Published - Wednesday, May 07, 2008 City employee considers run for top city office A La Crosse city worker has become the first in what appears might be a long line of candidates to take out papers for a 2009 mayoral bid. Gary Padesky works third shift in the city's Public Works Department. The city clerk's office typically doesn't compile election packets until October, but did so because of early interest in the top post, said Deputy City Clerk Nikki Elsen. At least one other potential candidate has requested information from the city clerk's office. Padesky will challenge incumbent Mayor Mark Johnsrud, who hasn't taken out papers but told the Tribune in December he plans to seek re-election. Johnsrud faced 13 others in the 2005 primary before facing off against Deke Swanson in the general election to become the city's 40th mayor.
