Peter Knox Cline

RICHMOND, Ind. — Dr. Peter Knox Cline, 66, professor of history at Earlham College, Richmond, died unexpectedly on March 29, 2008. Peter was a professor at Earlham since 1976. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1963 after attending Cornell University for one year. His academic excellence earned him membership in Phi Beta Kappa. He then pursued graduate studies at Stanford University on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, where he received an M.A. and Ph.D. in English history.

He taught for a short time at the University of California-Davis before moving to Richmond to teach at Earlham. He served as associate academic dean from 1988 to 1990 and also served on occasion as director of the humanities program.

A beloved teacher, mentor and colleague, Peter maintained contact with many former students. He was a member of the YMCA’s Ys Men Club. He leaves behind many friends who will sorely miss him.

Peter was born in La Crosse in 1942 and raised there. In 1964, he married Ann Esch, also of La Crosse, in London, England. They divorced in 1977 but remained constant friends. She predeceased him in 2001. Peter’s parents, Edgar Allen Cline and Audrey Marie Knox Cline, also preceded him in death.

He is survived by his three siblings, Judith Deng of Indianapolis, Stephen Cline of Stamford, Conn., and Kathleen Cline of Kent, Wash. He is also survived by one niece and three nephews, Tania Deng of Indianapolis, Brian Deng of Encinitas, Calif., Dr. Stephen Deng of E. Lansing, Mich., and Andrew Cline of Stamford, Conn. He is also survived by two great-nieces and two great-nephews, Alexandra Deng, Emily Deng and Michael Deng of Encinitas, and Geoffrey Deng of E. Lansing. He also leaves to grieve him three kitties, Leilah, Lena and Leo, who were his dear companions.

The family will hold a memorial service for Peter at Earlham College in September. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Peter Knox Cline Memorial Scholarship, Earlham College, Advancement Office; 801 National Road West, Richmond IN 47374.

John T. Hauge

FERRYVILLE, Wis. — John T. Hauge, 66, of Ferryville died Friday, April 4, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center in La Crosse. He had struggled with many health problems for the past 20 years.

John was born May 26, 1941, the 10th child of 12 to Elmer and Sophia (Midthum) Hauge in Viroqua, Wis. On June 24, 1967, he married Betty Ward at Franklin Lutheran Church. The couple lived on Nash Ridge for most of their married life. John worked as a patrolman for Freeman Township for over 30 years. The past two years he had worked at the Rick Bakkom Rabbitry. John was baptized, confirmed and a lifetime member of Franklin Lutheran Church, where he served as trustee. He enjoyed fishing, camping, poker games, fixing things, visiting with family and friends, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Betty; three children, Mary (Jeff) Nedland of Westby, Wis., Jonathon (Sandy) Hauge of Holmen, Wis., and Elizabeth Hauge of La Crosse; seven grandchildren, Chasity, Jessica, Raven and Talon, Rachel and Joseph and Bailey; siblings, Arden Hauge of Kenosha, Wis., Allen (Louise) Hauge of Geneva, Ill., Shirley Adkins of South Milwaukee, Anna Skrede of Kenosha and Sandra (Herman) Sime of Ferryville; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Donte’ Joseph Hauge Jackson; and siblings, Ivan Hauge, Thelma Zitzner, Erland Hauge, Dorothy Owen, Kenneth Hauge and Marlene Emerson.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, at Franklin Lutheran Church. Pastor Pete Beckstrand will officiate, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home in Viroqua, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., and at the church Wednesday from 10 a.m. until service time.

Ivor ‘Butch’ L. Owens

SPARTA, Wis. — Ivor “Butch” L. Owens, 64, of Sparta died Saturday, April 5, 2008, at home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lanham-Miller Funeral Home, Sparta. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Shamrock Union Cemetery, Shamrock, Wis. Friends may call from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. today, and from 10 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday, both at the funeral. Katheryn C. Hagen

SPARTA, Wis. — Katheryn C. Hagen, 102, of Sparta died Saturday, April 5, 2008, at Rolling Hills Rehabilitation Center, Sparta. Private family services will be held at a later time. Vilas Yttri

DE SOTO, Wis. — Vilas Yttri, 87, of De Soto died early Sunday morning, April 6, 2008, in Florida. Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced later in the week by the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home of De Soto.

LYNXVILLE, Wis. — LaVona B. Strand, 82, of Lynxville died Friday, April 4, 2008, at her home after a short illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, at Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien, Wis., with Pastor Lynn Schreck officiating. Burial will be in Dickson Cemetery, Lynxville. Friends may call today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, and also one hour prior to services on Tuesday.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 59 years, Edward Sr. of Lynxville; three children, Edward C. (Carol) Strand Jr. of Lynxville, Carol (Cliff) Tollefson of Seneca, Wis., and Joesph Strand of La Crosse; seven grandchildren, Craig (Pam) Tollefson of Prairie du Chien, Chad (Stephaine) Tollefson of Bangor, Wis., Curt Tollefson of Seneca, Amanda (Ryan) Buckles of Stoddard, Wis., Erin (Kirk) Konicheck of Richland Center, Wis., Sara (Derrick) Boxrucker of Prairie du Chien and Edward D. Strand of La Crosse; seven great-grandchildren, Tucker, Elaina, Carter, Madyson, Emma, McKenzie and Regan; two sisters, Juanita Vanderbilt and Mavis (Bill) Vanderbilt, both of Prairie du Chien; a brother-in-law, Gordon Strand of De Soto, Wis.; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

LaVona Bernice was born Jan. 28, 1926, in Lincoln, Neb., to Charles and Jeanette (Davidson) Hamilton. She graduated from Seneca High School in 1945. She married Edward Strand on April 23, 1949. They lived in Ferryville, Wis., for a time before moving to Lynxville, where they have lived the past 50 years. She worked for National Dec in Prairie du Chien and also for McGregor Electronics in McGregor, Iowa.

LaVona was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Blanch (Kinger) Dumprope; two sisters-in-law, Christie Quamme and Charlotte Strand; four brothers-in-law, Richard (Dick) Vanderbilt, Howard Kinger, Willie Dumprope and Mildred Quamme.

Irene M. Carlsen

TOMAH, Wis. — Irene M. Carlsen, 89, of Tomah died peacefully April 6, 2008, at the Cranberry Courts Assisted Living Facility. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lone Rock Baptist Church, rural New Lisbon, Wis.. Pastor Raymond Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in the Orange Cemetery, town of Orange, Wis. Relatives and friends are invited to call from 10 a.m. until the time of service Wednesday at the church. Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Marguerite E. Wright

ONALASKA, — Marguerite E. Wright, 90, died in Bethany-St. Joseph Center on Saturday, April 5, 2008. Funeral services are tentative for 11 a.m. Friday in Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 401 Main St., Onalaska. Burial will be in the Onalaska Cemetery. Tentatively, friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. Friday until the service. A complete obituary will be provided.
