" mk - you ask an important question. "Why do people use drugs?" This needs more discussion, but you must know it's not always to escape 'reality' or for entertainment. Historically, human beings have altered their states of conciousness to learn, grow, evolve, etc. To lump all drugs and/or drug users categorically is short-sighted and a demonstration of ignorance. Prohibition didn't work for alcohol and it obviously isn't working for other drugs. Think of all the crime, imprisonment, etc. that we have in our country associated with the prohibition of drugs. Through legalization and/or decriminilization we could see vast improvements in our country. I know mk you may have a knee-jerk reaction to that last statement, but if you do your homework on drugs and the history of drugs, it's hard to argue with. "

To escape stupid posts. Why are some recreational drugs ok (alcohol)... taxed, profited on and ok, even though once illegal? Probably because the law makers wanted to drink a beer, that's it.
You're free to do as we tell you... that is not free.
Al Capone did not create the prohibition, the prohibition created Al Capone ... but govt doesn't learn. "

The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights all ensure that we all remain free from the tyranny of the few. and your right to the pursuit of happiness ends where it tries to step on my definition of happiness, which in this case includes the right to associate with the species (in this case plants) of my choice. Have these people become so starved of entertainment that they can't find things to do for fun (other than drugs) on their own? Why for instance Mtdew101 did you find it necessary to try this drug in the first place? Those of you who believe that drug legalization is going to make our nation so much better are strongly mistaken. It not only sends the wrong message to our youth it makes society less safe. Yeah lets legalize a drug that makes people feel crazy for a short time, that almost sounds smart. "

" What I'm saying is that when a society starts banning things it is stepping on a mighty slippery slope. If we don't ban an herb (tobacco) which is clearly addictive and harmful to health, then how can anyone make an argument against another herb (like salvia or cannabis) which are not addictive or as harmful as cigarettes . . or as quoted in the news blurb, cell phones, which many parents allow their kids to use for hours each day. It is such obvious hypocrisy. Prescription drugs kill far more people each year than all illegal drugs combined. The same holds true for alcohol. "

I didn't feel like I was insane by any means, when i tried it all I did was sit and laugh the hardest I've ever laughed for no reason for about 10 minutes. Whats the harm in that? I do understand the problem with some recreational drugs but not all of them. I know plenty of adults that like to come home after work and smoke a joint to calm themselves down. As long as they are responsible and keep themselves under control whats the big deal? "

This was obvious craziness, whether it was influenced by drugs I don't know, but in all likelihood was. Those of you against the war on drugs need to wake up to realities like these. "

No where in our constitution does it say that we are entitled to take any kinds of drugs that we want. Our government was established to protect the well being of all its citizens. How then are we protected when there is a drug out there that literally makes you crazy, as some of you have said, for 10 to 15 minutes? "

" Oh yeah, let's not forget cell phones, this from today's news, but hey, it's not about the money!: New research has revealed that mobile phones are more injurious to people’s health than smoking. Why is that? It seems that mobile phone usage and brain cancer are linked to each other. According to one of the world’s top neurosurgeons, British Vini Khurana, using mobile phones for 10 years could double the risk of brain cancer. “This danger has far broader public-health ramifications than asbestos and smoking,” he told the Independent of London.
Dr. Khurana based his assessment on the fact that three billion people now use the phones worldwide, which is three times higher than people who smoke. Smoking kills some five million globally each year. "

A person is more likely to be harmed or killed by a medical error in the hospital than by using a plant with a safe track record proven by thousands of years of continuous human usage in Central America. If our representatives want to do something important how about changing the tax codes so I do not have to pay 36% of my earning to the government. How about stop sending my tax dollars to countries that do nothing for us as a country. How about some foreign aid used within our borders.
How about decrimalizing marijuana and free up prison for true criminals.
To discuss this in open session is a waste of time and money. "

Put the providers in prison OK, but the users? What does that accomplish. It provides training for criminal occupations when they get out. It offers no and I repeat no meaniful help to stay off drugs. It increases our prision population and increases drastically the taxes to fund this. It is a feel good legislation which does nothing to solve the problem. "

If you do smoke it the high only lasts about 10 minutes if that and even though it is a better high then smoking pot its not worth the money for as much as you get. Also you have to be 18 to purchase salvia so if kids do want to try smoking something I still think pot will be the drug of choice. "

With the money that is left after the bills are paid, then that money can go towards programs that show little resolve. Tribune I think you forgot to say how much this "new" drug costs. "
