Warren R. Brabant
APPLE VALLEY, Minn. — Warren R. Brabant, 72, of Apple Valley died Sunday, April 13, 2008, at his home.
He was born March 1, 1936, in La Crosse to Ann L. (Wendling) Brabant and Joseph D. Brabant.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Brabant of Apple Valley; his twin sister, Carol Winters of La Crosse; a daughter, Cindy; two sons, Randy and Mark Brabant of Apple Valley; several grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Warren graduated from La Crosse Logan High School in 1953 and was once employed by Wiggert Bros. before moving to Minnesota to work for Thermo King in Minneapolis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Joan; three brothers, John, James and Ronald Brabant; and his first wife, Donna.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church in Apple Valley. White Funeral Home, 14560 Pennock Ave., Apple Valley, MN 55124, is in charge of arrangements.
Edward J. Colbert
ESCANABA, Mich./LA CROSSE — Edward J. Colbert, 46, of Escanaba and formerly of La Crosse died on Monday, April 14, 2008, in Escanaba.
Ed was born in Beaver Dam, Wis., on Sept. 27, 1961, to Julian and Lois (Graf) Colbert and was a 1979 graduate of Central High School. He worked for many years roofing and siding homes in the La Crosse area and also in Escanaba, where he had lived for the past 10 years. When was younger, Ed loved playing slow-pitch softball and also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his father, Julian Colbert, of Holmen, Wis.; two sisters, Julie (Steve) Churchill of Onalaska, Wis., and Carrie Colbert of St. Paul; two brothers, Ray (Sue) Colbert of Onalaska and Mike (Colleen) Colbert of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; nieces and nephews, Nicholas and Delaney Colbert, Stephanie, Nathan, and Jordan Churchill, Shayna Colbert, and Aubrey and Cal Colbert; many aunts, uncles and cousins; his fianceé, Linda Bougie, of Escanaba; and Linda’s mother, Aggie Bougie, also of Escanaba.
Ed was preceded in death by his mother, Lois; maternal grandparents, Ray and Beatrice Graf; paternal grandparents, Richard Colbert and Pauline Sutton; an infant brother, Patrick; and a nephew, Nicholaus Colbert.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 19, at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse. The Rev. Lawrence B. Berger will officiate. Burial will take place in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Hokah, Minn. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 1 p.m. until time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

Ronald ‘Ron’ H. Glaunert
Ronald “Ron” H. Glaunert, 76, of La Crosse died of cancer on Monday, April 14, 2008, at his home with his family at his side.
He was born May 2, 1931, in Minneapolis to Henry and Mabel (Lhotka) Glaunert. Ron attended Winona Senior High School, Winona, Minn. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. On June 16, 1956, he married Sharon H. Boyce at Central Methodist Church in Winona. He attended the Milwaukee School of Engineering and was employed as a lab technician at Trane Co. for 36 years, retiring in 1994.
Ron and Sharon have been longtime menbers of Wesley United Methodist Church, where Ron was a lay leader for 25 years and a mentor for confirmation youths for 14 years. As a certified lay speaker, he served at numerous local churches. He taught Sunday school, youth leaders for a number of years and also served on a variety of church committees. Ron was a member of the Masonic Fraternity, serving on both the local and state level. He most recently held the position of State District Deputy Grand Master and Grand Lecturer. He also was a member of the Scottish Rite, York Rite, Frontier Badger No. 45, Grand Lodge of Wisconsin, and the Shrine International Fraternity. Ron volunteered for 10 years as the blood site coordinator for the Scenic Bluff Chapter of the American Red Cross. Ron loved life and treasured his family and friends. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, culinary arts and watching sports, especially those involving his family.
Ron is survived by his wife of nearly 52 years, Sharon; and their children, son, Kevin (Neva) Glaunert of Onalaska, Wis., and their children, Renee and John; son, Craig (Kelly) Glaunert of Oshkosh, Wis., and their children, Crystal, Jesse, Samantha, Nicolette, and their granddaughter, Anabella; son, Curtis (Beth) Glaunert of Sun Prairie, Wis., and their son, Brendt; son, Kendall (Stacey) Glaunert of Holmen, Wis., and their children, Zachary and Nicholas; sister, Collette Ladner of Bay St. Louis, Miss.; brother, Keith (Diana) Glaunert of New Berlin, Wis. and sister-in-law, Sandra (Roger) Erickson of Rochester, Minn. and also by nine nieces and nephews. Ron was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Lamar Ladner.
A celebration of Ron’s life will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 18, at Wesley United Methodist Church, Eighth and King streets, La Crosse. The Rev. Don Iliff will officiate. Military honors will follow the service at the church by the Roy L. Vingers American Legion Post 52 of La Crosse and the United States Air Force Honor Guard. Burial will be in Fountain City Cemetery, Fountain City, Wis. Friends may call at Woodruff-Jandt Funeral Home, 4239 Mormon Coulee Road, La Crosse, on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until time of the services.

Richard ‘Gramps’ E. Howard
ST. PAUL — Richard “Gramps” E. Howard, 83, of St. Paul passed away peacefully on Friday, April 11, 2008.
He was a member of the “Class of ’42” at La Crosse Central High School.
He is survived by his wife, three children, nine grandchildren and a sister.

Joan E. Jolivette
WEST SALEM, Wis. — Joan E. Jolivette, 72, of West Salem died Monday, April 14, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center in La Crosse.
She was born April 12, 1936, in La Crosse to Willmar “Sam” and Maurine (Heather) Huston. Joan graduated from Central High School in La Crosse in 1954. On May 14, 1955, she married John L. Jolivette at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in La Crosse. Joan and her husband lived in Mindoro, Wis., for seven years until 1970 when they moved to West Salem to farm and sell produce in the fruit stand. She enjoyed running the market for many years until her health no longer permitted her to do so. Joan enjoyed antiques, country music, sewing and playing cards in her card club.
Survivors include her husband, John; six children, Carrie (Howard) Niedfeldt of Bangor, Wis., John M. (Peggy) Jolivette of Mindoro, Wis., Julie (Carl) Wood of Ettrick, Wis., Joseph P. Jolivette and Paula Jolivette, both of West Salem, and James (Sharon) Jolivette of Taylor, Wis.; 11 grandchildren, Wendy, Angela, Andrew, Nicholas, Bailey, Jennifer, Rachel, Adam, Benjamin, Ashley and Amber; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Jean Wiggert of La Crosse; six sisters-in-law, Revina (Herb) Marcum, Helen Lehrke, Lillian Hofer, Rosella (Raymond) Reinl, Mary Ekern and Theresa Arntson; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Angelica Jolivette; her parents; and six brothers-in-law, Jennings Jolivette, Theo Jolivette, Clarence Lehrke, Walter Ekern, Edward Hofer and Clayton Wiggert.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at noon Saturday, April 19, at St. Leo The Great Catholic Church, 210 W. Hamlin St., West Salem. Father Bob Hegenbarth will officiate. Kenneth ‘Ken’ E. Michalski
Kenneth “Ken” E. Michalski, 82, of La Crosse died Monday, April 14, 2008, at Hillview Health Care Center, La Crosse.
Ken was born Aug. 26, 1925, in La Crosse to John and Rosina (Anderegg) Michalski. He was a 1943 graduate of Central High School in La Crosse. Ken was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving from 1943 until 1945. Ken attended the La Crosse Teachers College and continued his education at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill., receiving his business education degree in 1951. During that time he served as president of Sigma Phi Epsilon. Ken was employed as an auditor for Standard Oil in La Crosse and later was an auditor for Leath Funiture in La Crosse. In 1960, he moved to Madison, where he continued to work for Leath Furniture for the Midwest region. In August 1963, he married Margaret Frankey in Madison, and they were later divorced.
Ken is survived by his two sons, David Michalski of Avon Lake, Ohio, and Peter Michalski of Madison; four grandchildren, Anna Grace and John Kenneth Michalski and Mandy Elizabeth and James David Michalski; one sister, Joan (Jerome) Johnson of La Crosse; one brother, Donald (Mildred) Michalski of Jackson, Wis.; and also by nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 17, at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 630 West Ave. S., La Crosse. The Rev. Mary Ramsay will officiate. DUBUQUE, Iowa — Sharon K. Mott, 65, of Dubuque died Sunday, April 13, 2008, at home.

Sharon was born Dec. 9, 1942, in La Crosse, the daughter of Allen and Josephine (Kendhammer) White. She graduated from Aquinas High School in La Crosse and attended St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Rochester, Minn. Sharon was married on Aug. 28, 1965, to Douglas Mott at Blessed Sacrament Church in La Crosse and has resided in Dubuque since 1974. She was an active member of Resurrection Parish and its prayer chain. Ceramics and painting were two of Sharon’s favorite pastimes.
She is survived by her children, Julie (John) Ely and Kristina (Ryan) Erhart, both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Michael Mott of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Randal Mott of Dubuque; her former husband, Douglas Mott of Dubuque; her siblings, Beverly Roubik of Minneapolis, Robert (Shirley) White and William (Julie) White, both of La Crosse, Joni (Dave) Skemp of Prairie du Chien, Wis., and Kenneth (Holly) White of Onalaska, Wis.; and seven grandchildren.

Muriel Jean (Burkum) Schantz
WILHOIT, Ariz. — Muriel J. Schantz, 65, of Wilhoit passed away unexpectedly in her home on Wednesday, April 9, 2008. She was born in La Crosse on Aug. 27, 1942, to Harold and Thelma (Helgerson) Burkum.
Muriel was a 1960 graduate of Central High School in La Crosse, where she participated in band, choir and drama club. She married Dennis Schantz on Jan. 14, 1961, in La Crosse. The early years of their marriage were spent in International Falls, Minn., and Oregon, Wis. Muriel experienced health problems, which ultimately resulted in their move to a warmer climate in Arizona. With the support of her loving husband and her deep faith in the Lord, she was able to endure many years of pain and suffering without a shred of self pity. She was a truly remarkable woman who was loved by everyone she met.
Muriel is survived by her husband, Dennis of Wilhoit; their two sons, Jeff (Jeanine) Schantz of Rose Hill, Kan., and Eric (Chris) Schantz of Longmont, Colo.; five granddaughters, Jamie, Corinn, Cassie and JoEllen Schantz of Rose Hill, and Erin Schantz of Longmont; three sisters, Helen (Dave) Rach of La Crosse, Connie Adam of Viroqua, Wis., and Karen Gudmundson of Onalaska, Wis.; one brother, Larry (Micky) Burkum of De Soto, Wis.; two aunts, Lauretta Reschke of Chaseburg, Wis., and Catherine Helgerson of Escanaba, Ore.; two sisters-in-law, Dorothea (Harry) Schrock of Shipshewana, Ind., and Sylvia (Wendell) Gregory of Warsaw, Ind.; two brothers-in-law, Chris Schantz of Prescott, Ariz., and Merle (Carolyn) Schantz of Lebanon, Pa.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Muriel was preceded in death by her parents; her mother-in-law, Susan Schantz and father-in-law, Irwin Schantz; maternal grandmother, Christina Helgerson; her maternal stepgrandmother, Edna Helgerson, and maternal grandfather, Theodore Helgerson; and her paternal grandparents, Christina and Helmer Burkum.
A memorial service to celebrate Muriel’s life will be at 4 p.m. Friday, April 18, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 612 Division St., La Crosse.
She will be sadly missed by family and friends.
Gerald ‘Jerry’ N. Schoen
MOUNT PROSPECT, Ill. — Gerald “Jerry” N. Schoen, 76, of Mount Prospect passed away Sunday, April 13, 2008.
He was born July 23, 1931, in La Crosse. Jerry was a U.S. Navy Korean War veteran.
He was the dear husband of Diana Schoen; beloved father of Stephen (Coleen) Schoen of Spring Creek, Nev., David (Renne) Schoen of Oronifo, Idaho, and Chris (Jim) Clingingsmith of McHenry, Ill.; cherished grandfather of Jeremy, Kyle, Eric, Malik, Katie, Jimmy and Brittany; and fond brother of Francis Schoen, Rich Schoen, Walter Schoen, Russell Schoen, Greg Schoen and Barb Barum.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lillian Schoen; a brother, Larry; and his sisters, Dorothy, Marilyn, Catherine and Elizabeth.
A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Cecilia Church, Golf Road (Route 58) and Meier Road, Mount Prospect. Burial will be in St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery. Aurel ‘Wally’ Waldera
ARCADIA, Wis. — Aurel “Wally” Waldera, 85, of Arcadia died Sunday, April 13, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Nursing Home in Arcadia.
He was born May 23, 1922, in North Creek, rural Arcadia, to Steven and Frances (Suchla) Waldera. In 1954, Wally married Lucille Andraska of Edgar, Wis.
Wally was a true hero in a generation of heroes who served in World War II. Enlisting in Arcadia, trained in Louisiana, Wally and the 32nd Military Police staged in Australia in the early years of the war. When there were great fears of the advancing Japanese forces approaching south and into Australia, Wally fought courageously in one of the most brutal and vicious battles of the entire Pacific Theater during the Buna campaign.
He was a proud member of the VFW and American Legion. Wally retired from the Inland Container Corp., where he had worked for 39 years as a shop steward and 1st Line manager, first in Milwaukee, then Ashtabula and, finely, Hazelton, Pa. He enjoyed hunting, golfing, woodworking and traveling.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille of Arcadia; one daughter, Lynne (Tom Coleman) Waldera of Pleasanton, Calif.; one son, Patrick of Dolan Springs, Ariz.; one grandson, Jeff; and one sister, Mayola Singer of Milwaukee.
Preceding Wally in death were his parents; two brothers, Clifford and Tommy; one half-brother, Allen; and one sister, Griff.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 18, at Holy Family Parish, with Father Michael Klos officiating. Burial with military rites will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Arcadia. COLUMBUS HEIGHTS, Minn. — Paul G. Weist, 85, of Columbia Heights passed away Monday, April 14, 2008.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
He will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 58 years, Betty; children, Larry (Barbara), Cathy (Greg) Mathson, Paul (Sherry) and David (Tammy); grandchildren, Lisa, Beth (Anthony) Pogreba, Justin, Grant, Laura, Alyssa, Benjamin, Paul Michael and Jennifer; and nieces, nephews, other family and friends. He was preceded in death by a brother, Walter.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Miller-Heights Chapel, 831 40th Ave. NE, Columbia Heights. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, April 18, at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 3901 First Ave. S., Minneapolis, with visitation one hour prior at the church.
