Ehrsam, Kapanke and Gamroth lose tight La Crosse County board races

.
The La Crosse County Board will have nine new faces after challengers unseated five incumbents Tuesday and newcomers filled four vacant seats.

Supervisor and former board chairman James Ehrsam appeared to have lost his re-election bid by two votes, but vowed to get a recount.
Challenger Bridget Flood had 194 votes to Ehrsam’s 192 in unofficial returns Tuesday night.

Ehrsam has represented District 12 on the county board since 1986, and was chairman for 12 years until 2002. “I worked hard,” he said. “It was a clean campaign as far as I know.”

Flood said she’d ask for a recount if it had gone the other way. “I envisioned all kinds of outcomes, but I never dreamed of a split down the middle,” said Flood, a county worker who will have to resign her position if the results hold up.

In District 5 in the campus area of La Crosse, incumbent Jacie Gamroth lost a write-in campaign with Robert Erickson by five votes. Gamroth’s name wasn’t on the ballot because her nominating petitions were a signature short. Erickson mounted a last-minute campaign. Both are University of Wisconsin-La Crosse students.

But in District 23, Gamroth’s mother, Tammy Gamroth, defeated incumbent supervisor Brian Kapanke by two votes.

West Salem Village President Dennis Manthei defeated Supervisor Terry Hanson in District 21. Manthei had beat Hanson for village president in 2005.

La Crosse Common Council member Audrey Kader reclaimed the District 11 seat she lost two years ago to Jason Gillett. Gillett, a Viterbo University student, announced he was pulling out of the race because he’s leaving the area after graduation.

“It looks like we’ll have a good group of people,” said Board Chairman Steve Doyle, who was unopposed. “The common theme is that the people elected are people who can work with each other.”

Doyle said he has support from between two-thirds and three-quarters of the 35 member board, and expects to be re-elected chairman when the new board convenes April 15.

In four open races, Joe Veenstra beat former supervisor Jim Moe in District 3, Bill Brockmiller defeated Carl Viner in District 13, Bev Mach defeated Bruce Parr in District 15, and Marilyn Pedretti beat Mark Huesmann in District 27.

Seven incumbents with challengers easily won re-election:

In District 7, Roger J. Plesha beat La Crosse Common Council member Jim Bloedorn; in District 17, Donald Meyer defeated Tari Tovsen; in District 18, Tara Johnson defeated Dave Drewes for the third time; in District 19, Robert F. Keil beat Dave Gebhart; in District 25, Jeffrey C. Schroeder defeated Terry Erickson; in District 26, Vicki Burke defeated James Kinsman; and in District 32 Patrick Schippers survived a write-in challenge from Arlene Benrud, who Schippers had defeated in 2006.

" Ugh, not another internet libertarian. Government social services are essential to ensuring that everyone starts the game on an even playing field. If you eliminate free universal education, then success in life would be based primarily on a person's PARENTS being wealthy or poor (which will provide a better education- a $15,000/year private school, or a $2000/year one?). So we'd be going from a merit-based system to a LUCK-based system. "

" RanDomino, nobody is disputing the HUGE WASTE OF MONEY THE IRAQ MESS HAS BEEN. I am against excessive government spending on domestic services as well as wasteful spending overseas.

I don't "demand that taxes be eliminated without affecting services! Give me everything for free!!" I don't think we should have 90% of the government services we now have. Name me one thing the govt does better than the private sector? "

The hypocrisy is astounding. We can't afford to bring the schools into the 21st century, but meanwhile the war has cost La Crosse residents over $57 Million. "

" Five losing incumbents is considerable and I believe the O'malley contract was a big factor. Too bad 7 more incumbents were re-elected. We need to keep working on getting the spenders out. "

" Gamroth now is demanding a recount?

Why she lost 52% to 48%. Thats 4% of the vote. John Kerry conceded to George W. Bush in 2004 and he only lost by 3% and that was for President of the United States. She should do the honorable thing and concede. "

" Good! Gamroth got beat! All she is another rubber stamp! Perhaps this new young man will actually use his brain unlike her! "

" Egotistical arrogance hopefully is slowly dwindling away in the good ole boy network commonly referred to as the LaCrosse County Board. Stop wasting tax dollars. "

" Erickson's Platform:

I am running on a platform of getting government out of the lives of its citizens. I am strongly opposed to any drug or alcohol laws and will vote against any and all bills that come through. I believe that it is up to the individual to make decisions about what they put in their body, not the government. It all comes down to personal responsibility.

" Erickson's Platform:

I am running because I am sick and tired of all of this run-away spending and taxing in our local government. The straw that broke the camel's back for me was the approval of a $31 million new jail. This project is unneeded and is going to be paid for by us through property tax increases. As we all know, most of the land owners around La Crosse are landlords that lease to students. An increase in property tax means a hefty increase in rent costs. It is time to bring some fiscal responsibility back into La Crosse.

" Go Robert! La Crosse now has a leader who will side with taxpayers. And yes, Robert is very good with numbers. Congratulations La Crosse! "

" This is a huge victory for the people that care about fiscal discipline in La Crosse. Robert Erickson ran a campaign based on opposing the $30 Million Dollar Jail and getting the government out of your life and he WON!!

I guess the voters in the fifth district were won over because of his libertarian/small govt views.

Congrats Bobby! "
