Three Onalaska High School seniors — Russell Buehler, Abby Chilsen and Madeline Senger — were among the finalists in the 53rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
Buehler plans to attend Carleton College in Northfield, Minn. Chilsen will attend the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire as a pre-med student, and Senger will study at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.
Two Central seniors, Katherine Peck and Michael Sartin-Tarm, and two Logan seniors, Jensyn Gillies and Zach Stewart, also were named finalists.
Peck, Sartin-Tarm and Gillies plan to attend UW-Madison. Peck is majoring in vocal performance, and Sartin-Tarm is considering engineering. Gillies plans to study biology and genetics. Stewart will attend Carleton College.
Holmen High School senior Ravi Shah, Ellen Gustafson of Houston, Minn., High School and Hannah Chakoian, a home-schooled student from Viroqua, Wis., also were National Merit finalists.
Shah will study mechanical engineering at Penn State University. Gustafson plans to attend Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, and Chakoian will attend Macalester College in St. Paul and has an interest in international studies.
The 10 students were among fewer than 1 percent of high school seniors in the country who received the semifinalist designation last fall.
About 90 percent of the semifinalists were named National Merit finalists in April.
