Vicki Lynn Nedland-Schaffer
WESTBY, Wis. — Vicki Lynn Nedland-Schaffer, 57, passed away peacefully May 10, 2008, at her home in Westby.
Vicki was born Aug. 17, 1950, and was a lifetime resident of her favorite place, Westby. Graduating from Westby High School in 1968, she then went on to college at UW-L and earned a degree in social work. She joined WTC (formerly Western Wisconsin Technical College) and worked for many years as a teacher and counselor doing something she loved to do — giving guidance to and helping people change their lives. She also worked at many other area businesses, including the Viroqua Tire Shop, the Ho Chunk Tribe, Habitat for Humanity and Badger Corrugating. For the past six years she found joy in her contribution to Myrick Hixon EcoPark (formerly Hixon Forest Nature Center) where she was office manager.
Vicki felt she “finally got it right” on Aug. 17, 1991, when she married Edward Roy Schaffer, her soul mate, her best friend and the love of her life. She was an amazing wife, mother and best friend to Heather and grandmother to Baylee Rae. She leaves special memories with Baylee that she will never forget. She also loved her Saturday adventures with her niece Ashley. Vicki dedicated her life to her family; it was her pride and joy.
Vicki was a unique and exuberant individual, who lived larger than life, making an impression wherever she went! She had an amazing ability to make everyone around her feel special and welcome. She brought a smile to everyone’s face, young and old. The children who visited the Nature Center forgot their shyness as they sat on Vicki’s knee to share their secrets. She was passionate about the International Westby Ski Tournament as well as the Green Bay Packers but never lost her loyalty to her second favorite team, the Oakland Raiders. Vicki will always be remembered as a rare and precious stone whose favorite quote was “Diamonds, darling, diamonds!” She will be missed by everyone but never forgotten!
Vicki was preceded in death by her father, Everett (1984); and her mother, Virginia (2006). Left to mourn her passing are her husband, Ed; daughter, Heather; and granddaughter, Baylee Rae; as well as her brother, Kevin; his daughter, Ashley; her stepfather, “Pete” Peterson; a few close cousins and her best friend of 25 years Deb Andersen. She will be remembered forever by her close friends, Sherry, Rita, Carol, Diana, Nanjean, Patsy, Kathy, Kent and Matt, as well as her Hixon Forest Nature Center friends, Brenda and Stephanie.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 5 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, at the Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home, Viroqua, Wis., with a prayer service held at 7:45 p.m. led by Pastor Steven Fossum. The visitation will continue on Wednesday, May 14, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Viroqua from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. Officiating at the service will be Pastor Kathy Ingbritsen. Burial will take place at Bethel Cemetery, rural Viroqua at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Ed Schaffer for the Schaffer Family in care of Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home, 856 South Rusk, Viroqua, WI 54665.
