six study areas, conference rooms and 10 department offices. No extra student housing. With more classrooms come more instructors, with no additional students, tuition costs will raise for all students. While offering more courses is great. Construction growth has to contain housing construction to add revenue to the budget so existing students have the ability to afford education at UWL. To suggest that the taxpayers will not notice the 32 million dollars coming from the state is just a little naive. "

Sully wrote on Mar 25, 2008 7:17 AM:

" $38 million is already coming from taxpayers. I don't think it is too much to ask for The U to come up with $6 million. My point is the pattern that seems to be in place for funding UWL projects. "

tax justice wrote on Mar 25, 2008 7:04 AM:

" Ignorance is bliss. UWL continues to grow. Demand for a college education continues to grow so much that UWL stop taking applications in early January. There were 7 applications for each freshman opening. Students now pay approximately 52% of all education costs. Compare that to 30% in the 70's. Those of us who received at education in the late 60's and 70's were extremely fortunate.

The future is now. Students will not survive, nor the economy in the future w/o a college education. The request for additional funds is not being requested from taxpayers, it is being requested from donations. The first significant donations are being asked of employees, every employee.

With more than 10,000 students and over 600 employees, to imply that the University does not have a huge impact on the local economy is simple ignorance.

"

DailyReader wrote on Mar 25, 2008 6:39 AM:

" Either that or someone will point out the statistics that show college age people and enrollments have probably peaked, and will decline from here on out...making such a building unnecessary. "

Sully wrote on Mar 25, 2008 5:24 AM:

" Gee, I wonder where this is going. Sounds like a familiar story. Soon will be the talk about how much the University adds to the local economy and the City should make a huge "donation". "

Joe LaCrosse wrote on Mar 25, 2008 3:02 AM:

" It never seems to amaze me how the politicians that we elect to the statehouse forget how people get their monies. Do they ever think that we would like to hang onto a few pennies after how much it costs to live these days? How about a little relief?
But that is how the state budget works....Spend it all now, or get less next year.....
REMEMBER THIS ON ELECTION DAY.... "
