Gordon J. Granger
KENDALL, Wis. — Gordon J. Granger, 68, of Kendall died Sunday, April 13, 2008, at St. Joseph’s Memorial Hospital, Hillsboro, Wis. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church, South Ridge, Wis. Relatives and friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the church. Smith-Nelson Funeral Home, Kendall, is assisting the family.

MINNEAPOLIS/LA CROSSE — Mariam Coury, 56, died Wednesday, April 16, 2008, in Minneapolis. A full obituary will be provided by Dickinson Family Funeral Home, La Crosse.

STODDARD, Wis. — Eugene G. Schmitt, 76, of Stoddard died on Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Stoddard United Methodist Church. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home, La Crosse, and 10 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the church. A complete obituary will be announced by the funeral home.

TOMAH, Wis. — The Rev. David McCallum, 83, of Tomah passed away on Monday, April 14, 2008, at Tomah Memorial Hospital. Services are pending and Torkelson Funeral Home of Tomah is assisting the family with arrangements.

Earl E. Schultz

TOMAH, Wis. — Earl E. Schultz 79, of Tomah died Tuesday, April 15, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse.

He was born Dec. 16, 1928, to Robert and Vera (Kuehl) Schultz in Tomah. He was united in marriage to Alta Zielsdorf Oct. 15, 1960, in Augusta, Wis. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church. He attended St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Elementary School and graduated from Tomah High School. He worked at Union Camp in Tomah as an estimator until his retirement. Earl farmed on many farms in the Tomah area. He was an avid horse lover and a member of the Tomah Saddle Club. He was a faithful member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church. Earl was a proud uncle and enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is survived by a sister, Betty (Norman) Martin of Tomah; two sisters-in-law, Lucille Schultz of De Forest, Wis., and Joanne (George) Robison of Iowa; his nieces and nephews, Nancy (Tom) Bowers, of Poynette, Wis., Larry (Sue) Schultz of De Forest, Ron (Debbie) Schultz of Lodi, Wis., Judy (Bill) Hippe of Rio, Wis., Curt (Jenny) Schultz of Portage, Wis., Wendy (Mark) Buchanan of Poynette, Christine (Kevin) Mueller of De Forest, Dale (Barbara) Martin, Scott Martin, Rebecca (Darrel) Kirschner and Kathy (Jim) Gabower, all of Tomah, Cindy Schultz of Des Moines, Iowa, Jon (Krista) Schultz of Adel, Iowa, and Dianne Martin of Tomah; many great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; special friends, Dani, Colt and Gage Sullivan; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alta; two brothers, Robert and Galen; and two nephews, Dennis Martin and David Schultz.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 18, at 2:30 p.m. at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 525 Superior Ave., Tomah. Pastor Curt Backhaus will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Tomah.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday at the church from 1:30 p.m. until the time of the service.

Harry Banta

VIROQUA, Wis. — Harry Banta, 86, of Viroqua passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 2008, at Vernon Manor in Viroqua.

He was born on July 31, 1921, in Soldiers Grove, Wis., to James and Aleda (Anderson) Banta. He attended school in Soldiers Grove and graduated from high school there in 1940. During World War II he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in June 1942. He served until October 1945, participating in action in the South Pacific, including Iwo Jima.

Following the war, he married Elaine Mageland on Feb. 3, 1946, in Decorah, Iowa. He attended Luther College, Decorah, for two years, and in 1949, he and Elaine began employment in Muscatine County, Iowa, at the county health care facility, where they remained as co-administrators for 26 years. In 1973, they were employed by Allamakee County in Waukon, Iowa, in the same position where they remained until they retired in 1985. In 1993, they moved to Viroqua.

Harry was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Soldiers Grove, where he was baptized and confirmed. He also belonged to the William A. Schoville Post 220 of the American Legion in Soldiers Grove. He enjoyed boating and fishing on the Mississippi River for many years and was an active member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla in Muscatine. He was an avid sports fan, following the Big Ten and the Packers.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine of Viroqua; his brother, James (Sandra) of Sacramento, Calif.; his nephews, David Banta of Morton Grove, Ill., and James Banta III of Folsom, Calif.; his nieces, Diane Banta of Chicago Heights, Ill., and Nancy Ferrari of Folsom; and his sister-in-law, Elsa Banta of Viroqua.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lewis and Leonard; and one nephew, Leonard Banta.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, April 19, at 1 p.m. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Soldiers Grove. The Rev. Pam Lojewski will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Soldiers Grove. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 11 a.m. until time of services. Sime Funeral Home of Readstown is assisting the family. Memorials may be given to the Vernon Memorial Hospice House or Our Saviors Lutheran Church.

Military rites will be provided by the William A Schoville Post 220 of the American Legion in Soldiers Grove.

Lawrence A. Aspenson

Lawrence “Larry” A. Aspenson, 83, of La Crosse went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, April 15, 2008.

He was born on Feb. 19, 1925, at Seneca, Wis., to Abel and Helga (Lindeland) Aspenson. He served in the U.S. Merchant Marines during World War II. On June 11, 1949, he married Marilyn Turmo in La Crosse. In 1956, he started La Crosse Acoustical Tile and operated the business until his retirement to Phoenix in 1980. He held a patent on a tile cutting machine and designed a tile border saw. Lawrence enjoyed golfing and had six holes-in-one.

In addition to Marilyn, his loving wife of 58 years, he is survived by a son, Dan (Sue) Aspenson of La Crosse; two daughters, Nancy Zielke of La Crosse and Susie (Kelvin) Avery-Reese of Orlando, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Mark and Scott Aspenson, Aaron and Adam Zielke, Joseph, Jeremy and Jonathan Volden, and Jack and Molly Badzinski; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Agnes Withee of Brodhead, Wis., and Elaine Davis of DeKalb, Ill.; and many other dear relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, nine brothers and sisters, and a son-in-law, Howard Zielke.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 21, at Bethany Evangelical Free Church in La Crosse. Pastor Corey Sateren will officiate. Burial will be in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park, La Crosse. Friends may call Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m., and at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.

Elsie Bailey, 86, of La Crosse died Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Wesley United Methodist Church, La Crosse. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, La Valle, Wis. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the church. Woodruff-Jandt Funeral Home, La Crosse, is in charge of the arrangements. A complete obituary will follow.
