Perhaps the most famous sculpture — the Spoonbridge and Cherry — is the gardn’s centerpiece and has become an iconic symbol of Minneapolis.
The garden is a partnership between the Walker Art Center and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Department.
The area where the Sculpture Garden now sits was once a swamp. The city took control of it in 1893 and built a large armory there, but it was demolished because of decay.
Some of the 40 sculptures placed in the garden were commissioned and others were purchased from galleries and collectors.
About 6.5 million people have visited the Sculpture Garden in the past two decades.
