Johnson to challenge Kapanke for state Senate seat

.
WEST SALEM, Wis. — Democrat Tara Johnson formally launched her campaign today to unseat state Sen. Dan Kapanke, R-La Crosse, in the 32nd District.

“We need a state senator who has a proven track record of passing balanced budgets and wisely investing taxpayers’ money,” said Johnson, a La Crosse County supervisor from the town of Shelby. “We need a state senator who understands the issues affecting our community and will work to find innovative solutions to the problems we face.”
Johnson called her race against Kapanke “tough, but very winnable.” She said she intends to spend the campaign talking to residents of the 32nd District to “hear what matters most to them.”

“Their values will be the values that I vote for on the floor of the state Senate,” said Johnson. “This is our campaign for change, and the contrast could not be more clear. Ours is a campaign of working hard, of innovation, collaboration and solving problems. Theirs is a legacy of status-quo, delays, partisanship, and inaction. Ours is a campaign of getting things done.”

Asked whether she was referring specifically to Kapanke, Johnson said, “As much as he’s been an elected official ... he’s part of the folks who are in Madison now not getting things done.”

“I agree with her,” Kapanke said Monday. “That’s why since I was elected in 2004 I’ve been working with the other side on issues that are important to the people of western Wisconsin.”

Kapanke cited his work with state Rep. Jennifer Shilling, D-La Crosse, on access to dental care for Medicaid recipients, noting that Johnson also has worked with them on the issue.

Johnson has served on the La Crosse County Board for eight years, and has chaired the county’s Health & Human Services Board until recently. Johnson made her announcement at the Lakeview Business Park, a cooperative venture between La Crosse County and the village of West Salem, where 200 new jobs have been created.

At the announcement, Shilling introduced Johnson and called her a “community problem-solver ... who likes to get things done.”

The 32nd state Senate District includes all of La Crosse, Vernon and Crawford counties, and parts of Monroe and Richland counties.

Kapanke, who lives in the town of Campbell and is co-owner of the La Crosse Loggers baseball team, was elected in 2004, and has already announced his re-election plans.

Johnson and her husband, Tim Padesky, own TD Padesky Electric Inc., an electrical contracting company in La Crosse. They have two children, Nicholas and Layna.

Johnson was executive director of the La Crosse Area United Way from 1993 until 2000, when she left United Way to raise her family. She also was elected to the La Crosse County Board in 2000, and has risen to be vice chair of the board.

The 32nd District race has been “targeted” by the State Senate Democratic Committee, but Johnson said she does not know how much financial support she will get from the party.

In 2004, Kapanke spent $325,000 on the race and received 52.5 percent of the vote, compared to $160,000 spent by Democrat Brad Pfaff, according to the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign.

" notme- You might as well clarify her vote on Domestic partner Health insurance. She voted to offer health coverage to live-in-heterosexual pals. On virtue of a checkbook from the corner bank, and a hokey affidavit. Rather than asking for all titled and deeded property to be owned jointly to reflect their love nests. More recently she has had her shoulder behind a move to offer Count employees post retirement 55-65 health funds/coverage. Starting with 'B' class employees, matching the City and Schools, and then they will work undoubtadly through all the County ranks. For more benefits that private workers will never see in their working lives. "

" Tara Johnson was recruited to the Progressive Majority Farm Team in the fall of 2007 as a potential candidate for the State Senate in 2008.

Here are some quotes from their () web site: "we do intend to transform America", "We are identifying, training, and supporting candidates."

Recruited by whom? Does this organization (PAC) actually represent us, the voters, here in La Crosse? It turns out that the Progressive Majority is a Washington based PAC, talk about your outside money

Candidates generally disavow any significant entanglement or identification with the organization, citing the "plausible deniability" of 527-like tax-exempt advocacy groups and PACs.

Looks to me like Tara Johnson-Padesky has been bought and paid for, and my grandma had a word for people who where bought and paid for "

" Kudos to the two Steves and their lock-step friends like Tara. Her voting record will reflect same. These people are Democrats, and they vote as they are told and leave little to individual thought or integrity. O'Malley was given a 6% raise while the peons at County received 2%. Then look on and read his employment contract and the benefits and expense he was given is lengthy and considerable. Last year they held up the unfortunate and downtrodden as excuses to borrow an unprecedented loan for roads. The the Tribune has the audacity to coin O'Malley a "genius" for consolidating a program and buildings that were evolving toward that direction quite well by itself? Tara is one of the Democrat Troops Governors like Doyle are salivating for. "

" Although I still do not understand why MY background is SO important, I'll bite.

No sir, I have no conviction on my record more serious than a traffic violation. I have not had an encounter, other than social, with a LEO in well over 10 years. I am a La Crosse county resident, home owner, and property tax payer. I have school age children and am gainfully employed (private secctor).

So given we agree the posts on Johnson's record are accurate, we must also agree Kapanke has been and will be a better representative to the people of La Crosse County. "

" To notme: Your the one not answering questions. Are you a convicted felon or aren't you? In a political campaign Kapanke has to expect questions like the one regarding his wife. People want to know what influence he had regarding his wife's sentencing. She got TWO WEEKS in jail for drug theft and as part of the agreement the drug charge would be dismissed. In addition she kept her license. How in the world did she keep her nursing license after a crime like that? That's all people are asking and your not answering the questions presented to you. You've posted Johnson's record numerous times on another post. We can all look at that and make our decision. Why won't you just be honest? "

just the facts wrote on May 14, 2008 5:56 AM:

" To not me; please go ahead and tout Johnson- Padeskys accomplishements. I see her as a Doyle stooge and a liberal big spender. Anything she was part of, involves big money! Also answer the question posed in an earlier post; How much work did her husbands electrical company do for the county while she served? As far as Kapankes wife; that issue will be brought up very soon, by outsider money so Johnson can deny any knowledge of it! "

notme wrote on May 14, 2008 12:15 AM:

" I post Johnson's record, but instead of answering my challenge Mr. Cranium wants to switch the context of the thread to take the attention away from Johnson's record, curious.

This is a typical blog tactic used by those who realize they are either on the wrong side of an issue or they have a subordinate position. Either way Mr. Cranium, I accept your acknowledgment that my posts concerning Johnson's record are accurate. "

dmm wrote on May 13, 2008 10:21 PM:

" Prepare for a VERY negative and personal race because that is the only way Tara Johnson even finishes within 20% of Kapanke. Even with all the targeted State money, I expect Kapanke to win this one by at least 10 points. Kapanke is and will continue to be out in the community listening to everyday people. The issues he takes up are not a laundry list devised by party leaders like some other area politicians, but areas where he thinks he can make a difference for constituents. Sometimes he is in step with his party. Other times he is not. Speak with him once. Ask him tough but fair questions and you will get straight, honest answers. "

" The board changed how the salaries were calculated. Instead of paying different amounts to each board member based upon their committees, they simply paid them all the same amount. It was a net wash since many board members were actually making MORE than the amount settled upon in the end. Plus, they voted on that before an election, and then ran against it, and she won. The board can't change it's own pay for the same session. http://www.lacrossetribune.com/articles/2005/10/20/news/z0420%20boardpay.txt "

notme wrote on May 13, 2008 5:31 PM:

" I called no one names, simply posted Johnson's record, and look at the attacks.

What her record shows is an elitist "if we want more pay we'll take it" attitude.

What her record shows is a YES vote for the de-criminalization of marijuana.

What her record shows is a YES vote for a larger $300,000/bed jail. 300K per bed, we can build entire houses for less that that.

What her record shows is how "out of touch" she is, when she votes FOR a 6% bureaucracy salary increase while the average citizen is seeing stagnant wages. "

I also didn't say I wanted to have a beer or anything else for that matter with anybody, I pointed out how the man doesn't just sit & eat with his family, he listens to the public. Dan Kapanke is not my buddy as you refer to, he's a man that I support & with pride. If you feel the buddy system is why we're in IRAQ, then I feel sorry for you. "

My comments about Johnson came from the media ordeal on the radio and evening news. I am an individual who works very hard for the preservation for this great society. That includes trying to elect people who uphold our great Constitution. That also includes the election of people who will not tax the general public in order to give it to someone who won't work for it themselves. I am trying to prevent the current slide we are in toward third world nation status. "

None of this is relevant to Dan's campaign, but he Al did get his facts right.

And didn't voting for "the regular guy you'd like to sit down and have a beer with" get us into this Iraq mess? I don't want my buddy in the state senate, I want someone who can get things done, instead of simply doing whatever Mike Huebsch tells them to do. "

You owe Ruth Kapanke an apology for being such A LOW BLOW & an inconsiderate LIAR! GO KAPANKE....You've got MANY supporters & it shows! "

KRKIKA wrote on May 13, 2008 2:32 PM:

" Part 2...Dan Kapanke is a man who CARES about his community & is vocal in both positive & negative ways about himself & his family. Ruth, is the most quiet, compassionate, gentle & polite human being & has overcome a terrible time in her life. Living in severe pain day after day is a very challenging task. Her nursing skills are superb, her care for her patients is serene as is her commitment to herself, family, husband and community. I know of every word typed here because of the opportunity of working with Ruth, being a supporter of Dan's & seeing the love they have for each other. "

When was the last time you saw any other local elected official sitting having a donut & coffee, wholeheartedly listening to us commnunity members on a regular basis. When was the last time you saw any of your favorites living in a modest home like the majority of us, when was the last time you saw any of these people stopped & firmly shaking hands with everyone who's passing them, with a HUGE smile on their face...... "

" From the stories that have come out today, the Republican majority in the Assembly is just going to borrow and put off payments anyway. So, when they are in charge, we still have excess borrowing. Why not have a grassroots candidate who's campaign money came from this district, and represents the people in it instead of a man beholden only to the dollars he took from large corporations outside the district? With Dan in the seat, the Republicans are doing exactly what you are complaining about.

Your constitutional argument doesn't make sense. Unless you can cite an example of Tara behaving unconstitutionally in her role as a County Board member (something I doubt very much you can do), you are simply speculating on what she might do, which isn't worth anyone's time. "

She will however, take an oath to support, protect, and defend CERTAIN PARTS of the constitution ONLY. That alone is reason enough to vote or Kapanke. "

[I am concerned that some of my fellow supervisors believe that they know what is best on this issue.]

I'll paraphrase; supervisors should NOT be the ones making the decision.

[If you know how things get done, if you know how committees and people and processes, work then I believe you are "qualified" to give an opinion on this issue.]

Again, I'll paraphrase, only those who know HOW the county board works, i.e. supervisors, are qualified to give an opinion.

In one statement, she wants the people to have a voice, and in the other, she says the people aren't qualified.

Net result, the county board got BIGGER costing the taxpayers even MORE in TAXES. "
