Samuel Schroeder’s watercolor of a drake and hen standing amid gray water and sky was chosen from among 690 entries from 54 schools across the state.
Schroeder, 17, said he took several weeks to complete the painting. Holmen students who participate in the contest also are required to spend at least two weeks researching their chosen species’ body shape, habitat and behavior in the wild, said Holmen High art teacher Liz Schank.
Holmen students also won the state competition in 2006 and 2004.
Schroeder’s painting will go on to compete with winners from other states at the Federal Junior Duck Stamp Conservation and Design Contest on April 17 at the San Diego Zoo. A
panel of five judges will pick the top three entries.
The national winner receives a free trip to Washington, D.C., in June for the stamp’s first day of sales ceremony, plus $5,000. Second place receives $3,000 and third place $2,000.
