Minutes in Motion gets the community moving

More City Brewery workers engaged in physical activity this spring as part of Gundersen Lutheran’s second annual Minutes in Motion community challenge.

Twenty-three City Brewery employees have been walking and riding their bicycles during the six-week activity challenge that ended Sunday. They were among 3,025 people and 108 businesses participating in the La Crosse area.

Becky Cyphers, City Brewery human resources specialist, said the brewery offered incentives such as a hat, T-shirt or set of glasses from the gift shop.

“We do have a few people who started walking together on their lunch break, and one guy started riding his bike to work every day,” Cyphers said.

At the three-week midpoint, every employee had at least 640 minutes of physical activity, and one recorded 1,199 minutes, she said. The goal for the six weeks was 1,260 minutes a person, or

30 minutes of physical activity a day.

“I like that we got people on their feet moving, and we hope to offer other programs here,” Cyphers said.

Gundersen Lutheran had 827 employees in the challenge. The next highest were Northern Engraving with 147 employees, W.A. Roosevelt with 109, Logistics Health with 73, La Crosse Tribune with 57, Winona High School with 50 and Westby School District with 42.

Minutes in Motion will sponsor a celebration to conclude the challenge at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in Riverside Park. The event will have cash and merchandise drawings.

“We didn’t reach our goal of 5,000 people, but hopefully we encouraged people who were not physically active to do something, and those already active to bump it up a little,” said Linda Larson, Gundersen Lutheran clinical exercise physiologist and wellness specialist who coordinated the challenge.
