Walter C. Schlicht
VIROQUA, Wis. — Walter C. Schlicht, 85, of Viroqua died Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at Vernon Manor in Viroqua. He was born Dec. 1, 1922, in rural Chaseburg, Wis., to Frederick and Irene (Mundstock) Schlicht.

Walter was a World War II U.S. Army veteran serving from November 1942 to April 1946 as a medic in the European Theatre. He received a Battle Star for the Rhineland and Central European campaigns, a Bronze Star for Meritorious Service and a Combat Medical Badge. Walter married Esther Lund on Dec. 4, 1944. She died in June 1978. He married Catherine Johnson McDuffie on March 27, 1981.

Walter graduated in 1948 from UW-Madison with a B.S. in Agriculture. He worked for Bowman Dairy Co. in Chicago for 11½ years and then established his own insurance agency in Viroqua in July 1959. Walter retired in April 2001. He was a long-time member of the English Lutheran Church in Viroqua. Walter loved the members there and most of all he loved his Savior Jesus Christ. He was active in church and served in many areas. Walter was a 60-year member of the Jacobson-Olson American Legion Post 138 and also the Running-Johnson-Ray VFW Post 3032 in Viroqua.

Walter enjoyed squirrel hunting, golfing, cooking and was an avid fan of the Wisconsin Badgers and Green Bay Packers.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine; two sons, Kurt (Donna) of Indianapolis and Kevin (Cathy) of Viroqua; two granddaughters, Maggie Schlicht of Stoddard, Wis., and Jenny Schlicht of La Crosse; two great-grandsons, Vincent Walter and Paul Kevin; a sister, Esther Leisso of Onalaska, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and first wife, Esther, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Lehrke and Fritz Schlicht; and two sisters, Viola Beitlich and Laura Sackett.

A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 13, at English Lutheran Church in Viroqua. Pastor John Berg will officiate. Burial, with military honors, will be in the Coon Valley (Wis.) Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday from 12:30 p.m. until service time at the church. Memorials may be given to English Lutheran Church or to the charity of one’s choice. Seland Funeral Home in Coon Valley is assisting the family.

HOLMEN, Wis. — Lyle A. Bredemann, 77, of Holmen died at his home Wednesday, April 9, 2008. Funeral services will be announced by Fossum Funeral Home, Onalaska, Wis.

Merrill W. Shesler

Merrill W. Shesler, 90, of La Crosse died Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at his home. His body will be cremated; no services are planned at this time. Woodruff-Jandt Funeral Home, La Crosse is in charge of arrangements.

Kara Beth Gilbertson

MENOMONIE, Wis. — Kara B. Gilbertson, 42, of Menomonie died due to a massive brain aneurysm on Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire, Wis.

Kara Beth Gilbertson was born Sept. 19, 1965, in Eau Claire. She is the daughter of Carlyle and Ruth (Grotjahn) Gilbertson. Kara was raised in Menomonie and attended schools here. She loved Menomonie and was a lifelong resident.

For many years, Kara was employed at Dave’s Golden Shears and Lakeside Lounge. The past two years, she had been attending UW-Stout for vocational rehabilitation because of her love for people. She had a gift for making people laugh and smile. Kara was an avid reader and loved doting on her niece, Sydney. She also cherished time spent with her many friends. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Kara gave in death, as she gave in life, through organ and tissue donation.

Kara is survived by her parents, Carlyle and Ruth Gilbertson of Fort Myers, Fla.; a brother, Larry Gilbertson of Woodbury, Minn.; a sister, Heidi (Andy) Gansberg of Menomonie; her niece, Sydney Gansberg of Menomonie; and her special friends, Barbara Knopps, Jo Hayes and Kari Nesseth-Klein. She is also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins and many dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her beloved grandparents; a younger brother, Michael; cousin, Allan; and uncle, Roy.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 12, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Menomonie, with Pastor Roy Harrisville officiating. There will be a reception to follow. Family and friends are welcome from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie and at the church one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

Burial will be in Tamarack Lutheran Cemetery near Arcadia, Wis., at 3:30 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Dana Jackson officiating. After the committal, there will be a reception at Tamarack Lutheran Church.

The family suggests memorials to the undergraduate degree program in vocational rehabilitation for nontraditional students at UW-Stout. These can be made through the Stout Foundation Office, (715) 232-1151.

Lu Wayne G. Halverson

SPRING GROVE, Minn. — Lu Wayne G. Halverson, 92, of Spring Grove died Thursday, April 10, 2008, at Tweeten Health Services, Spring Grove. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Roble Funeral Home, Spring Grove. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Caledonia, Minn. Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Eugene John Waldera Sr.

BLAIR, Wis. — Eugene John Waldera Sr., 62, of Blair died on Wednesday, April 9, 2008, in Marinuka Manor, Galesville, Wis., with his family at his side.

Eugene was born on Oct. 24, 1945, in Independence, Wis., to Apolinary and Irene (Kampa) Waldera. He married Beverly Meyer on Jan. 25, 1969, in Independence.

Eugene drove truck most of his life.

Eugene is survived by his wife, Beverly; a son, Eugene Jr. of Taylor, Wis.; two daughters, Heidi (Scott) Pieper of Melrose, Wis., and Darlene (friend, Doug Stegerwald) Waldera of Blair; two grandsons, Dusty Waldera and Mitchell Stegerwald; four brothers; five sisters; 25 nieces and nephews; six brothers-in-law; and five sisters-in-law.

In addition to his parents, Eugene was preceded in death by a son, Keith; a brother; three brothers-in-law; and two nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Tuesday, April 15, at 11 a.m. in Saint Ansgar’s Catholic Church, with burial in the Rest Haven Cemetery, both in Blair. The Rev. Joseph O’Hara will officiate.

Visitation will be Monday, April 14, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Jack Funeral Home, Blair, where a Christian prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church.

Engvold ‘Bill’ W. Vian

SPARTA, Wis. — Engvold “Bill” W. Vian, 85, of Sparta died Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at his home. Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Lanham-Miller Funeral Home, Sparta. Burial will be at a later time in Farmer’s Valley Cemetery, rural Sparta.
