Opportunity to hear survivor

.
As a Holocaust educator at Viterbo University, I am pleased to announce that the D.B. Reinhart Institute for Ethics in Leadership at Viterbo is bringing another survivor to the Viterbo Fine Arts Center to speak to our community free of charge at 7 p.m. Monday, April 21.

Author and Holocaust survivor Inge Auerbacher from New York City will be with us in conjunction with the second annual Holocaust Educators’ Workshop at Viterbo for state-wide Holocaust educators on April 22. Inge spent three years between 7 and 10 years of age in the Terezin (Theresienstadt) concentration camp in Czechoslovakia, where out of 15,000 children, fewer than 100 survived.
Terezin, the “model ghetto” was the site of a Red Cross inspection visit in 1944. Elaborate preparations were made for the inspection and for the propaganda film that was made soon afterward resulting in Terezin taking on the look of a country resort.

To this day, it is not clear whether the Red Cross inspectors were taken in by the ruse or reported positively on what they saw because there was little else they could do. Holocaust survivors are leaving us at an alarming rate. Soon, the world will be left to rely on memoirs and videos to learn the lessons of the Holocaust.

To meet Holocaust survivors in person is to touch history. It is difficult to describe the feeling of awe a person experiences when hearing history from one who lived it. Please do not miss this positively awesome event.
