News tracker: Man accused of sexual assault

.
What we knew: Jason A. Amerson, 30, of 410 Copeland Ave., was charged in December with first-degree sexual assault and misdemeanor bail jumping after a woman said he raped her at gunpoint in a North Side neighborhood early Dec. 22. Amerson had been in the La Crosse County jail on a $50,000 cash bond.

What’s new: Amerson’s attorney, Michael Colgan, questioned at a hearing Thursday whether the assault happened after it was revealed the State Crime Lab failed to find Amerson’s DNA in fluids taken during an examination of the woman. But La Crosse County Assistant District Attorney Tania Bonnett said she is not prepared to dismiss the case and wants more time to meet with the woman and the medical personnel who did the examination. La Crosse County Circuit Judge Scott Horne granted the state more time but released Amerson on a signature bond.
What’s next: A status conference will be held at 9 a.m. April 21.

" I don't think judging someones guilt/innocence over a few lines of a news story makes much sense. DNA is not the whole story, just a factual statement in the case. When you have a lengthy criminal record like Amerson, hopefully the DA is checking all the evidence in the case. "

" The Da is gonna lose this one.. Where do they find these horrible prosecuters. Plus shes facing Colgan. "

" Just another right to due process being trampled on. The charge should be dismissed and the man free and cleared. If the DA thinks she can build a case then recharge him later since he has not been tried anywhere yet except in the media.I dont know this man but the evidence that has become a staple of conviction says he is innocent. Ms Bonnett is not judge and jury she is an assitant DA with a very weak case. Stop embarassing yourself. "

" HMMMMMMMM same DA as the Jacques case where the man didnt recieve a fair trial at all because he was poor and here you have a case where DNA EXCLUDED the man and she continued to assume he is guilty and is not prepared to dismiss the case.THIS IS THE DIFFERENCE WHEN YOU CAN AFFORD TO HIRE AN ATTORNEY and dont use the public defenders office. DNA has convicted many a person because its 99.9 % accurate so how can you continue an investigation into a case where that same evidence has cleared the accused. ONLY IN LA CROSSE COUNTY WI with an over zealous assistant DA trying to make a name for herself at all cost! "

" if it wasn't him, then why aren't people concerned that there is an armed rapist still at large? "

" What's the point of rape if you don't "finish the job"?
It would seem impossible to rape and not leave DNA
of some sort...fluids escape even without
"finishing the job"
It sounds like another false accusation.
Women that cry false rape should be put on a sexual
registry so men know to stay the he!! away from them. "

" People watch too much CSI! DNA evidence is not the only kind of evidence. The lack of it doesn't mean he didn't do it. There could have been problems with collecting the evidence, the victim may have washed or wiped it off, or maybe he didn't finish the job if you know what I mean. If there is not enough other evidence to support the assault, then and only then should he be let off the hook. Of course if the victim made it up, in light of the new evidence she may recant. In the mean time he is already on the street free on signature bond. "

" How can this man still be held when DNA cleared him? I think Attorney Tania Bonnett just wants to waste tax payers money and keep this guy in jail. "
