The Feline Communal Room opened in late February and allows cats to co-exist in a “more natural environment,” with built-in scratching posts and window views from their own miniature condos, Executive Director Heather Schmid said.
“It is more a benefit to the cats rather than the shelter,” Schmid said. “It should bring more attention to all of the cats and allow us to feature some of our longer-term and harder-to-place cats.”
The 75-square-foot room allowed the shelter to create more space for all its adoptable cats, kittens and small animals, while reducing the spread of upper respiratory infection, Schmid said. Adult cats live in the first adoption room, so visitors see them first, while kittens and small animals are in the second, separate adoption room.
“Prior to this renovation, small animals were tucked away in a room that was neither visible nor readily accessible to the public,” she said. “Now, small animals are seen almost immediately, which we hope will increase their adoption rates and the visitors’ overall awareness that these little critters are in search of homes, too.”
The space has been called the Feline Communal Room since its opening, but the humane society would like to change that — and raise some funds in the process.
